Meta Meta Monday 12/10/2018: Featuring Updated Post Flairs
Hey WWW,
This guide is here to explain the usage of the mandatory flair tagging system for all posts.
Going forward, any and all posts will need to be flaired. No exceptions.
First things first though. How do you flair a post?
It's quite simple.
Simply click the topic you have posted and the option to flair it will be available. Click the flair option and a drop down menu will be presented to you.
This is how to do so on the PC.
Step 1. Click the Flair Option.
Step 2. Choose from the Drop Down Menu.
Battle
This is the standard X vs Y flair. We decided to combine Casual and Serious because we already make a point to discourage and remove low-effort/joke responses. This flair doesn't have any special rules accompanying it, abide by our comment rules and discuss the matchup that the OP posted.
Challenge
This flair is for non-standard battle posts like "Can Character X take over the United States". Posts that use this flair are not straightforward battles, they involve a character or group of characters trying to accomplish something. This flair doesn't have any special rules accompanying it, follow our rules and discuss the prompt.
Scan-Battle
We decided to make this an actual flair instead of just having the OP include it in the title. A full description of Scan-Battle rules can be found here. To summarize, any claim you make must be backed by evidence supporting the claim. This doesn't mean paraphrasing a quote that you think you remember or saying that you remember seeing a scan, it means going and finding the actual quote/evidence that supports your claim.
Getting rid of the Writing Prompt Flair
The mods are sad to see this one go, but it is apparent to us that the vast majority of WWW users are not interested in this type of post. We end up having to remove 99% of comments on a Writing Prompt post because they do not follow the rules of the flair.
Us getting rid of the flair doesn't mean we are discouraging long and detailed responses, on the contrary, we would love to see more of that sort of response. If you see a post and want to write a story about it, feel free! Some of our top comments of all time have been those sort of responses on regular posts.
Meta, Featured and Event
We are keeping Meta and splitting Special into two tags, Event, and Featured.
The Featured tag is for all our Featured Character and Team posts. The Event tag is for Tourneys. We are making it so only mods can assign Featured and Event to a post. If you want to submit a featured post or tourney(either a new one or submitting the latest installment in an ongoing Tourney) you must message the mods so we can assign this flair to your post. Please message us prior to submitting your post as you will not be able to assign the correct flair and our Auto-Mod will remove the post after 5 minutes because it does not have a flair. This may be inconvenient, but we decided it is necessary because some users don't read the flair guidelines and think their post is "Special".
That's all the changes we have for you today, let us know what you think! Compliments are appreciated, criticisms will be heard and taken seriously as well. We have fallen off the wagon when it comes to Meta-Monday so this also counts as us getting back into the swing of things. Feel free to discuss flairs or any other Meta things in the comments.

RIP Writing Prompt
Well at least we got Character Scramble for that.

Sad to see writing prompts go, I've had a lot of fun reading and creating replies to them.

Will this mess with posts that came before? Will I have to re-flair stuff or will it automatically fix itself?
6
u/xavion Dec 10 '18
Yeah, flairs on all prior posts are invisible if you're using CSS. This removes the old flair images, so while they are still flaired there is no image associated with them which makes them appear to have no flair while using CSS.

Would something like "Can Sherlock Holmes stop Light Yagami?" be a Battle or a Challenge?
5
u/HighSlayerRalton Dec 10 '18
Unless it's in battle for some reason, it'd be a Challenge. A test of detective vs serial killer definitely isn't a typical fight.

That's not my understanding of the new flairs. It sounds like Battle is for any fight or competition between two (or more) characters or groups, and Challenge is for a character/group trying to accomplish a goal. The example I gave kind of fits both. (Though the mods can correct me if I'm wrong.)

Our goal is for Battle to be a straightforward physical fight. Your prompt sounds less like that and more like a challenge, especially given how the title is worded.
If you think our wording doesn't make that clear, we are 100% open to suggestions on how to change that, would just adding "physical fight" to our Battle flair description be enough?Kiwi sums it up perfectly, my comment was an unnecessary limitation on the flair.

Yeah, it's unclear to me. What about "X vs. Y in a game of dodgeball"?
5
u/KiwiArms Dec 12 '18
A good rule of thumb is any sort of direct confrontation between two or more combatants is a Battle. Dodgeball is a direct, physical competition, so it's a Battle, as would be, say, "Who would win a chess match, X or Y?". Anything that isn't a Battle that's still a valid post would be Challenge.

Seems like there would be a lot of gray area. The descriptions could definitely use some clarifying.

u/LambentEnigma Dec 10 '18
It seems like the rule about mods having to assign Featured and Event flairs would lead to a lot of posts being removed if the mods aren't active in that five-minute period.

Features are all scheduled by mods anyway. If someone planning a Tourney hasn't put enough thought into the planning that they can coordinate with the mods about it then they shouldn't be running a Tourney at all.

Features are all scheduled by mods anyway.
In my experience, the mods haven't been great about this. There have been times when they have neglected to contact me about my upcoming featured character/team, and they seem lax about exactly when I post them. Also, it often takes a day or so for the featured post to be put up on the sidebar, so I'm not at all confident that the mods can consistently flair a post within five minutes.

Message us, or ping me on discord I guess? Others should work too, but just speaking for me here, even if I show up as online my phone will notify me if someone PMs or pings me, and if I’m not asleep I could normally come flair the post promptly.
I mostly just do tech stuff though, so don’t handle the features or sidebar so can’t speak there, can flair featured characters and teams for you to stop them being deleted though I guess?

Hey I've gotten way better at that

u/HighSlayerRalton Dec 10 '18
That's not really a problem with the Feature flair itself.
4
u/LambentEnigma Dec 10 '18
I didn't say it was. I'm just saying we should be able to set the Featured flair ourselves, as we could before.

THANK YOU. NOW we have a place for nonstandard fights. And the Writing Prompt flair was so underused.

Sucks to see writing prompts die, but we do have the challenge flair, which is something I've always wanted for this sub.
Great changes as per usual guys.

If a post includes both a standard X vs Y fight and a non-standard battle, what should the flair be?
Example: Iron Man vs Lex Luthor:
Round 1: In-character
Round 2: Bloodlusted
Round 3: At a game of chess
Round 4: Who can build the better robot?
