Discussion The Departed (2006) ending question *SPOILERS* Spoiler

When Costigan (DiCaprio) sees the "CITIZENS" envelope on Sullivan's (Damon) desk at the police station and figures out Sullivan is the rat, Costigan leaves the station. Why? Why not instead gather several cops to confront Sullivan about the envelope? He just leaves the station! And then he tells Sullivan to meet him on the roof of the abandoned building. What?? Why?? What a bizarre choice of action. It seems so irrational. Why did Costigan choose to confront Sullivan in secret away from everyone else instead of just pinning Sullivan righ there at the station surrounded by all the detectives and cops??

Review Jim Carrey's The Majestic (2001) - I was surprised by just how awful this sickly sweet movie is despite loving it as a kid

I love Jim Carrey. I love classic Hollywood. I find the McCarthy trials and the red scare really interesting. So this should have a been a blast of a rewatch. But it feels like director Frank Darabont, known more for intense hard hitting films, was trying too hard to move away from his formula by making such a sickly sweet movie.

It's about a screenwriter in 1950s Hollywood who gets blacklisted after attending a communist meeting. He then crashes his car. Suffers amnesia. Then finds himself in a dinky Californian town where he's mistaken for a cinema owner's son who died in the First World War.

It's just to so mawkish and dripping with sentimentality. Most of the writing really is cliche. I'd accuse it of being Oscar baity but I feel the subject matter is too light for that.

When Carrey is ejected from Hollywood, he spends a whole evening talking to a model of monkey rather than even trying to contact his girlfriend. Either those scenes were cut for pacing or they just wanted goofy scenes with Carrey. I imagine it was the latter.

Then when he's in the town, it becomes so kitschy. The romantic scenes with, the admittedly smoking hot, Laurie Holden feel very derivative where she all of a sudden gets the hiccups, leading up to their kiss on the top of a lighthouse. And the whole town following the two of them as they're walking away from a diner - just very silly.

Martin Landau is the one bright spark. Fantastic actor. So much emotion in those eyes.

The bad guy is very cliche. He's a government man hunting down Carrey and swats a fly as he's speaking about him. So on the nose.

The film starts to feel quite preachy as well. There's a black guy inexplicably living beneath The Majestic, a closed down theatre. He has a ponderously long monologue about being a war hero. And the audience is clearly meant to reflect on how wonderful the main characters are for allowing this black veteran live there in a time of heightened racism.

Real shame as I loved this movie when I was a child.

Question Is this iPad worth it in 2025?

Post image
15 Upvotes

So I want to use this iPad Pro as my primary iPad.

So I am getting this for 20k inr or 230 USD

It's 256gb Cellular iPad in good condition and high quality replaced battery; so should I get it?

And BTW if I don't like it I can return this back(no questions asked)and I can get a full refund. Will it at least be usable for 3 years from now?

Rn I have an iPad 9th generation and a MacBook Air M1, but I will give my iPad 9 to my cousin and keep this iPad Pro 2017 as primary and will put a Sim in it(for on the go data, I hate Hotspot)

So is it a good buy?

Unanswered What's going on with the "Unboxing Japan" IG account?

Some time ago I randomly subscribed to the Instagram account Unboxing Japan (that also has other social media pages like X and Threads), your typical "wacky Japan" repository of curious facts, strange places, unusual people and so on. I kind of forgot about it, then the other day it popped up again in my feed but with completely different content: the formatting and clip style is mostly the same, but now it only talks about immigrants making ruckus in Japan and asks followers to report any such cases to the authorities. There are a few posts about other Asian immigrants being praised (Nepali, Vietnamese etc.) but strangely all of the other posts are against Indonesians causing chaos and doing illegal activities. I wonder why they had to hijack a channel meant for foreigners to address those hyper-specific complaints, since I doubt these followers like me would ever care about this kind of stuff that doesn't directly affect them. (Also why only Indonesians?)

Promo Sunday Save money at Costco? Use CostLow, an app I made to see all clearance deals at the 650+ US locations.

About a year ago I found 1L Kirkland Olive Oil for $4.97 marked down from $15. I couldn't believe it, I bought four. I also told everyone I knew. It turns out, it was only at one warehouse and the inventory sold out later that day.

I thought there has to be a way to see these clearance deals before stumbling across them in an isle. But there wasn't. So I created it.

I built CostLow. A platform that aggregates and displays every .97 deal for every U.S. warehouse. It's free. No logins or emails. Just a utility to save you money (hopefully).

  • Live Clearance Feeds View community-submitted .97 deals for any U.S. warehouse. Anyone can contribute a deal they see.
    • OCR-Powered Price Tag Scanning: Just scan the price tag. The app uses OCR to automatically parse the item number, description, and price. No manual entry required.
    • Quick Product Photo: Add a photo of the product to complete the submission. The whole process takes seconds.
  • Real-Time Deal Alerts Receive push notifications the moment a new clearance item is submitted for your selected warehouses.
  • Item Watchlists Monitor a full-priced item you're interested in. We'll send an alert the moment it's marked down for clearance.
  • Price Drop Notifications Track an existing clearance item and get notified if its price drops even lower.
  • Nationwide Gas Price Monitor See gas prices for every Costco location on a map at once.
  • Multi-Warehouse Availability Check See if a deal is available at other nearby locations and compare prices.
  • 30-Day Price Adjustment Tracker (coming soon) Log the items you purchase, and the app will notify you if the price drops within 30 days so you can claim the credit from Costco.

S TIFU by telling my colleague how I get better at work

I’m a PM at an agency, a few months ago I was seriously close to quitting. I go home and still have client emails in my head. I’d forget small tasks that turned into big problems. And worse, I started resenting the job. So out of desperation, I test using AI like chatGPT and other tools to make work easier. It reads my todos, emails and tell me what to follow up

Fast forward, it worked. I stop forgetting things, and get more things done on time

I’m happy about the results, so I causally told my colleagues about this and he didn't like it. He said I’m making a bad decision and using AI will hurt me in the long term. Something about attachment and using our own brain

I get some points, but it’s not like I’m having an AI gf, it just I use it to stop work about work

I’m not trying to cut corners. I still do the work. Why does that make people uncomfortable?

TL;DR: My coworker dislikes me because I use AI

We need better debates

I’m getting so fucked off with what passes for AI discourse online. The artists vs AI debate is a total red herring, an irrelevance, and it’s causing an absurd amount of tribalism. Why does everything have to be a culture war?

The AI industry is doing real harm to vast numbers of people, and yet the vast majority of discussion about it centres around image extruders and whether or not ‘clanker’ is a racial slur. When did the world become this dumb?
