The dangling machine really makes this a great hit over a simple collision.

This is the first time I’ve heard of the bridges moving when this happens. That’s new for me.

Do they check for this every time on all these bridges? And then have some machine(s) come and push them back into place? That’s both interesting and concerning: doesn’t that mean the bridge has also had its integrity harmed?

Bridgespan usually aren't bolted down, so that it can expand/shrink with the temperatur.

They generally get engineering inspections, according to many news articles that state that the bridge will be closed until engineering assessment is complete.

I'd be willing to bet that many/most older, short, steel bridges are so poorly engineered (over built, cost more than they needed to) that there's generally not much damage.

Yeah I’ve heard that about train bridges: that in general, they’re very strong.

Usually with bridge collisions they'd have to inspect it afterwards.

6 feet!! Jesus christ.

There was a walking bridge near me that was hit - maybe twice - by vehicles hauling tall loads. In the end, it was so damaged the bridge was probably on the way down already, so they closed that section of highway for like a day or two and took half the bridge down. They replaced it that winter (I believe), but now they’re going to redo it completely to be more accessible, which is nice.

A dump truck at 55+ mph will do things to anything it hits.

I'll be the first to say that 6 inches is a lot!

6 is respectable.

7 is nice.

8 is careful.

All fun.

9 though is simply dangerous and could cause an accident.

I'm assuming when running a train, the train adjusts for conditions of the rail, yes? Don't want the railing to get out of hand.

Yeah that could end up in a bang, which would be a tremendous cock-up.

Going to be a big bill at the end of it, and the transport company will be very unhappy when it is served on them.
