NB Hutchinson Parkway, Westchester County NY

Post image

Bonus points to the driver for trying it : a) with a double trailer, b) on a Parkway (trucks are banned on Parkways by NY state law)

More people potentially using car GPS units that route them incorrectly.

I would hope FedEx has corporate software for their drivers, with more relevant information (like highways where trucks are banned). Or maybe my expectations are too high

A lot of drivers are subcontract and work for contacted haulage companies that do the line haul between depots.

So it is a FedEx Ground truck which means the tractor is an independent.

Still anyone who drives a truck in NY should know that parkways are for cars and Expressways are for trucks.

I get they could be from across the country, but it’s the type of driving I would think a professional would want info about prior to driving there.

Umm that’s not a fed ex driver there bud. lol that’s a 3rd party company or an owner operator pulling a fed ex wagon. I understand people not in the industry don’t understand but a lot of big companies have the trailer and hire guys that have their own trucks/small trucking company to pull their trailers.

I'm just glad this driver is going to get so many fines and penalties that they're going to suffer and regret today for years to come.

Without those it just wouldn't be New York.

As a trucker, I use Google Maps because it's traffic map and expected arrival time is always spot on.

That being said, I already know what route I'm taking and don't follow any of it's suggestions.

I have a backup Trucker's App in case there's a need to find an alternate route.

This guy is just an overall terrible CDL driver. The Hutchinson is an obvious No-No

Truck satnav is expensive, some companies don’t provide it

If you have a commercial licence, it is not worth losing your job because you drove down the wrong road. If you don't know where you are going, local laws or are not able to read a map to plan your trip, truck satnav is worth every penny.

Bosses should really provide it, though it’s not too much of a problem using Waze etc if you pay attention to what you’re doing, low bridges are typically signposted plenty so easy to avoid, same with width and weight restrictions,

Waze knows nothing about height or weight limits. No trucker should use Waze. Problem is that by the time you are getting onto a road with signage it’s often too late to turn back, especially with a 53’ trailer…

In my area the roads typically have signs before the last few turnings, and if it’s a side road where the bridge is it’s typically signposted before you turn in

I saw one on the Hutch last week - too bad I couldn't take a picture.

You know the 9' high bridge on the southbound Hutch, just before the Whitestone bridge? There is a gigantic sign saying 9 feet clearance, all high vehicles must exit now. How can anyone miss it?

The 18-wheeler was on the other side of the bridge, totally destroyed, surrounded by cop cars. It was 11:30 AM on Friday, August 1. Anyone get a picture?

Are you talking about the bridge right after exit 1B? With the train line also going over the bridge?

If so, I have dozens of pictures of the trucks that hit that bridge. I just worked on the bridge reconstruction project there and over the last 8 years it was hit around 60 times. FedEx was the most frequent singular offender

Any trucker not familiar with the area usually follows their gps which frequently puts people on the hutch to save a few minutes from the traffic jam that is 95

Yeah, that one. This was the biggest wreck I have seen, total destruction, with a big piece of the truck by the side of the road.

Yeah we put these big steel box beams in front of and a little lower than the bridge to protect it and those things absolutely shred the tops off trucks. One truck hit it with so much speed it made it all the way sticking out the other side of the bridge while almost completely flipping upside down

Thanks for your contribution. What's the (just a ballpark estimate) bridge repair cost from a truck strike like this?

4

u/hockeyboy026 26d ago

Honestly the trucks sustain more damage than the bridges do. On that bridge I mentioned we actually constructed "protection beams" which are big steel box girders that are meant to take the brunt of these hits. On that bridge the only damage that's been left behind is paint scratches lol

That's so good to know!

Seen this so many times. Riverside drive. Parkways. Never ending

lol that’s right near me. Aaah the good ole Hutch, can openers every 3 miles fully signed and trucks banned. Still happens often.

You mean those flashing "Know Your Height" signs didn't work ????

u/blbd 25d ago

Good show. There are only ♾️ signs warning about this at the beginning of every single Parkway. Now they will install sign ♾️ + 1.

Every time I take the Hutch I worry about some of the pickups with bigger trailers getting wedged in right and proper. Thankfully, I haven't seen a tractor trailer stuck until now. Yikes!

1

u/blbd 25d ago

This one got wedges left and improper. So you were worried about the wrong scenario and that jinxed it. 😉

I always wondered why they did not put a 9’ high horizontal bar (like those in front of parking garages) at the on-ramps. Yes, there are initial costs but over should prove beneficial with less issues/costs like this.

Yes, probably other concerns or issues need to be studied, but signs alone don’t appear to be working.

u/dattara 25d ago

I can see why the authorities haven't done this .. your suggestion makes complete sense & would save hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages to trucks, hence which self-respecting local government would implement this 😛

And that would be why trucks aren’t allowed on the parkways… For those who haven’t been there, it’s very well-marked. There are big, obvious signs all over the place. You really have to have your head wedged to do this, yet it happens pretty often.

The King Street bridge over the Hutch has crushed more trucks than any other. I keep joking with my wife that they should paint teeth around the outside cause if you’re in a truck or towing a container, it’s going to eat you!

2

u/vinyl1earthlink 23d ago

I thought that bridge looked familiar. King Street it is.

The other popular one is James Farm Road, when trucks get off Route 8 by mistake.

1

u/rswwalker 23d ago

This one is further down the Hutch, King Street has a stone wall across the top instead of a fence.

2

u/OkSmoke9195 16d ago

Oh he could have totally made it through the middle

1

u/pizzaforce3 25d ago

There's an old brain teaser:

How to get the truck out from under the bridge without having to disassemble the bridge or further ruin the truck?

Just let the air out of the tires, and the truck height will drop about six inches, enough to free it.

1

u/Warcraft_Fan 16d ago

I know that bridge, it comes up a lot because truck drivers can't read and ignores "low bridge" and "trucks banned" warnings.

That's going to cost FedEx driver a lot, possibly losing his CDL.
