NB Hutchinson Parkway, Westchester County NY
Bonus points to the driver for trying it : a) with a double trailer, b) on a Parkway (trucks are banned on Parkways by NY state law)

I saw one on the Hutch last week - too bad I couldn't take a picture.
You know the 9' high bridge on the southbound Hutch, just before the Whitestone bridge? There is a gigantic sign saying 9 feet clearance, all high vehicles must exit now. How can anyone miss it?
The 18-wheeler was on the other side of the bridge, totally destroyed, surrounded by cop cars. It was 11:30 AM on Friday, August 1. Anyone get a picture?

Are you talking about the bridge right after exit 1B? With the train line also going over the bridge?
If so, I have dozens of pictures of the trucks that hit that bridge. I just worked on the bridge reconstruction project there and over the last 8 years it was hit around 60 times. FedEx was the most frequent singular offender
Any trucker not familiar with the area usually follows their gps which frequently puts people on the hutch to save a few minutes from the traffic jam that is 95

Yeah, that one. This was the biggest wreck I have seen, total destruction, with a big piece of the truck by the side of the road.

Yeah we put these big steel box beams in front of and a little lower than the bridge to protect it and those things absolutely shred the tops off trucks. One truck hit it with so much speed it made it all the way sticking out the other side of the bridge while almost completely flipping upside down

Thanks for your contribution. What's the (just a ballpark estimate) bridge repair cost from a truck strike like this?

Honestly the trucks sustain more damage than the bridges do. On that bridge I mentioned we actually constructed "protection beams" which are big steel box girders that are meant to take the brunt of these hits. On that bridge the only damage that's been left behind is paint scratches lol

lol that’s right near me. Aaah the good ole Hutch, can openers every 3 miles fully signed and trucks banned. Still happens often.

I always wondered why they did not put a 9’ high horizontal bar (like those in front of parking garages) at the on-ramps. Yes, there are initial costs but over should prove beneficial with less issues/costs like this.
Yes, probably other concerns or issues need to be studied, but signs alone don’t appear to be working.

And that would be why trucks aren’t allowed on the parkways… For those who haven’t been there, it’s very well-marked. There are big, obvious signs all over the place. You really have to have your head wedged to do this, yet it happens pretty often.

The King Street bridge over the Hutch has crushed more trucks than any other. I keep joking with my wife that they should paint teeth around the outside cause if you’re in a truck or towing a container, it’s going to eat you!

I thought that bridge looked familiar. King Street it is.
The other popular one is James Farm Road, when trucks get off Route 8 by mistake.

This one is further down the Hutch, King Street has a stone wall across the top instead of a fence.

There's an old brain teaser:
How to get the truck out from under the bridge without having to disassemble the bridge or further ruin the truck?
Just let the air out of the tires, and the truck height will drop about six inches, enough to free it.

I know that bridge, it comes up a lot because truck drivers can't read and ignores "low bridge" and "trucks banned" warnings.
That's going to cost FedEx driver a lot, possibly losing his CDL.

More people potentially using car GPS units that route them incorrectly.
