Personally, I think he's still alive but in some kind of terrible condition.
If he were dead, they'd have sworn Vance in already.
My guess is some kind of planned surgery, maybe a stent for his heart. Because events weren't canceled, they just didn't schedule anything. And they're keeping him out of the public eye while he recovers, because he can't project weakness.
