“Trump Derangement Syndrome”

u/LeopardMedium 1d ago
Weren't they legitimately trying to get this added to the DSM at one point?
By the way, homosexuality was in the DSM until '87. Within my lifetime. SCOTUS already overturned Roe v Wade from a decade prior to that. Nothing is safe. This is scary shit.

He has mentioned trying to get it listed as an official diagnosis. That, combined with this overreach, is the one-two punch for arresting dissenters.

u/Artaxmudshoes 1d ago
At least one MAGA congressman has already introduced legislation making "trump derangement syndrome" a mental illness. They want to disappear anyone who's not in their cult, and they are not even trying to hide it.

And he got arrested in a sting operation for trying to lure an underage girl for sex. Only the best people.

Came here to say something similar. Hopefully these peace officers have a medical degree and can diagnose mental illnesses

I mean I wouldn't worry too much. I'm sure they will receive the proper training in dealing with citizens that are experiencing a mental health episode. There is no way more authority and responsibility comes with no extra training or knowledge, that seems like it would be irresponsible. Are all, they have always done that in the past. /s

This is why "TDS" Trump Derangement Syndrome has been pushed so hard the last year.

Yay! I mean aweee...
(To clarify I am in no way excited nor thrilled about needing to use the 2nd to defend the nation, no one should be.)

This appears to be an early draft. The bill was amended prior to passing and no longer gives unusually broad authority compared to similar laws in e.g. California.

They removed the part about being an "immediate risk" to themselves or others. How many Texas cops do you think believe trans people fit this category simply for existing?

It’s time for y’all to flee the state. Colorado is relatively close to Texas. Come to us. You are welcome here.

Oh, sure - because peace officers, in fucking Texas of all places, are equipped and qualified to make such professional determinations
this is what we’re fucking talking about when we say “defund the police”: quit giving them as a sole entity so much money, power, and control, and instead divert those resources into MULTIPLE agencies that actually CAN tailor-fit responses, actions, and initiatives to the situations at hand.
I hate this timeline

This already exists, nothing new. It's called a POED - Peace Officer Emergency Detention, and is often used for mental health emergencies. And police are terrified to use it because if it backfires in any way, their reasoning has to be ironclad.
Source: worked crisis mental health, and the number of people who SHOULD have been detained for treatment was FAR lower than the number who were.
Someone please explain how this is different so I can be well informed.

The language is deliberately vague to allow a broader range of arrests with questionable allegations. This is happening right as Texas votes to redistrict their maps, at the height of civil discourse. Republicans are also pushing for recognition of their ridiculous made up illness "Trump Derangement Syndrome". Whether or not all these things are related, the point I'm making is that this is clear police overreach and should alarm every Texan. Our rights are being taken away inch by inch, at every opportunity.

I hear ya, and I just went through the document. I think we may be overreacting a bit here.
When a Police Officer does an Emergency Detention for mental health (POED) it is NOT an arrest. Furthermore, when this occurs, the subject is taken to a hospital - not a jail. A physician MUST assess at this point.
Hospitals boot people SO fast. Ive seen people in active psychosis (stabbing self with feces-crusted needle to get the "spiders" under their skin, pulled from a room with literal poop-runes on the walls) get booted in under 24 hours because the moment they got a dose of trazadone, they were "safe."
This is a mental health directive, something we need direly in Texas. It already exists, but it makes crisis mental health workers jobs easier to get people help when they are in danger.
I can not stress enough how hard it is to get a cop to take someone in for mental health in Texas. I've begged them to and been laughed off because "we get a call every week when she walks butt naked down the road in traffic, that's just her baseline - so we won't take her in." Despite my 12 years in the field and 7+ years in college education on the subject. They have repeatedly explained to me they will only POED as a last resort because of the sheer amount of paperwork, red tape, and questions they have to answer about it. Even then, I've had a client booted in literal minutes from the ER because they were "safe" enough after a benadryl.
I hear your concern, and it is real. They are truly trying to take every right we have away. I just dont think this is it. But I also want to make sure we aren't fighting a directive that might actually make crisis mental health work more effective. I say that with love, and as someone with extensive experience in this exact sector. It does not behoove us to be alarmist in the wrong directions.

Families of adults with mental illness suffer from this too. It's nearly impossible to get the mentally ill person the help that they need if they don't want it.
I don't know about Texas and this bill but I suspect it only looks terrible to those who haven't had this experience.

u/MadWorldX1 1d ago
It is notoriously hard in Texas. In other states, mental health professionals can make the call and police just enforce it. In Texas, ONLY a cop gets to make the determination. For some reason.

u/shadowkoishi93 1d ago
We have to counter “TDS” with Obama Derangement Syndrome. Two can play at that game.
2
u/mrsrobotic 1d ago
Fellow crisis mental health clinician (albeit it in another state), came to say the same exact thing. This is a routine and welcomed scenario for peace officers to divert people with mental health issues to medical care, where they can be safely evaluated, instead of carted off to a jail or left in a dangerous situation in the community.

Ooof man. Remember when they tried to create "Trump derangement syndrome"? Texas is getting more totalitarian. Yikes.

Leave it to modern day klansmen in the government to want to return cops to the slave chasers they were in the 1800s.
