I love a torp over the defensive structure.

Obliterates the best defences.

And let's be honest - everyone loves Shoota.

Sorry we grabbed him from you guys

honestly worth it for this moment alone

22

u/SleakSquid Dockers 3d ago

Nah all good. We still love him, glad to see him back to how he played for us this year. Oh and side note, that pick turned into the Bolton trade getting the pick back for Reid. So could be a win win trade in the long run

Wild how many Pies / Freo trades have worked out well for both clubs over the years.

Not sure you want a ruckman to be the one on the end of it though lmao

This is one of the rare times when a commentator actually used athleticism appropriately and not in a racist way. Thought for sure he was going to screw it up by bending down but did it perfectly

u/Vinnie_Vegas Magpies 3d ago

a commentator actually used athleticism appropriately

I feel like they have trouble pointing out that it's about an athletic advantage you can use over your particular opponent.

Darcy Cameron isn't the most athletic ruckman around, but he has a clear speed and agility advantage over Reilly O'Brien, and used it perfectly here.

Well, technically he's a Follower, and he's doing his job following the ball :)

Defenders hate this one simple trick

With all the negative threads I thought it'd be good to post some actual footy on the sub! Was this the goal of the game? Felt like this was such a defining moment of the match

38

u/Madrical Collingwood 3d ago

Thanks for posting. It was a clever kick by Shoota. Bit of luck that the bounce didn't spray to the side too but Cameron made it work.

5

u/Vinnie_Vegas Magpies 3d ago

I don't think it's luck, a perfect low spiral will largely go straight because the ball stays in the same flat orientation pointing north-south on the ground.

Good fortune for Collingwood that Schultz executed the skill perfectly, I suppose, but no luck in a well kicked ball.

Absolutely massive in the context of the game. The Sidebottom goal before it broke Adelaide’s run but this goal out of nowhere fully swung the momentum back into Collingwood’s hand at HT

u/Striking_Resist_6022 Collingwood / Sydney 3d ago

Have to agree, goal of the game. Thought Cameron was gonna air ball for all money and he absolutely flushed it.

u/Stinkblee #NepoBabies 3d ago

It’s literally when I tuned in. I was like alright alright alright

7

u/Laddo22 Magpies 3d ago

Was absolutely the most excited I was during the game, and that’s saying something.

Exactly the kind of elite spectacle you hope for in finals footy!

Adelaide just don't look ready for finals. That was a horrid turnover. And they did it all night.

I guess that's why we genuinely never see a team win a flag without finals experience.

A surprising one for me was how much Dawson struggled with the pressure of the money given how cool he usually is.

ThilThorpe fucking up that goal really summed it up though. They just aren’t ready to win a flag yet.

2

u/aa73gc #NepoBabies 3d ago

You could see during the national anthem, they were like deer in the headlights

8

u/ImMalteserMan Adelaide 3d ago

Oh c'mon mate. It wasn't a bad turnover at all, yes it resulted in a goal but good for some reason the umpire called Dawson to play on, from the behind vision all he did was turn around and that put him under pressure and he had to just get rid of it.

This replay should be about celebrating a sick trip and not criticising a kick under pressure.

15

u/Tiny_Sherbet8298 Magpies 3d ago

Maybe it was because the ump called him to play on but tbf Dawson did this all night. I was quite surprised as pregame I thought he would at least be one of your guys that had a cool head.

1

u/D0ggydog11 Pies 3d ago

Just fwiw, I think the ump called play on because he tried to immediately roll on, then saw oncoming and stopped but the ump deemed he had played on.

He made a similar call on Schultz in the second quarter so I suspect they were trying to be hot on "if they step off, theyre off".

I think thats what happened anyway...

1

u/DirectorFragrant4834 Tigers 3d ago

How is it anything but a bad turnover? They should've had a deep inside 50 from that play.

36

u/Propaslader Collingwood 3d ago

I've done this exact same thing thousands of times in AFL Live 2005. Not impressed

9

u/Exambolor Collingwood 3d ago

I can still remember the keyboard combo on PC to launch the torp, hold down D and E

6

u/Propaslader Collingwood 3d ago

I played that game for years as a kid. Fond memories of constantly launching new seasons and immediately loading my team up with Luke Ball, Lance Franklin, and anyone else I liked

Darcy Cameron finishing like a small forward.

Why the heck was the first Adelaide kick called play on though??

2

u/dukephoenix Adelaide 3d ago

That's what I want to know, doesn't look like he stepped, was it called not 15?

22

u/Environmental-Fig377 Eagles 3d ago

It’s a highly underrated kick. Yes, alot of luck involved but consider the following:

  • shortest bloke on the field
  • kicks a 45-50m torp on the run
  • clears all the defensive targets to land 2 metres in front of the ruckman at full tilt, and
  • textbook bounce upon landing to give Cameron every chance of kicking the goal.

12

u/Maximumlnsanity #NepoBabies 3d ago

Cameron finishing with a picture perfect dribble kick on a bouncing ball is also kinda ridiculous, especially with how perfectly he hit it

7

u/Nose_Beers_85 University 3d ago

45-50 is selling him very short! It went a minimum 60m before it bounced.

Field is 167m long, and he kicked it 5m short of halfway (just beyond edge of centre circle, 10m diameter) and it landed about 25m out, if not a bit closer.

63-65 metre piss missile with my estimates, hopefully the lab or whatever they call themselves highlight it

2

u/dogbert_93 Blues 3d ago

Don't forget, the umpire calling Dawson to play on. He would have gone back on the mark and they go inside 50.

8

u/Gods-Defence Brisbane Lions 🏆 '24 3d ago

Genuinely looked a chance to roll through if Cameron and the others were maybe another 5 metres behind it, crazy effort

8

u/Time_Meeting_2648 Magpies 3d ago

What a fuckn barrel! Shooter is a gun, has been all year tbh

2

u/Halicadd Tasmania Devils 3d ago

He's been really good the last few weeks especially. Huge pressure and goal assists every game.

8

u/raresaturn Collingwood 3d ago

Cameron timed that boot to perfection

8

u/Bright_Bell_1301 Adelaide 3d ago

Such a weird decision by Thilthorpe to pass rather than taking his 50. Such a weird decision by the umpire to call play on. But the umps were ok overall. This loss was fully on us.

1

u/Striking_Resist_6022 Collingwood / Sydney 3d ago

It was on us. You got done by a better team on the night.

1

u/Bright_Bell_1301 Adelaide 3d ago

Yeah, because we weren't at our best .. far from it

u/elektriiciity Carlton 3d ago

What a beautiful handball from Quaynor

12

u/wattyaknow Hawks 3d ago

Legit though, why was that called play on from the Crows kick, looked 15 to me

11

u/ImMalteserMan Adelaide 3d ago

I reckon he was stiff, marked it with momentum, turned around and took one step that looked like he was stopping but they were hot on it all night. Another time Milera marked on the run and immediately stopped and was called to play on.

-2

u/Nice_Astronomer3102 West Coast 3d ago

What momentum he was sidestepping before he took the mark lol. Bit stiff but he clearly turns to go

16

u/PetrifyGWENT Bombers / Giants 3d ago

It was paid 15. Dawson marked it and took 2 steps forward for some reason without turning around to see there was a player right behind him.

11

u/wattyaknow Hawks 3d ago

Yeah, still don't think that should be called play on. He was running backwards and literally turns to face towards his goal.

-5

u/Tiny_Sherbet8298 Magpies 3d ago

How is that not play on? He clearly lands and intends to sprint off before realising there’s a pies player right there.

5

u/wattyaknow Hawks 3d ago

Because a player is allowed to turn around to face their goals. If you're calling that play on then basically any mark that is taken with the player moving towards their goals is play on.

-5

u/Tiny_Sherbet8298 Magpies 3d ago

Lmao. Look at the way his calling for the ball and checking around, he thinks no one is near him. Not that this has anything to do with the umpires call, but it shows he clearly intended to take off thinking he was alone.

No one takes a mark and turns towards goal by taking an aggressive step forward.

1

u/wattyaknow Hawks 3d ago

Yeah nah, a player calling for the ball doesn't automatically mean he's going to play on from the kick.

He literally lands turning towards goal because he is moving that way, his whole momentum is going that way, he stops straight away. This is not play on and never should be.

-3

u/Tiny_Sherbet8298 Magpies 3d ago

I don’t even know why I’m responding, you are clearly just not looking at the footage or being daft on purpose.

4

u/wattyaknow Hawks 3d ago

I don't know why I'm replying to someone that clearly has a bias to the team that benefited from this call.

Have a good one mate, enjoy the week off.

5

u/dogbert_93 Blues 3d ago

Agree with you (hawks flair)

It ain't even close, it's a terrible call, he did not play on

For some reason there were like 6 of these massive torps down the ground last night

This and Daicos’s goal in Q1 were both amazing moments.

5

u/OrangeBirdHouse Collingwood Magpies 3d ago

the craziest thing about this is that Schultz is probably the last person you'd expect to kick a big torp, he's an amazing pressure player but normally isn't the furthest kicker in the team so this was pretty clutch from him.

This goal single-handedly vindicated every single moment where I've yelled at the TV "just kick the bloody thing!!!" in the past month

2

u/bazoski1er Melbourne 3d ago

Great goal, the play on call against Dawson was rubbish though

2

u/dogbert_93 Blues 3d ago

Why was that called play on?

Its crazy how we don't really talk about game changing things like this. I mean he goes back on the mark there Crows go inside 50 potentially lead by over a goal.

Instead umpires says play on and pies take the lead.

Nothing spoken of it.

Its just.... hard to accept really.

3

u/TorresUMADBRO Geelong 3d ago

Yeah, I was watching this just now thinking I was insane reading all these sycophantic comments (an r/afl specialty) how this was play on? Horrific call from the umps and important considering Pies got a lot of momentum from this.

1

u/HERMANNtheMUNSTER Crows 3d ago

Great goal, this was the moment I was certain we wouldn't win.

Getting the ball forward by any means necessary to break the zone just reminded me so much of the rampaging premiership Tigers.

Nicks never has a plan B to counter tactical coaches.
