I would've just told her that you don't play second fiddle and walked away. If she wanted to date you, she would've before dating John.
I disagree with this. He didn't care so much she dated someone instead of him, he specifically didn't like that she dated John because he is such an AH so that has him questioning her values.
She wants to think it's because she rejected him before and OP is jealous of John, because that gets her off the hook for dating a bad person and being considered of low character as well.
Not sure what "beneath him" means. He cared that she dated an AH who cheats on every woman he dates, treats people like crap and bullied an overweight girl who is trying to lose weight by joining their running group.
He cares that she dated someone she knew was a jerk. Like it or not, who we associate with can reflect on us, especially if we were aware ahead of time or became aware and didn't end the relationship, platonic or romantic. Jane's choice of who she dated instead of OP matters more than that she dated someone else, and that's entirely fair.
