I’m ok with most of this, but saying “after the war was over” is blatantly false. The war was not over. It had been ongoing for 100 years and did not end until Aang took down the firelord.

The Fire Nation officially declared the War to be over when they took Ba Sing Se.

Katara even says this much in Sozin’s Comet Part 1.

They successfully conquered the Earth Kingdom capital. The only resistance left to the EQ were small rebel pockets.

Now yes, the other nations didn’t find the war to be over until Aang took down Ozai.

But from the FN’s perspective, they officially won the moment Ba Sing Se, and the Earth Kingdom alongside it fell, and they were convinced the Avatar had died.

So from the FN’s and Zuko’s perspective. Hiring an assassin to kill a child is murder. As neither you nor your country consider themselves at war anymore.

I just wanna be clear with you, I agree Zuko hiring combustion man was truly awful. That act regardless of circumstance is awful. Trying to kill a child “in” or “out” of war is reprehensible. By definition. That is a child.

I just don’t think the supposed before/after you are claiming exists.

Colonizers can declare whatever, doesn’t mean it’s true. Despite “declaring the war over” they were still having war room sessions. The royal fire family declaring something for morale doesn’t make that a truth. We literally have proof of them rewriting history about their genocide of the Air Nation.

So if we wanna get technical about it, the fire nation was out to and already committing genocide. All of the times the fire nation individuals did something to support fire nation “victory”, it was in support of that genocide. So all if it is reprehensible.
