It is. Its heavily implied she planned to go live in Omashu post-war in the novel. She joined a group which was affiliate to the white lotus and help liberate ba sing se she and her boyfriend liberated the brainwashed girls.

That's cool!

Believable. Be Sing Se would have a large resistance movement. Would have been funny to see her meet Zuko again when he is touring the city with the Earth King and Aang

I wish I could see that of just that guy she dated that 1 time is the new leader of the used to be fascist empire trying to figure out what kingdom gets what land or what fire nation "colony" is to just be allowed to be its own thing.

I know its what people want but that sounds so contrived. To me she was just a regular person who thought zuko was cute and then she just went on to do regular stuff like get a job and maybe raise a family. She was cute but not noteworthy, and thats okay imo. Average people who dont go on adventures or are affiliated with Big Names should exist in stories. Makes the world seem way bigger to me.

It reminds me of star wars creating half baked "interesting" stories to every halloween monster mask background character. Its just too much.

Lots of average people helped during WW2 so it’s not out of the question

She may not be noteworthy but I think she did play a role in showing what headspace Zuko was in at the time. The first time I saw tales of ba sing se I was like what was the point of her? Zuko is dumb, this chick really likes him. After 2 or 3 times of rewatching the series, I realise, oh, Zuko thinks that if he shows who he really is to her, she wouldn't accept him. The people of the earth kingdom didn't accept him in Zuko Alone, the Fire nation didn't accept him. Even his own family doesn't accept him. So bro thinks this chick won't like him either. But actually, I think she would! She could have been perfect for him. Which is ironic and sad but beautiful at the same time.

I disagree, mostly because this one was actually done well. They were in a state of war, and their city was literally occupied by fascists. If you look at Chinese history, and the war this show draws from, it’s full of ordinary peasants who felt a deep sense of duty to take up arms and defend their homeland. Especially since, the only reason she even joined the resistance was because a noble, aligned with the Fire Nation occupiers, bought her friend. Her friend’s dad was a gambling addict, and the family had to choose between selling her and losing their home. Complaining that this is unrealistic is like saying history doesn’t make sense because a ton of future Cold War power players and regular people just happened to be in Germany in 1945.

This queen went and found someone who actually deserves her

u/PianistDistinct1117 29d ago

Zuko really deserved her, just not this version of Zuko.

Zuko has Mai

u/PianistDistinct1117 29d ago

I said he deserved her, not that they were meant to be together.

They get back together

1

u/RoboticScalp 28d ago

When?

1

u/bay_coconut 25d ago

3 years after smoke and shadow

1

u/Green_Artist_5550 23d ago

Mai is barely a character

1

u/bay_coconut 23d ago

Can say the same for Jin

u/akgogreen 25d ago

Mai leaves Zuko in the comics for some dude who's a complete tool

u/bay_coconut 25d ago
  1. She hadn’t even met Kei Lo before she broke up with Zuko so you’re objectively wrong.
  2. They barely lasted that long in smoke and shadow. They literally broke up at the end.
  3. Ashes of the academy takes place within the same year in which Zuko gives Mai the job as instructor in the academy.

It’s more than likely they get back together

I apologize, I was unfamiliar with your game.

In all honesty I havent read the comics, some are sitting on my shelf, I based my comment on screenshots ive seen on various subs and random comment threads about it.

Now I really want to read them to know whats what lol

We see a brief shot of her in S3E1 when its explained how Azula and the Dai Li let in Fire Nation troops to occupy the city.

She doesn't appear in LoK.

There's actually a novel that just came out (City of Echoes) that covers her story around the events of this episode. But idk if you want spoilers and i haven't finished the book myself.

Wait, is this the first book outside of the chronicles of the avatar series??? Or are there more?? IM SO OUT OF THE LOOP

11

u/MrBKainXTR 29d ago

Well the first novel yes. Its the first installment on a series focusing on "unsung heroes" of the avatar universe.

Though there have been comics (including graphic novels), novelization/adaptation books, artbooks, and scrapbooks

I started searching immediately and I’m already in route to my local library!! :) ty

I like her more than Mai, I’ve been a bai hater since I was like 8

17

u/ghost_uwu1 29d ago

we just got a book about her detailing her back story, but she doesn’t appear in LoK

6

u/CNJUNIPERLEE 29d ago

The novel answers your question.

As a Mai hater, I think this queen deserved to be his wife and more screen time

12

u/Dartagnan1083 29d ago

I mean, I actually like Mai, but see her and Zuko's love being more of a trauma bond with their families dragging them into the war and fire-nation nobility crap.

Jin was a window into growth and possibly beyond what he might leave behind.

3

u/TiredAllTheTimee 29d ago

They just came out with a new avatar book series where each novel will focus on an unsung hero in the Avatar world and the first one is about Jin. It’s called Avatar Legends: City of Echos by Judy I. Lin if you’re interested!

3

u/The_Creative_Vee 28d ago

Read "city of echoes" it's the new novel in the avatar chronicles series.

u/TOkun92 29d ago

I don’t think she ever made another appearance.

But I like to think Zuko showed up at Ba Sing Se for a meeting or something and they ran into each other at Iroh’s tea shop (with her admitting she would go there every day hoping he’d show up). They got to talking and decided to go on a date.

Then they eventually got married and had a daughter.

3

u/g8vy 29d ago

they just came out with a novel about her it’s called city of echoes

Run over by a toyota corolla

2

u/regaldawn 29d ago

Mai tracked her down after she learned she kissed Zuko.

1

u/raspberriez247 27d ago

Ok I’m not sure I hallucinated this or not, but is there not a comic about Zuko & Mai “confronting” Jin somewhere by the fountain? And Mai does the whole knife-throwing apple thing at Jin’s head? And Zuko pretends he doesn’t know her?

It’s supposed to take place before the events of Book 3: Fire. But I can’t recall if it was a fan comic or canon or not.

2

u/Sea-Jacket-4686 28d ago

I saw a funny thing one time, not sure where probably a tiktok Reddit thread video, where it was theorizing that she’s one of Bolins relatives in LoK. Mostly in a “Y’know, when I was your age I went on a date with the firelord.” “That’s nice grandma.” Type of way.

2

u/ronaldo2094_ 28d ago

For one why would this episode not be canon, two, why would she be mentioned in korra?? It was just a random interaction so zuko could see the actual damage the war has caused on people. Not every single person that they came in contact with has to be mentioned all the damn time

4

u/RangerHaze 29d ago

She is the main character in a book. City of Echos

3

u/combustibledaredevil 29d ago

“Damn I fucked the fire lord.”-her in a few years probably

2

u/Midnight1899 29d ago

Diva? If anyone is not a diva, it’s her.

1

u/TSLstudio 28d ago

There's a new novel about it! Going to read it soon 😇

1

u/BasicFanny 26d ago

She’s a cutie 💚💚💚

Exploded 😔

u/Mis24601 24d ago

Loved her she was so cute. Wrote a fanfic where she actually ended up being Mako and Bolin’s grandma to bring her back into the avatar world lol.

1

u/PurpleDruid1 29d ago

I doubt its cannon but I luke the theory that she's Mako and Bolin's Grandmother in LOK

0

u/SwordMaster9501 29d ago

I don't see the resemblance in appearance or personality. Also, it's unlikely that she would be living in such squalor knowing the Fire Lord and being associated with the Jasmine dragon and all.

Is clothing like that supposed to be fairly loose like it shows? Or is she just stacked? Really really not trying to be wierd here....
