If Toph wasnt already down bad for Sokka, then him fighting off fire nation soldiers with a broken arm and leg and sacrificing his cool space sword just to catch her would definitely change that.

Sometimes I think about how we didn't hear Sokka say "Oh, actually I'm dropping you on a blimp!" before letting go of her. Did Toph think she was dying for some of that height?

She probably heard and felt the vibrations of the crash, she just didn’t necessarily know what caused it

But maybe she at leadt heard a big crash and could assume something big crashed into the blimp
But evidently not sinxe even after she landed, she asked if Boomerang came back

It's sad and scary cuz at the end of the day, they're kids fighting in a war. Toph is dangling in the air and unable to see anything. All she could feel is the hand of the most optimistic person she knows and he's telling her it may be the end.

Just thought about this from Toph's perspective.
She's hanging there, completely blind to everything but Sokka and maybe the airship she's on, which uses steam power as propulsion so it's one big ball of vibration. Sokka has just said "This is the end" whey she hears/"sees" a stupendous crash and gets dropped into the void without a word of explanation.
And Sokka is the one who breaks a leg on landing.

The little details help here. Toph essentially heard/felt the fire benders running away last minute, as well as the tiny pieces of rubble falling onto the blimp below her. Indicative by her first response of “what happened, did boomerang come back?”, showing that she’s questioning things from the understanding that things worked out for their side.

I love that from S1E1 to S3E18-21 Boomerang always comes back, not always in the most boomerang way. Sometimes it takes a while. But Sokka always gets Boomerang back.
