Advice Received Is Animal Farm worth reading?

I wasn't allowed to ask this on any book-related sub, so here I am. I've been considering reading Animal Farm by George Orwell (jorjor wel), but I don't want to read it if it's not... good... for lack of a better word. I've just begun consistently reading so I don't really know much about literature, although I've read some classics and also many of Shakespeare's works. What can you tell me about the book without spoiling it? Can you rate it on a scale from 1-10 and explain why? I really want to make sure it's something I'm interested in reading because I only like to read physical copies of books, and I insist on buying my own copies of all the books I read, so, you know. All responses are appreciated!

You will learn about the reason people use that porcine slur on police.

Has nothing to do with Orwell! It’s been around as a slur for the corrupt and greedy since the 19th century, and was originally a reference to police corruption – all their noses stuffed in the trough.

It has deep allegory to mid 1900s world politics. Each animal or group of animals represents a different person or group in history. That being said I think one of the things that makes it great is that it is not weighed down by this. If you didn’t know about the allegory it still stands on its own as a great story about farm animals. Overall 8.5 out of 10 in my opinion. I have read it twice and look forward to my next read of it.

It's a deep allegory to world politics over the entire course of human history LOL

It is a classic piece of literature, not for the brain-dead. It opens your mind so you can learn to recognize resonating behaviors in our daily lives and political arenas.

Also recommending to read it! And it's a pretty short book :)

I read it while being in a hospital at 18. Its quite small and i really enjoyed it. Read it in english, too (not my native language).

If you want to know what its about - its kind of about societies and politics but the fun fact is, its not really. It is about animals on a farm, some have power, others dont.

I think you should read it. Can you elaborate on why you cant ask this question on book related subs??? This is quite astonishing...

Thank you for the description! The reason why I couldn't post this to any book-related sub is because this kind of question went against at least one rule in every sub that I tried. I couldn't find any book subreddits that would let me ask this. helped

It’s good, and so are libraries. Get a library card and buy copies of the books you love.

Yes, also 1984 is heavy but very relevant currently.. Disinformation etc

It's a gross misrepresentation of communism penned by a snitch. Brilliant stylist though.

i thought he was more ofa spy than snitch , but reckon one can be both

Indeed a gross representation of Communism in that it briefly worked. Communism never works at all.

I was born and raised in communism, but of course, Joe Shmoe from Kenfucky knows better.

Yes it’s worth reading. It’s both entertaining and thought provoking.

It's also tiny. You can get through it in an afternoon.

It is one of the most important books you'll ever read. I hope that folks will still be reading it in 500 years.

It's an illustration of abuse of power, corruption, propaganda, lies, the whole nine yards
This is what politicians actually do. Ignore the ads and the propaganda

Anything by Orwell is worth reading. In fact, read it three times

It is nearly required reading these days. Read it before it is taken off the shelves.

I have never read it myself but my brother has and he insists that it is one of the best books he has read. It is a commentary on politics. With each of the animals representing something. That's really all I know

1

u/rodentparent 7d ago

That sounds convincing! Thanks! helped

I don't know if this question applies to this subreddit but if it doesn't, please let me know so I can take it down myself.
