A lot of people talk about how depressing and dark AK winters can be... so what's something you like about it?

School Transfer

I’m 40 and completely new to college. I’m registered to begin UAS in the spring since I missed the fall deadline. Someone mentioned to me that I should attend an online community college or an online college until the spring and then transfer. Is there anyone in this sub that’s done this? If so, is there any advice you can offer me? What school did you transfer from? I’m going for my bachelors in elementary education if that helps. I don’t want to pick the wrong online school. My advisory meeting isn’t until next month. Thanks!

Has Alaska always been the last stop for people who have ruined their lives back home?

I saw this video https://youtu.be/gObJjT6w72E?si=nljYU7Np-jCZZhKK about the police officer in Juneau and was reminded of all the times I've encountered people like this guy. I've had doctors, teachers and co-workers that have come to Alaska to try and reinvent themselves. I'm all for people getting a second chance at an honest life but sometimes these folks are running from something dark. It's probably not as common these days as it used to be in the 80's when I was a kid but is it still an issue or am I alone in experiencing this?

Is there really anything else to be said to demonstrate what an absolute empty suit he is?

Absolutely kicking myself for not going out and watching the sunset from a good vantage point tonight, I had a feeling it was going to be a good one and still just stayed home watching Netflix 😭

Interior AK snow machine gear recommendations

Does anyone have good recommendations for jackets and bibs for snow machining in the interior? I take a couple 70 mile trips in the winter and last year got frostbite with what I was wearing (it was about 35 below not including wind chill). I’ve got bunny boots but need a good suit/bibs/jacket. Looking to spend probably $1000 total.

Thanks for the help

Does Ketchikan have medical specialists (cardiologists, ophthalmologists, etc) that are there all the time or do they just rotate in?

Resubmitted because mods require the title to match the title in the linked article.

Hopefully this extreme abuse of power by the Alaska Supreme Court can be overturned.

More LandscapesšŸ” Is anyone familiar with the Chitanana River?

Post image
29 Upvotes

My wife and I have been thinking about a cabin somewhere along the Yukon or up a tributary. The Chitanana flows into the Tanana and is kind of between Manley and Tanana village. From the outside it seems like a relatively easy place to access, but I’ve seen a couple of old posts on a forum that made it sound as though it was very silted up and tough traveling without an airboat.

Just figured I’d see if anyone from this sub has ever poked around up there.

Picture is from the Sulatna, down towards Ruby.

Growing Up In Rough Parts of Alaska

I grew up in Fairbanks and was a child during the seventies. Yeah, the pipeline days. When 2nd Avenue was almost two miles of bars on both sides of the street and the kinds of things that went on there...yikes. Just yikes.

I didn't realize that Fairbanks was a dangerous place to grow up, even though I experienced violence from dozens of peers on a daily basis. In my thirties, I was living in the states and talking with a bunch of friends who had grown up in a variety of places and circumstances were floored by the scope of the violence that was everyday there. My high school had about 400 students and two or three died every year. The circumstances were often pretty bad.

Children and young women went missing up there all the time and were never found again, unless it was a corpse over a dozen years later.

I know there are some other parts of Alaska that are pretty bad and I'm curious what people who grew up there experienced.

Did you know how bad it was or did you find out later?

I'm not trying to get anyone to relive any traumas they might have had. I'm not interested in talking about what got done to me and stuff here, just the scope of what went on and how much it was normalized over time.

For example, there were still some really awful things going on after the pipeline was built. There were lots of people who got stuck up here without the money to leave and sometimes they'd get desperate. However, things were so out of control while the pipeline was being built, that even violence above and beyond what goes on in most places seemed calmer than it was for some time.

piggy backing off of the post here about how wild it was to grow up in Alaska in pre90s. Excluding The Frozen Ground, can anyone think of any good movies that capture the vibe?
