Discussion What would be your all-time, Socceroo, penalty shootout lineup?

1 through to 5 and the Goalkeeper? Any era.

Yeah I'll probably trade Neill for Muscat

Nah

Muscat was a wicked PK taker. Always converted for Melbourne Victory

I meant that I would take Neill out and put Muscat in. I agree with you.

Remember when Muscat missed that one v Sydney in the final? Course you do.

Jedinak, Jedinak, Jedinak, Jedinak, Jedinak

He is genuinely one of the best penalty takers in the history of football ever. Never missed a single professional penalty… ever.

In goals Schwarzer ofc. Redmayne actually didn’t have that great of a save ratio, he just got crazy lucky when it counted

Came here to say this haha. Wonder if Jedinak ever had a 'keeper get their hand on the ball, or hit the inside of the woodwork?

Lol Transfermarkt says: "Total Penalties Missed: No entries available"

Jedinak has also never had a penalty scored against him

Schwarzer as GK no question. Craig Moore, Tony Vidmar, Kevin Muscat, Mile Jedinak and John Aloisi as the penalty takers.

Very biased to the golden gen era but that was peak.

Muscat on penalties always brings back good memories

In more ways than one.

Muscat had an immense record for penalties... converting them and giving them

Goalkeeper: Bosnich. His save rate is pretty decent, didn't face a lot of penalties though. Has a tidy 23% save rate across his career. Ryan would be my next option with a save rate of 16%. Schwarzer only has a save rate of 12%.

Penalty takers -

  1. Jedinak. Self explanatory. 16 penalties taken in his career. 16 penalties scored.

  2. Mooy. 14 penalties taken, only 1 was saved in his entire career.

  3. Viduka. Similar to Mooy. 10 Penalties taken, only 1 was missed in his career.

  4. Milligan. 16 Penalties taken, only 2 missed.

  5. Muscat. 30 Penalties taken. Only 2 missed.

Can't see the stats of most of the older guys, but statistically, these 5 are our best penalty takers, and Bosnich is the best penalty saver.

To be fair those who don’t take viduka wouldn’t select him purely for missing vs Uruguay

I could be misremembering and can't be bothered looking it up, didn't he have a famously not-so-great Socceroos career compared to his club career? He was the anti-Miroslav Klose.

He fell into the trap all our forwards did in that era of the national team, playing up front on his own expected to make miracles happen in a side not playing to his strengths. Say what you want about Tim Cahill but what he was able to do single handedly in that set up was a massive effort, we probably don't make it to 3 world cups if it wasn't for the goals Tim managed to score.

11 goals for Aus. Not a bad return, but I think you're right if compared to his club career. He was very good for Leeds, Middlesbrough, Celtic in particular so far as goals per game. He has nearly 100 premier league goals.

I forgot about Muscat, very good taker.

Jedinak. Bloke never missed for national team or Palace (maybe his entire career have no idea).

And then I would clone him 5 times, to take the rest of the penalties

Leaving Mooy of your staring 11. Straight to jail. Hate to say it but all 5 pen takers are muscat.

Kevin Muscat easily in the top 5, alongside Jedinak as high confidence.

Vidmar with the left, though he was right footed

Schwarzer in goal

  1. Aloisi
  2. Muscat
  3. Mooy
  4. Emerton
  5. Jedinak

I’m too young to know much about the players before 2008 some of which would definitely be in this top 5

Viduka missed his most important penalty .

Cant pick him

It was intentional added to the drama. You haven’t lived until you’ve been in a stadium and hear 80,000 people collectively groan.

We all make mistakes

2

u/iheartOPsmum Melbourne City 3d ago

Not me, I would’ve scored it.

2

u/BigBlueMan118 Sydney FC 3d ago

To be fair his stats on Transfermarkt says only 1 missed but 9 scored for his whole career. Probably still not in my top handful though. Mooy score 13 from 14 so has a better record.

The lack of respect for Tony Vidmar here is shameful!
