Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)
This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.
USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Odido delaying in purpose?
We have had the green fiber optics on the street installed for more than a year. Would it be possible that Odido and Ziggo are delaying getting installation of fiber optics in houses on purpose?
I have tried in multiple forms but I cannot get Odido to install fiber optics at my apartment

Help Identifying a Piece in Rijksmuseum
(Hey, sorry if this is the wrong place for this)
I'm looking for the name of a piece I saw in Rijksmuseum, in the 20th Century Collection. A very brief short film of a man floating along a river in a canoe and smoothing out the ripples he makes with a trowel. That's it! I didn't record the name of it or the artist, and it's not listed on the Rijksmuseum website (from what I can tell). Trying to Google it has been unsuccessful as well. If anyone has been recently and remembers, I'd really appreciate it!
EDIT: Ger van Elk 'The Flattening of the Brook's Surface'
Thank you so much everyone who replied!!

Private therapy for BPD?
Hi all, i suspect I have a borderline personality disorder and while I am on the waiting list for an evaluation, I would like to know if someone can recommend a private therapist who specialises in bpd (and DBT would be nice)? I often have a very hard time dealing with my emotions and want to start with therapy asap. Preferably Amsterdam or area but further away is also fine. Thanks in advance for your advices 🙏

Why is south part of Van Woustraat neglected?
I live close to Van Woustraat, and I’ve been noticing something odd. The northern part of the street has been fully renovated with proper bike lanes, wide sidewalks, and generally a much nicer layout. It really feels like the municipality invested there to improve both traffic flow and the overall quality of life.
But once you head further south, it’s a completely different story. The municipality once had plans to renovate that part too, but they were cancelled. The contrast is striking. Where the “cute” Amsterdam houses are, everything feels well taken care of. But as soon as those houses end, the street changes drastically, it’s like night and day. Biking there is a nightmare.
Honestly, it feels like the city is prioritizing infrastructure that benefits tourists (nicer spots, picture-perfect houses). The newer part of De Pijp seems neglected in general, and it makes me wonder if this is an intentional choice or just something that fell off the agenda.
Does anyone know why the southern part was left out? And if there are any new plans in the works?

Have around 9 years of experience as software developer, lost my job and now I feel so unemployable here...
Hey people,
I am not exactly sure why I am even posting on Reddit, but it seems that there are some software developers in here, so maybe I can get a good advice? I am just trying cause I am lost...
Sooo, I graduate in CS around 10 years ago and I moved/started working in Amsterdam when I was a junior dev... I was mainly a backend developer, used Python a lot and worked a bit also with other languages like Scala or Go.
I changed a few jobs in the past years, then I landed an amazing job around 4 years ago. I worked for a couple of years as backend developer here too and then my manager noticed I had some leadership skills and really good communication skills.
I started leading some small tecnical projects (3), but I was never officially a team lead and I was not managing people. I was really happy about my new role, I still kept helping around with coding stuff (mostly about complex part of our backend when someone new needed to work on it but i did not code much), but I stopped coding a lot.
My leadership experience went really well cause my fellow developers colleagues were listening and respecting me cause I was one of them (<3) and I was understanding their struggle and doing my best to make their life easier. I also kept giving technical contributions to the projects, mainly outside of my regular expertise (I started doing some devops work).
While I was just starting enoying my new role and formalising my career path, we were laid off...
When I realised I needed to look for another job, I started deeeeply panicking because I literally don't know what to do or where to find guidance.
I still enjoy coding and problem solving, but I am not sure if I enjoy being a developer anymore. I also did not code for a while, so I don't feel sharp anymore...
Leaving the tech field is also a big no: in the end I still love technologies.
Many people suggested me to try joining Booking.com as developer and then try to keep advancing with my management path over there. Good suggestion, but the problem is that I suck at live coding...
I tried to apply as team/project lead in other tech companies, but I don't have enough experience (it is understandable, i was officially never a team lead) so companies are rejecting me.
Applying for a regular developer job now seems so hard... A lot of places are looking for people that have already experience with the tech stack that they are using or they are making it clear that leading project or a team won't be possible...
Maybe someone was in my same situation and got out of it? Any help would be appreciated...

Have I been scammed in the RLD
I was in De Wallen tonight. I got to a girl in the window and asked for the prices. She told me 100€ for 20 minutes. I agreed to go inside. Once upside, she did me a handjob. She had a « menu » printed – to get a blowjob I had to pay 250€ more (what I did). Quick sex what even 450€ more (I didn’t pay for that). Did I get scammed?

Sell a place after just 6 months
Hi everyone,
I recently bought a house, but after just a month here I realized I might have made a big mistake. The place is a bit isolated, and to get to the main street I have to go through a tunnel that feels pretty creepy at night. I also live close to some schools, at first I thought that would be nice, but it turns out it’s super noisy in the mornings, and I often need to work from home. On top of that, there’s a homeless guy who hangs around near my building, which has been a bit stressful to deal with.
All of this is making me feel really overwhelmed. I end up trying to stay away from home as much as I can, but the whole situation is stressing me out and making me anxious.
Now I’m seriously thinking about selling this place and moving again, even if it means using up most of my savings. The idea honestly scares me as I don’t really know how it works, and I’m worried the house will be undervalued because I’m selling after only six months. Plus, I feel kind of silly going through the whole moving process again so soon, especially in this crazy housing market.
Has anyone been through something similar? Any advice would mean a lot. Thanks!

Boekenclub
Dm me/ reageer hieronder!!

Lloyd Hotel
Hi everyone, I have a bit of a weird request. Back in 2014, we stayed at the Lloyd Hotel in Amsterdam. They had a huge guest book in the lobby where you could leave a message. I left one for my husband that said, “You are my safe place.”
It would be amazing if someone could find it and take a photo for me. I would appreciate it so much!!! I believe in the power of the internet and kind people!!

Musicians to Jam in Amsterdam
Hi all,
I'm a 29 year old musician (as a hobby) and would love to find likeminded people to connect and do jam sessions together in Amsterdam. If we click maybe we can even form a band. I play electric guitar since my childhood although I am really into playing drums lately and would love to practice more. My favorite genres are progressive rock & metal but I listen to all kinds of music so I'm open to experiment with different styles. I would love to make something unique out of this!
Please hit me up if you'd like to get out of your comfort zone, get away from work and all the struggles of our daily lives. Peace!

Tip: you can adopt a garbage container
Are you also done with the mess around the garbage container in your neighborhood? You can 'adopt' one. I started this a few weeks ago and it's great! The area directly outside my front door is a lot cleaner for little effort.
What you do: you make sure area around the container stays clean. If there is garbage next to it, you put it in the container. You get a key to open it from the side to make it easier. If the container is full or the garbage doesn't fit in the container, you WhatsApp the gemeente and they usually fix it the same day (much quicker than normal). You can even ask handhaving to come and write a fine, if an address is visible.
It only costs me a few minutes every couple of days and it stays much cleaner! Garbage isn't an eye sore for days on end! Also, I feel people dump less because, a) the container is full less often and b) dumped garbage attracts more dumping.
