Question
Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)
This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.
READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.
HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.
TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.
WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.
WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.
RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.
USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.
DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.
I’m an American flying into Amsterdam for a few days, and I want to rent a cycle to bike down to Rotterdam where my friend lives. Is there a rental service where I can rent a cycle in Amsterdam and return it in Rotterdam?
Alternatively, any recommendations for good cycle rental shops that will rent out a basic bike for 3 days with a pannier rack that I can then return back to Amsterdam before flying out? Thank you guys!
tour de amsterdam rents out race bikes, which is what you will want to get instead of a basic bike for that distance. While you can cycle between these two locations, unless you are an avid cyclist, it is better to take the train.
Any recommendations for the best places to casually check out Sail? Looking for some good locations to go for a walk and experience it without tickets or formal events.
Pretty much anywhere begind central station, but expect it to be very busy. If you have a car available you can opt to drive somewhere on Wednesday when the ships come in, again gonna be busu so be early!
Hello! I was fortunate enough to get to travel to Amsterdam for the first time last summer and it’s still one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been! While I was there, I purchased dog bandanas with the name “heppie Dit” and they are the best bandanas ever, but I can’t find them online anywhere! I have been looking for more of a selection and was curious is anyone knows anything about them! (Well aware that this is a silly and frivolous question, but I am curious! They are the best!)
Hi all, apologies if this sounds like a dumb question. I was thinking of heading out West along the North Sea canal to catch the Sail Out parade on Sunday afternoon. I know that Amsterdam has been absolutely packed all week, does anyone know if it’s likely to also be packed along the route out of the city? I was thinking of going to Spaarndam but perhaps everyone else has the same idea!
I'm wondering if anyone knows of a place where I can rent an open canoe? (All the places I can find on google maps and the wiki seem to only have kayaks for rent...) I'm skilled, so I can paddle a tandem (2-person canoe) solo just fine, but a place that rents open solo canoes would be even better!
its confusing because the dutch use the word interchangeably in my experience. Even the website for the rental place at amsterdamse bos has pictures of kayaks with the word canoe.
Ive seen canoes at amsterdase bos, Sloterplas, and durgerdam.
Hey peeps, I’m looking to buy a tiffin, preferrably a steel one. Any ideas where I could purchase a quality one?
I tried the meesterlijpers in de kinkerstraat as well as the kitchen specialty store in de pijp next to spang makandra. Any other tips? Perhaps an Indian kitchen store?
My landlord/agency (I'm on the contract for many years) says they do not have any measurements of the apartment, but I could pay to have it measured. Note that ownership and agency managing the apartment has changed during the years.
Is this legit? Wouldn't it be their obligation to provide such document and shouldn't there be a legal document for the apartment?
I've been in the apartment for 5 years and tenancy changes, so in order to offer the extra room and check if the rent price could be busted I want the proper measurements.
But now, of course there is furniture, and I would need to get proper tools, making it quite the effort to get precise measurements myself
Just to bump - I checked and the size of the apartment doesn't add up, I'd guess it's around 90-100m2, plus balcony and terrace, and on the website it says 57m2
Looking for chill but delicious birthday dinner recommendations - I used to live here 2017-2020 and I’ve just moved back - want to have a really delicious dinner for my birthday in a few weeks - looking for something really tasty but not too fancy or pretentious. Maybe spending max €70 each on food and drinks as a rough guide. Any ideas? Could be a set menu or not… I’ll be trying to book a table of about 8 people in September. I’m thinking something like a Cafe Beurre or Pesca etc but want to try somewhere I haven’t been before. Could be less fancy than those two suggestions. Any ideas much appreciated!
Elderberries are in season, I've seen them all over the city. Does anyone know of stores or markets selling them? Alternatively, are there any spots where I would be allowed to pick them? Thank you!
APPLE PAY ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT - I’ve been tapping in and out of the bus / metro (I often take one after the other) with my phone. Why have I not been charged? I don’t get any notification from Apple Pay that my card has been charged (it always tells me when I tap), even days after the journey. When I check my bank account, I don’t see a charge either. Am I missing something here? And yes whenever I tap in and out the machine goes green and checks. Help me understand what’s going on 😅
On the last day of my trip to Amsterdam last year, I noticed a print in the window of a shop in the Jordaan called "Handmade Print." The shop was closed (it was a Sunday), and there are no hours posted on the shop or online.
I'm coming back next month. Normally I stay nearby and could just drop by a few times randomly, but I'm staying father away this time. Does anyone know anything about it like hours, or contact if by appointment, and so on? The address is Eerste Bloemdwarsstraat 10; it's a few doors down from Paradox Coffee Shop.
The shop/gallery isn't located there, on the door it says their address, it's Hartenstraat 30. They're supposed to be open thursday, saturday and sunday from 13 to 17:00. https://www.instagram.com/eddy_varekamp/
Thank you! I can’t believe I didn’t make the connection (I’ve passed by the gallery on Hartenstraat as well and follow them on Insta) … Last day of vacation brain I guess.
I noticed this moving ramp in Amsterdam central station was under maintenance yesterday and was thinking I have found it this way more often than not. After a long gap it works now and then and after a couple of days it breaks again. Are all moving ramps like this? Is it a case of bad engineering or are the pedestrians doing something to damage it?
Hello, does anyone know if there is an international moving or transportation company that can move stuff from Amsterdam to Canada. I have my stuff in storage and I am unable to get it, so I’m looking for a company to doesn’t mind taking my stuff from the storage and shipping them to Canada.
Resident here, how’s the ferry situation at central today? I’m arriving from a bike trip at around 7.30pm and need to head to noord. Bikes aren’t allowed on the metro till tomorrow and GVB says ferries are running albeit with delays.
Hey, I really hate crowds, but I want to visit the tall ships for SAIL. I'm thinking of walking down the Veemkade once everything finishes, around midnight. Is the Veemkade still accessible at this time, or do they close it off?
Is there enough light at this time to appreciate the boats? Will it actually be quiet around midnight or should I wait until 1am/2am?
Hi all! I’ve got a collection of comic books from the 1950s–70s in decent condition and I’m looking to sell them in Amsterdam.
Does anyone know:
Shops or dealers who buy vintage comics?
Collector communities or local auction options worth trying?
I know of Lambiek and Art of Comics, but not sure if they purchase collections. Would love tips on reliable places—or personal experiences selling in the city.
Could I possibly get some context for what the young men walking up and down the streets, chanting/singing, spitting fire, and jumping into the canal is about? I’m in town for Sail and am very confused. They seem to be having a good time though?
Last friday, I parked my swapbike on borgerstraat in a bike rack. Today, all bikes have been moved to the bike depot and yellow signs have suddenly emerged saying that would happen today. One problem: these signs weren't even there friday. I wouldn't have parked there otherwise.
Is this normal? Do I have any recourse before paying 20 euros + uber ride charge + whatever swapfiets wants from me?
Anyone in this community going to the hilltop hoods concert in Paradiso on Monday? Travelling from Australia at the moment and will be attending, will obviously meet people there but curious if anyone from this sub has tickets.
Do the trams/metros/etc accept iPhone Express Transit Card, whereas you just hold your phone to the reader without opening wallet or unlocking your phone?
Been loving my stay here so far and decided i want to buy some new shoes/pants/clothes etc. I want to shop like a local though and don’t want to buy luxury designer like dior or louis vuitton or stuff that i could easily find in america. What are some good stores where i can buy brands that are popular in the NL or even small independent brands? Thrifting also welcome and thank you!!!
I’m looking for a nice pair of loafers to ground my outfits. I don’t have any loafers. I really like these (link below) but am currently in the NL so thought it would be cool to buy some here lol
Not sure where you can get that specific brand but if you're open to trying a local alternative I'd suggest Filling Pieces. They're an Amsterdam founded clothing brand and have both basic leather loafers as well as loafers with cool details like embroidery. Otherwise I'd check out either Taft, Nelson or Manfield on Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk.
I'm planning to host a pop-up dining event for around 30-35 people and I'm looking for a space in Amsterdam that has both a dining area and a kitchen.
Most of the prep will be done off-site, but I'll need the kitchen for service (oven, stove, fridge, etc.).
I'm an ex-chef, so this is more of a passion project-selling tickets mainly to friends and family.
Does anyone know of any spaces you can rent at a reasonable price for something like this?
Thanks Amsterdam!
Any suggestions for war history, cemeteries or urban sketching?
Hello People,
I was searching on the Wiki and old posts, but only found one partially related post from 5 years ago with not many replies.
I'm going to Amsterdam in a few weeks, and I'm really interested in Cemeteries, and War History, apart from the obvious (like resistance museum, Anne Frank House), is any other war history related stuff to see? (This needs not to be limited to Second World War).
Also, is there any interesting Cemetery I could go to? Either historically or architectonic.
And a cheeky extra ask, is there anywhere you would recommend for urban sketching?
Thanks in Advance for any suggestion.
Also, is there any interesting Cemetery I could go to?
There is De Nieuwe Ooster in East with a lot of sculptures. There is also an old Jewish cemetery near Flevopark, but it's generally closed off except for sundays I think.
I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. I've lived here for a year and a half and I always have to call my GP office to fill my prescriptions at the pharmacy. I called them today and they are out until next week. But I need to refill some of my prescriptions this week. If I go to the pharmacy will they be allowed to give me a small amount? Or is there something else I should do?
Usually gp’s cover for each other during absence. Either on their website or frontdoor they have a list to which other gp you are assigned based on the first letter of your last name. You can contact that other gp.
As a somewhat recent immigrant struggling my way through the rental crisis, I find myself needing some dirt cheap meals with no/minimal cooking required as I’m subletting til i find something permanent. I dont own cooking supplies yet because Ive had to move 6x in the last 6 months and physically cannot move with anymore things than what I already own. As of right now my main go tos are “charcuterie plates”, precooked meats, ramen, potatoes, and cheap or discounted pastries from AH. Ive seen some older posts on this group about groceries but nothing updated. So im curious if anyone has some recommendations for no cook (microwave only) cheap meals. Would prefer to keep it at or under 3€ per meal. If so which grocery stores and items do you recommend? No hate please I’m going through a lot at the moment ❤️
Buldak noodles are good, available at most supermarkets. I'd also recommend getting some vegetables that you can eat raw from cheap Turkish grocery stores or markets, like celery and bell peppers.
I was visiting Amsterdam recently and noticed something a bit odd. I went to about six supermarkets in De Pijp (Jumbo, Albert Heijn, Aldi, etc.) to return some cans, but in every single one the return machines were marked as “out of service” or “broken.”
It felt statistically unlikely that all of them would be down at the same time, so I was wondering if this is intentional or just bad luck. Is there some policy or issue I’m not aware of?
Hi! So i ve recently moved to Amsterdam and went to buy tobacco from a store that I was told was selling it(I smoke virginia original). The order was around 27,50€ which was shocking since in my country it was like 11-12€ per 50g. I wanted to ask if these are the normal prices or if I just went to an overpriced store.
I have a trip to Europe planned for November, and one of the places I’ll be visiting is Amsterdam.
I’m considering booking either Hotel CC or Hotel Luxor, both located in the Red Light District. Since I’ll be traveling with my wife, I’d like to know if it’s safe to walk around there at night and if there are any important things I should be aware of about that area.
Thank you in advance!
I (M/24) travelled from Cologne to Amsterdam with my bike and stay Till thursday evening.
I Look for a Nice evening today, maybe a pub Quiz or something like that. Most of the Quizzes Need a Team and are Not for Solo people…
If you are interrested, you can answer or dm me, i would be happy to Drink a few Beers, Quiz and Talk together. Or anything Else, im Open to (almost) everything ;)
Hello guys!!
So its time for me to buy a motorcycle but im aware of that massive thievery thats going on with those vehicles.
I want to rent a garage or a safe parking spot but i really dont know how to search. Ive seen a couple of meh stuff at funda.
I also have seen some parking places for rent but they are closed after 12am.
Hi guys, I'm looking for spots for street photography. I'd like to avoid the more touristy neighborhoods and focus on neighborhoods frequented mainly by locals. I'd like to capture the daily life of Amsterdam's residents. I also really like the idea of shooting small markets, parks, and even architecturally interesting neighborhoods to get a nice backdrop.
Hi everyone.
Anyone on this Reddit that remembers Fat City Hostel from the 1970s ,I have found it on Google but the links are for FB which I do not have .
I would love to hear from people from 1972-1977 . I realise this is long shot but nothing lost nothing gained
Hi just moved to Amsterdam, was looking to get a bike. I eyed out one fixie, but the price, 600€, got me a bit worried about theft.. how often does bicycle theft occur and would a 600€ fixie get stolen? What could be some ways to prevent theft? Thanks for any suggestions :D
Hello lovely people of r/Amsterdam! I was visiting Amsterdam a few weeks ago and I just got to looking over my spendings. Does anybody here recognize the seller “91945361 Amsterdam”? I have no idea what this charge of 10 EURs could be. I am also not quite sure this is the right sub to post this on, but it’s worth a try. Cheers and thanks in advance :)
Hi everyone! I'm traveling to Amsterdam in a month from now and I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on some curiosities I have, also any suggestions on things to do. Im open for everything Amsterdam has to offer. One question I have is travel around, weather it be bike or Uber. I'm staying about an hour walk or 4 TO 5 KM west of the central station. Is there community bikes like limes or apps to use? Or are ubers cheap enough to go back and forth. Also the weather,it's October when I'm there so I assume a little chilly and some rain. Look forward to hearing from a local or someone who's experienced Amsterdam.
Any prostitutes for straight women? About how much would you expect for a bj vs a bj and sex? And are the men tested and regulated the same way as the women? Would obviously wear a condom still
I was in Amsterdam 3 weeks ago and this building with the purple banner was opposite my hotel, next to Vondelpark. Is this one of the student associations?
I’ll be in Amsterdam for about a week and was wondering if anyone can recommend a good gym with a daily pass. I don’t mind if it’s popular or busy, as long as it’s clean, has solid equipment and not crazy expensive
Depends what you consider remarkable. But the default pleb answer if you've never been in the Netherlands before and aren't a haute cuisine snob is to get a rijsttafel (with 2 people) at a good Indonesian restaurant such as Kantjil or Sampurna.
Tough one, meat is kind of out of fashion in Amsterdam. We have the Cannibale Royale restaurants that focus on meat but I haven't been there myself so I can't say how legit it is. Pendergast in Westerpark is also quite good, but that's some American BBQ style so not particularly special to the Netherlands.
Some of my most visited places around the center are Ramen-ya who have a quite strong and big tonkotsu ramen, Xi'an Delicious Foods who have quite authentic dry biang biang noodles (the hot oil noodles), The Pancake Bakery on Prinsengracht (they understand the spirit of Dutch pancakes well), Hap Hmm (the most authentic Dutch food experience you will get) and De Hapjeshoek (a simple and very good Surinamese place hidden in a metro station).
Salmuera. Great, but expensive. If you're into Brazilian food, Barraca in Hoofddorp offers all-you-can-eat barbecue for a fixed price. Well worth the trip
A long shot I know, but are there any bars in Amsterdam that play American football? I will be visiting on August 30th and my team (Ohio state, not assuming anyone cares but maybe important for context, this will be the biggest American football game playing at that time) plays that evening. Ajax is playing a game about 1.5 hours before so that to consider too.
Hi! Traveling with husband, in-laws and 12 y/o kid, we want to take a canal tour but the ones I've seen offer food/drink and seem to be geared towards adults which I know my kid is probably not gonna enjoy so much. Would you recommend the hop on-hop off instead?
What's wrong with the regular one-hour cheap canal tours such as Rederij Kooij? That should be perfectly fine. I guess they don't advertise on TikTok...
Visiting Amsterdam, seems I need a ticket to get the reduced price for P+R parkings. however, the place I am staying at does not have a ticketing office nearby and the automatons don't work(Rietlandpark).
Does this mean I have to first take a tram to central station in order to get a paper ticket? Seems like they made this deliberately convoluted to scam tourists out of money... on top of that I had to find this info on the website because it is not explained on the price information board at the entrance to the parking.
left yesterday, the only solution was to go to central station. didn't find any working ticketing machines nearby and no paper tickets sold on the tram.
Hi everyone, what are some good streets/neighbourhoods to shop for nice menswear in? And I don't mean H&M or Zara. 😄
I'll be staying in De Pijp primarily but I'm also visiting friends all over, so distance isn't really a factor.
Thanks!
My daughter has the chance to rent a nearly new apartment on Werfstraat in Amsterdam North for €1400 excl., living room, 2 bedrooms, view over the IJ.
It sounds almost too good to be true, so I’m a bit suspicious. What should she watch out for, and what’s the neighborhood like to live in?
I’m landing at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport soon and need to jump on some video calls right after arrival. I’m looking for quiet spots that are free, either inside the airport or very close by, where I won’t get distracted or have background noise.
You won’t find that in the area. If you have AirPods use voice isolation mode. I’ve used it in busy coffee shops and people on the call hear nothing but your voice.
If you follow the signs towards the Hilton and the World Trade Center (you don't have to go outdoors, it's up an escalator from the train station area of the airport), you'll find yourself in a long building full of businesses. There are some seating areas accessible to the public up one or two levels from the main corridor. It's as quiet as any corporate area.
The lobby of the Hilton is also an option. It's a large space and kind of eats sound.
Is Adnight worth it? I'm between jobs and looking for networking opportunities, at one of my old jobs we used to host open-doors during Adnight but I would always be too busy working the event to stop by other companies/agencies. I'm debating on wether or not I'm getting a ticket this year because I've missed a few editions so would like to know from someone that attended last year or 2023 if it's worth it or just another boozer in networking packaging (also I'm notoriously bad at networking but trying to get out of my comfortzone a bit more).
My significant other and I love weird/quirky/local gift shops. Does anyone have any recommendations for must check out gift shops? Both touristy and local/hidden gem recommendations are welcome :)
Hello! I have tickets for Sigur Ros in the Carré theater; the concert starts at 20 hrs. I wonder how much earlier I need to be? Does anyone know approximately at what time the doors usually open? Thanks!
I was staying at a hostel recently in Amsterdam. They have a no visitors policy everybody enters the building and to the rooms with cards or they ring the bell and reception lets them in. While I was out our room was broken into and also our lockers were physically broken and money I kept locked and hidden in my bag was stolen. Apparently, the other people we shared the room reported the situation earlier but hostel just gave them new locks. When I reported that my stuff was stolen they said that they were sorry but did no attempt to compensate even refund. I hardly got my return after a day.
They said that it's hard to keep track of who goes in to the building and to rooms but isn't that their responsibility? Locks were cut and the person who did that had resources and preparation for it and took advantage of the security breach of the hostel. Shouldn't they compensate for the damage, am I in the wrong for thinking so? Also do you know any place where I can make a complaint regarding the issue?
Flying to Amsterdam right now and forgot my phone charger (regular USB C charger). Any recommendations where I might buy one near Rembrandtplein just south of De Wallen?
Do supermarkets sell these in Amsterdam?
There's a Flying Tiger on Rembrandtplein where you could probably find them, a Kruidvat and a HEMA a few minutes down the road on Kalverstraat where you can usually also find chargers. Otherwise you can also try a souvenir shop but I think they'll probably be a bit more expensive than the first three stores I mentioned. Edit: you can also find them at the airport or otherwise in shops in Central Station (assuming you're taking the train from the airport into the city).
I'll be staying in Amsterdam for a week and go see other towns as well (Rotterdam, Haag, Gouda...). Is this better to go by public transport or rent a car? Which agency would you recomend for rent a car?
Me (31) and my husband (29) are thinking to move in Amsterdam next year (2026). I’m a senior packaging designer and illustrator with 8+ years of experience and he works in IT with 7 years of experience. We would like to move from Romania, because we reached a point where we would like to find an environment with a more open mentality. What are some things we should know before moving there? Any advices? Thank you so much in advance!
Hello!
I’ll be moving to Amsterdam in a week, and was looking for some places where I can have my packages delivered (ideally for free, but not necessarily).
I suppose Amazon has its pickup locations on the map, but I was wondering whether there were other places for other websites/services.
I live in Meer en Vaart, but I wouldn’t mind going some way towards the center, as I’ll be studying there in will eventually get there anyway.
Paris or Brussels or more of Netherlands? Got 4-5 days after work in NL
Solo Travelling to Amsterdam & Eindhoven from India for work.
Plan to explore Eindhoven and Amsterdam & Hague over 3-4 days.
Is that good enough?
Can afford to extend my trip by a couple of days to explore Paris or Brussels. Should I?
And are they doable in 2 days, combined?
Shall I just explore more of Netherlands instead, or maybe lesser days for NL & more outside?
First timer, so any other suggestions are really appreciated.
And sorry for posting a similar question again, but fairly confused and looking for opinions.
I would skip Eindhoven, not that much to see there. Trying to fit in Paris and Brussels in 2 days is not doable unless you want to be in a train full time. Also, there's nicer cities in Belgium than Brussles, I'd pick Antwerp or Ghent. I'd focus on one or two cities in NL during those 4 days, then maybe combine with 1 Belgian city if you extend your trip. If you truly want to explore a city, you'll need several days in a city.
Eindhoven is where I gotta go for work.
Can choose just Paris instead of Belgium too, if it's viable in 2 days.
Do the other Belgium cities you mentioned, also have the same good train connectivity?
I would love to move here to work/study. Would I find a full time job without university degree? I currently live in London and while we don't have housing crisis, there are no jobs, or everything is just few hours/week. I would appreciate advice as I'm now unsure if moving here is realistic.
Are you an Eu citizen? If not, you'd need either a work/residence permit or a student residence permit. Without highly specialized skills, you won't get a job offer that allows for a work/residence permit, and on a student permit, you'd be allowed to work a max of 16 hours per week and would need an additional work permit for those hours.
I am EU citizen so don't need visa, sorry forgot to mention in original comment. I know I can just choose another country if Netherlands isn't realistic option, but it is one of least homophobic in EU and has affordable university education
I work as Scientist and have 60k gross (+stuff that most of the agencies dont care about). I moved to Amsterdam in June and have a temporary rental contract organized by VU in Uilenstede. I need to leave my flat end of Nov and recently got an offer for a 74sqm flat in Bijlmer for 1650€. I dont need that much space and Bijmer isnt my place of choice because of its location (traveling Zuid and Nightlife) rather than the neighborhood. Of course, I'm actually looking for something cheaper closer to the center, but it is what it is now.
My main question is: Can I afford to keep looking or will I end up homeless? What would you do?
NSFW - How do flirting and hookups work here? I am a woman from the US. Twice, I went out to adult parties just wanting to play with no strings attached. I’m used to men approaching me, but the guys here don’t do that. They stare and say nothing. After a while of being stared at, I decided to start talking, and the guys were friendly and very interested in me. Is that how it normally goes? Are women expected to approach men?
I’m not complaining or anything; I genuinely want to understand the etiquette here.
For regular parties, the general stereotype does seem to be that Dutch men are less initiators than American (anglophone) and Latin men. I have no direct experience of any of this, but it is the partyline i hear from my women-friends.
In America, it would appear desperate for women to approach men at these kinds of events, so it’s hard for me to break that behavior here in Amsterdam. But goodness, I hung out at the bar with my tits and ass out for an hour and no one came by to say hi. Haha

CYCLING AMSTERDAM TO ROTTERDAM
I’m an American flying into Amsterdam for a few days, and I want to rent a cycle to bike down to Rotterdam where my friend lives. Is there a rental service where I can rent a cycle in Amsterdam and return it in Rotterdam?
Alternatively, any recommendations for good cycle rental shops that will rent out a basic bike for 3 days with a pannier rack that I can then return back to Amsterdam before flying out? Thank you guys!
