Question Weekly Q&A - All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)

This is the place for anyone to ask questions about Amsterdam. If you are a tourist visiting Amsterdam, you are moving to or recently arrived in Amsterdam, or you just have a basic question about life in Amsterdam and want some advice, this is the place to post your question. This post is refreshed every week on Sunday. Please feel free to repost in subsequent weeks.

READ THE WIKI FIRST. The people answering questions are locals who want to share the city they love with visitors, but only with people who make an effort. Read at least the Essential Tourist Information in our world-famous wiki before you ask a question. Otherwise, you may be told to go back and read it. The wiki is written by us, and updated when relevant. If the entries are old it's because nothing has changed. There are no "hidden gems" that we have not already included in the wiki. You may also check wikivoyage for more general tips on everything that is Amsterdam.

HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.

TOURISTS CAN PURCHASE MARIJUANA, DESPITE WHAT YOU READ IN FOREIGN PRESS. Understand that the coffeeshops are just a tiny part of Amsterdam, so posts that treat Amsterdam like it's the Las Vegas of drugs sometimes get a negative response. We're happy to give you advice about coffeeshops and to discuss drug policy. The experts are our friends at /r/AmsterdamEnts, ask them the big questions.

WE DON'T HELP WITH ILLEGAL STUFF AND WILL BAN YOU FOR ASKING. We will not help you with things that are clearly illegal. Coffeeshops caught selling to minors get shut down and everyone loses their jobs. Authorities check for people smuggling marijuana out of the country. Hard drugs are illegal and so is asking for or selling them on Reddit.

WE DON'T ALLOW TICKET SALES OR TRADING. We do not allow selling, buying, or trading tickets on /r/Amsterdam due to the high rate of fraud. You should do everything on ticketswap.nl. We're aware that is difficult to get tickets to Anne Frank, van Gogh, etc. We have no solutions for you, sorry.

RED LIGHT DISTRICT Please be respectful and keep in mind this is a citysubreddit, and not your personal kink google. You can also can get some good tips from these threads of RLD sex workers: here and here.

USE PUBLIC TRANSIT TO GET AROUND 9292.nl is a great resource for plotting your movement around the city and between Amsterdam and other places. We strongly recommend against using taxis or Ubers.

DOE AARDIG. There is Dutch directness and there is rudeness. The people coming here don't know how we do things, and are usually well-meaning people who just want to enjoy the city we love. Be kind to them. For the tourists and new residents, please remember that we are not Google; respect our time by doing some basic research first and then asking your questions like you're speaking to a real human who is volunteering to speak to you.

Here is what's on at the major venues this week.

I’m learning Dutch in Duolingo. It seems that the “n” at the end of Dutch words is either completely dropped or VERY subtle. Is this correct? Kinderen is pronounced more like “kindereh” and eten is pronounced more like “eteh.”

6

u/Juliusque Knows the Wiki 4d ago

The n is usually dropped, but it's never incorrect to pronounce it. People will often pronounce it when they're carefully articulating, or when it comes before a vowel. In "We hebben altijd gedaan wat we kunnen" you might pronounce the n in "hebben" and not in "kunnen". There are no rules about this, we do what's natural.

u/Beginning-Army-8738 4d ago

Depends on the location. Eastern dialects tend to drop the second 'e', pronouncing hebb'n.

2

u/crackanape Snorfietsers naar de grachten 4d ago

That is correct, at least around here. Maybe different in some dialects, or in really formal usage.

Anyone know where to buy packing accessories such as styrofoam, bubble wrap etc? I've tried my local Primera & Hema with no luck. I want to ship a PC tower within Europe without breaking all of the glass panels.

Praxis/Gamma would be my bet.

Maybe call up a large Kringloopwinkel too, like Rataplan or De Lokatie, maybe you could work out a deal with them.

Amazing, thanks so much for the suggestions!

The very best answer for over 100 years would be Paardenkoper, with locations near in and near Amsterdam.

BUT they were just declared bankrupt. HOWEVER, their website seems to indicate they are still open.

Maybe give them a call and see if someone answers?

Is there a place to learn how to play and play baseball as an adult beginner who is not aiming to become an actual athlete? I tried searching it, but all I get is sport clubs aimed primarily at young people under 17, and/or professional teams.

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for recommendations for some great nature spots in or around Amsterdam. I'd love to go for a walk and have a chance to spot all sorts of wildlife, from small creatures like salamanders to other animals.

Since I'm hoping to see them in a more natural setting, I'd like to avoid zoos like Artis.

Does anyone know of any nature reserves, parks, or ponds that are great for this? Any tips are welcome. Thanks so much in advance!

There is a national park between Haarlem and Zaandvort, thats probably your Best option near Amsterdam.

2

u/Zooz00 19h ago

Depends on what you consider around Amsterdam. Pretty much the whole Netherlands is in 2 hours reach and we have plenty of national parks. But yes, the closest/easiest access ones are Zuid-Kennemerland (and Waterleidingduinen) and the Utrechtse Heuvelrug.

You can also find smaller snippets of nature closer, like de Bretten, Geuzenbos, Diemer Vijfhoek, Diemerbos or Ilperveld.

Hi, it will be my first time visiting Amsterdam, and as a comic book fan I was wondering if there are any comic book stores or related things to check out in the city?

3

u/pala4833 Knows the Wiki 4d ago

Pretty frequent question. Answers haven't really changed over the years.

u/Juliusque Knows the Wiki 4d ago

Lambiek is the oldest comic book store in Europe (second oldest in the world), worth checking out.

There are more, comic books are pretty popular here. But it's good to know that "comics" in this country doesn't mean "superheroes". I don't know where you're from, but I know that in many countries a comic book store will be mostly full of superhero stuff. In a Dutch comic book store, the American comics you'll find will be mostly what would be considered alternative comics and graphic novels in the US.

Hey guys,

My 30-second recording of bikes and street sounds in Vondelpark got deleted, and I really need something similar for an episode of my podcast about Amsterdam.

I was there last month and loved the city, but now I’m stuck without the audio. If anyone in Amsterdam can quickly record some street or bike noise for me, I’d be super grateful!

Please DM me if you can help, and I’ll give you my email to send the file to.

Thanks in advance!

Is it easy for Nederlanders to fix a back wheel lekke band from a bike? I got one and since I've been a kid, I used to fix my bike flat tires, I thought I could do the same. How naive I was, when I encountered that now bikes have disk breaks and that gear mechanism in the wheel that I have no idea how to manipulate haha.

2

u/excessive-pooping 4d ago

It's very common to fix your own tires. The more fancy and new (electric) bikes might have a different system though, and perhaps they profit off the repairs as well.

1

u/Letossgm Live, Laugh, Lelylaan 4d ago

I found it impossible to remove the wheel in order to replace the internal tube. Is there a tutorial or something like that I could follow for next time?

I've already taken it to a bike shop. 23EU for internal tube replacement.

4

u/excessive-pooping 4d ago

You can youtube it, heres what i found on google: https://www.maxvandaag.nl/sessies/cursus/fiets-repareren/deel-3-achterband-vervangen/

If you just repair the inner tube, you can also do that without taking the whole wheel off.

1

u/bert1600 [Zuid] 4d ago

sounds like a decent price. Probably takes him half an hour or so.

2

u/Juliusque Knows the Wiki 4d ago

My parents taught me how to do it when I was a kid, but I feel like us millennials may have been the last generation to whom this skill was taught. Though I still have a little box with the necessary equipment somewhere, I usually just go to the repair shop.

1

u/Letossgm Live, Laugh, Lelylaan 4d ago

I'm millenial and I also used to change the internal tube with two table spoons hahaha. So, now when I tried to remove the back wheel, I found myself struggling to understand how to dissasemble the disk breaks and the gears system haha. Back in the days, it was only the chain. So, I just decided to pay for it hahaha.

What is the preferred "furniture taxi" service? I planned to rent a van for this week to collect various purchases for a new apartment, but now they've all fallen through except for one and I'd like to wait to do this. I still need to pick up a bed frame, however.

It is a disassembled bed frame. I could have sworn I saw many services advertising 50 euros for quick pick-ups and deliveries, which it will be. I just can't find them anymore. Thank you! I'm having no luck this week.

4

u/spaceguydudeman Knows the Wiki 4d ago edited 4d ago

If you still have the time to go pick it up, and depending on the size of the bed frame, Greenwheels van could be a very good option ( Use my link and we will both receive € 25 driving credit: https://www.greenwheels.nl/en-us/share?i=938169b662 ) and much less expensive than your average car rental (as you dont rent the entire day). Otherwise Brenger.

3

u/shibalore 4d ago

This made me hate myself for not having the international license card. I've tucked this away for future use! My license isn't recipricol with the Netherlands, but I have three citizenships, and the other two countries are reciprocal. I keep joking I need to go take a long vacation to exchange so that I can exchange again, and this is a bit of a motivation. Thanks for this!

1

u/spaceguydudeman Knows the Wiki 4d ago

No problem!

Just out of curiosity, how were you planning on renting a van if your drivers license isn't valid here?

2

u/shibalore 4d ago

My license is valid, it's just not among the ones accepted by the service you linked. They require an EU license or an international driver's license.

My non-EU license is valid for the first six months I live in the NL. I've been here a bit longer, but I had to deregister for awhile because I had trouble with housing. I moved back to my EU country, which borders the NL, and just made the mindnumbing commute for apartment viewings. I'm fairly certain that deregistration restarted my clock since I returned to my country, but rental car companies didn't ask. I figured I'd deal with it if something came up or happened.

u/shibalore 2d ago

If you are wondering, this is the fastest way to become the most popular person in Amsterdam.

It was totally ridiculous. The person I bought it off of was very worried about me, a 55kg woman, with this 30kg Baqme bike with another 60kg in bed frame. I had about 8km to bike.

I tipped over once in the beginnning and a bunch of people ran over to help me upright (very wholesome, because they certainly weren't concerned I was injured because it was a slow tip and only the bike went over). I had no issues after that.

However, EVERYONE who saw me cheered, shouted, fist pumped, thumbs upped me, or did some sort of gesture of support. It was hilarious. I had a part of the route with a very tight space and there was a gemeente truck doing their daily bike removal and they ran over to help me by, too, LOL. I had to take a ferry at one point and everyone there was all about it with a lot of positive support.

Wholesome experience. I slept twelve hours last night, lol, but worth it! 20 euro sure beats the 100 Brenger wanted :)

Hey there!

having lived in Amsterdam for 5+ years, I am thoroughly enjoying this beautiful city!

I have been looking in the past for a place where I can find classic men's trousers, (not perse bespoke. I can make the investment from time to time but don't want to invest in a full bespoke wardrobe yet).
So Ideally I am looking for a place with off-shelf items that I can browse (I don't like buying these online).
When I talk about trousers, I mean high-waisted, classic trousers, which are not skinny and maintain their own shape. Let me show you with a few pictures below.

If you have any suggestions, please let me know. Much appreciated! 🙏🏻

Question: when you’re on the tram…and you paid for a 24, 48, 72 Hour etc ticket. I get that you have to scan the QR code on the app upon entry of the tram but must one also scan out? I get that you have to if you pay with a bank card…but for the QR code in the app that one has bought a 3-5 day pass? Is it necessary?

No, it's not necessary with the QR code.

Heyy reddit,

I’m looking for a curly hair stylist in Amsterdam. My curls are around armpit length when curly, and I’d love to find someone who really understands curly hair and can shape it well.

I’ve looked around and most places I found charge around €90 just for a wash, cut, and diffuse, which feels a bit too much for me. I’d really prefer something more affordable.

So if you’re a curly-haired person and have a stylist you trust and is affordable , I’d love your recommendations!

Thankyou

Any help from people with frizz-prone and/or wavy hair? Recently moved here and my hair looks electrocuted all the time!! Whether I straighten it or leave it natural, always insane frizz. Why fight nature? No natural hair style should be considered unprofessional. If they call your natural hair unprofessional you can call them racist.

u/starvingacademic 19h ago

It’s not just my natural hair though… I have soft curly hair but never this much frizz that makes me look electrocuted. Even when I straighten my hair the frizz on the top of my head is very visible :(. Like this > /img/95itrt6a6qo91.jpg

Invest in a good shampoo and conditioner. (No 'sulfaten' as we call them here, they're terrible for hair). I'm currently using Monday but any shampoo without sulfaten (no Andrelon for example) would do.

Don't dry off your hair with a towel, but either blowdry it or (and this would be my preferred way) let it dry naturally, at most tap it with your towel to get it a little dryer if you're in a hurry, but make sure you don't brush your hair with the towel.

Get a decent hairbrush and brush your hair into model when it's still wet.

Don't wash your hair every day. I shampoo + conditioner maybe once a week, and wash it with water maybe 2-3 times a week. Overwashing your hair is terrible for your hair, need some of those natural oils in there.

If all of the above still doesn't produce proper results, go to a hair dresser and ask if they can remove the 'dode puntjes' from your hair, then keep the same routine.

Hope all of it helps!

I have a layover at AMS for a little over 4 hours. Is it worth it to go through passport control for a visa stamp, take the triangle to the city center (20 mins?), and spend an hour or so and grab a breakfast (will be 8-9 AM)?

I'm assuming leaving 2 hours to get back to the airport for security and immigrations is enough?

2

u/crackanape Snorfietsers naar de grachten 3d ago

You can do it, you won't have a whole lot of time. If you have a non-EU/EEA passport and you have to do inbound passport control because you're arriving from outside Schengen, sometimes that takes a while (15-45 minutes).

If you prefer to be on the move rather than sitting around, and you are prepared to hustle through the airport if necessary, then it's definitely an option. You'd have enough time to take a few pictures and grab a quick bite around Centraal Station.

take the triangle to the city center (20 mins?)

Yeah, the triangle takes 15-18 minutes depending on which one you get. They go quite frequently.

I'm assuming leaving 2 hours to get back to the airport for security and immigrations is enough?

If you are flying onward to a destination in the Schengen Area then 2 hours is way more than you need. I don't leave my house more than 90 minutes before a Schengen flight unless it's peak school holiday time.

Has anyone been to see bands at the Upstairs (UP) venue at Melkweg? It seems that there's only one band listed, typically, at any given show (I'm used to there being an opener or two plus the headliner, even at small venues).

Some googling tells me that there aren't always support acts--is that accurate? And if so, and there's only one band scheduled for the night, how long do they play? I can't imagine an indie rock act with one album out is going to cover a 3-hour set, but who knows!

FWIW I'm interested in the Teenage Dads show on 20 Sept. and the old head in me is excited at the prospect of seeing one band and calling it a night (i.e., riding around).

3

u/dullestfranchise Amsterdammer 1d ago

Opened the melkweg website and it says:

Support: Honey I'm Home

So there's at least one support act.

If the date gets nearer they'll put up a timetable, sometimes there's another support act

Trying to choose between two hotels:

  • Chasse hotel residency (Oost)
  • Hotel Heye 130 (Amsterdam West)

What area would you recommend with a young family? Thanks!

2

u/crackanape Snorfietsers naar de grachten 4d ago

I don't know what it's like inside the Heye 130 but the area is quite nice.

It's very convenient for getting around (20 minutes to the airport by public transit, easily walkable to the city centre), and it's near a very large park (Vondelpark) which has plenty for kids to do, especially if you're here on Kings Day, when the entire park basically transforms into an empire run by local children. There are supermarkets and restaurants within a few minutes' walking distance as well.

1

u/IncaThink 5d ago

Chasse hotel residency (Oost)- Looks to be more luxurious but isn't as close to the city as you might like.

Hotel Heye 130 (Amsterdam West)- More of a working class neighborhood, but to me that's more attractive. That street is cool.

Hard to know what you are looking for though.

1

u/Flashy-Chemistry-609 5d ago

We're only there for four days, just looking for somewhere close to public transport but also some parks etc nearby to get the kids energy out. We'll also be there for king's day so somewhere that will be more family friendly for that.

4

u/IncaThink 5d ago

As mentioned, the hotel in the west is quite close to Vondelpark, which is kid central for Koningsdag. Although that other festival looks lovely.

But I think the Hotel Heye 130 is better located for public transport. Tram 17 will be all you will need to know.

And ignore the downvotes. There are a lot of gatekeepers here who think any discussion of hotels isn't welcome. They really go out of their way to make this sub more unfriendly and less useful. This is exactly where (All Questions Go Here (Especially Tourists)) a discussion like this should take place.

Not everything is in the FAQ. So FA-Q to the haters.

3

u/Flashy-Chemistry-609 5d ago

Thank you, I really appreciate your help and for the downvote explanation, I was very confused!

2

u/PQ_ Moord-en-brand-buurt 5d ago

Both locations are great for King's day with children. Next to the hotel in Oost is the Bredewegfestival: A children's festival with theatre and music. And the hotel in West is next to Vondelpark which will transform into a big flea market run by children.

u/crackanape Snorfietsers naar de grachten 4d ago

Hotel Heye 130 (Amsterdam West)- More of a working class neighborhood

These days the area south of the Jacob van Lennepkade is one of the priciest parts of the city. It's gentrified a lot in the past couple decades.

That street is cool.

However, yes, I agree that it's a good street to stay on to get an experience of what Amsterdam is like. Almost all local shops/restaurants instead of chains, quite culturally diverse cuisine, hip without being overbearing, and lively without being loud.

u/IncaThink 4d ago

Is anyone aware of some kind of service in Amsterdam where I can, for example, give them a stack of documents to organize, submit reimbursement forms, and maybe reply to emails for me?

Bonus points if they're geared towards "expats"/immigrants and/or people with ADHD. I know there's always gig work apps and virtual assistants, but I'd prefer a reputable, local company.

Double bonus points if they're budget friendly, but I know beggars can't be too choosy :)

You're after a Personal Assistant, and those are not budget friendly. Sometimes my friends and I (most of whom have ADHD) schedule a hangout where we sit there and make the others do the things we've been avoiding.

Last week I sat on my friend's bed and watched her declutter her closet and take it to the textile recycling.

a few weeks ago my neighbour came by and watched me repot plants.

You might want to look into something like a Virtual Assistant :)

We’re in Amsterdam with a baby, we’re planning to use RTF (ready to feed, i.e. pre-mixed) formula.

We brought some but thought we’d be able to buy some here, but all the supermarkets and pharmacies we checked yesterday only had powder (which, without a kettle to boil water or a fridge to store what we make, doesn’t seem a good option).

Does anyone know of where in Amsterdam we can go to buy ready to feed formula? Ideally larger (200-250ml) bottles in a larger case (18-24 pack).

7

u/Detective_J_Kimble 3d ago

Resident and father of 2. Haven’t seen pre mixed formula here, but haven't been looking for it.

What I do if I travel trough the city is I bring powder and a bottle of room temp water and an empty feeding bottle. Then either 1) buy a cup of tea anywhere, and use the hot water (about 1/4) with room temp bottled water (about 3/4) to mix a bottle on the spot or 2) ask at a restaurant/bar if they have a microwave to heat up a bottle of water and then mix formula. Never had a rejection if they had a microwave and it wasnt rush hour. Some small albert heijn supermarkets also have a microwave you can use yourself. Good luck!

2

u/xJJ- 3d ago

Great, thanks! We did buy the powder today

6

u/nagellak 3d ago

I don't think that's really a thing here, unfortunately. I've never seen liquid baby formula, just the powder.

Are you in a hotel? Can they help you with this? I'm thinking they must get requests like this more often.

2

u/xJJ- 3d ago

Seems like we just have to go with powder. Thanks!

3

u/nagellak 2d ago

Tap water is super safe here, so maybe an electronic bottle warmer would be an option instead of a kettle? Good luck, hope you’ll still have a good time here with the fam! x

3

u/Kerwinkle Knows the Wiki 2d ago

We and our friends have only used powdered formula here. The tap water is safe, but if it helps you feel better you can always use bottled water. With the amount of things kids put in their wouth all the time, sterilizing water was the least of our worries. As they say here, it strengthens their immune system.

Hi there, I’m from Ireland and I’m staying in Amsterdam for a few days, I was thinking of going to the match versus Poland on Thursday and was wondering is anybody going by car that would be able to offer a lift 😅🙏🏼

u/Beginning-Army-8738 2d ago

Probably nobody will go by car to Rotterdam. The train runs 24/7 and is way faster

I have tickets for the Van Gogh Museum on Saturday, but I reserved them with the Museumkaart rate, and I didn’t realize until now that it may not be straightforward to get the pass itself. I’m struggling to find clear info on this, does anyone know if I can pick up the pass at the Van Gogh Museum? And if so, is there a long enough line that it might be easier to pick it up from another museum on the way?

3

u/Zooz00 19h ago

It's easiest to get from the relatively unpopular museums that have it. I think I got mine in the Nieuwe Kerk a few times, no wait at all and it's on Dam Square.

Here's a link to places that sell it, which are a ton: https://www.museum.nl/nl/zien-en-doen/musea?mv-Facilities=SellsMuseumCard&mv-PageIndex=0&mv-Province=Noord-Holland

Eye seems like another good one to easily buy it at, right across the water from the central station.

2

u/T-Altmeyer Amsterdammer 23h ago

Will be easier to get them at Stedelijk Museum next door. Don't even know if Van Gogh sells them as you can't buy tickets at the door.

2

u/PQ_ Moord-en-brand-buurt 21h ago

It's also sold at the van Gogh museum according the Museumkaart website: https://i.imgur.com/EviXSX8.png

Just FYI the museum kaart is only for nationals. Not sure if you're a tourist.

Food help, I’m in Amsterdam for a week with my girlfriend and we’re about to be 3 year’s toghether…do you know a nice place where we can eat nice food in a more fine dining style but without Michelin restaurants, my budget is around 250/300 for both( better if with wine already) and we have no formal clothes, just hoodie and jeans or hoodie and some cargo

2

u/HhhHhm [West] - Westerpark 23h ago

REM (cool location, cool views, might be hard to get to depending on where you're staying)

Senses (More on the fancy side)

Bistrot Neuf (Near Central Station, more down to earth vibe but with fancy food)

Hi, is anyone driving from Amsterdam to Draaimolen?

-3

u/Designer_Draw4184 1d ago

Hi! traveling to Amsterdam for a couple of nights in October. Currently booked at the College Hotel (points) but having 2nd thoughts so wanted to check here for thoughts on hotel, location, etc. as a solo traveler with only 48 hours to visit, etc. I see some other similar category options - like The Dylan, Jan Luyken, The Craftsmen, Pulitzer, Mr Jordan, etc. ideally looking for boutique but with great amenities. Thoughts?

2

u/lil_bearr 17h ago

I’ve stayed at Pulitzer and absolutely loved it. Would definitely stay there again next time

I got last minute tickets to Amsterdam this weekend and I’m woefully ignorant of where I should stay and what I should do.

I love walking in the city and museums and such, and love trying local restaurants and cuisines.

What area should I be looking to stay in for a decent price and how readily available and safe is public transportation ?

From the OP:

HOTELS ARE EXPENSIVE AND WE DON'T HAVE GOOD ADVICE ON THEM. Because we live here, we don't know what the best hotels are. Amsterdam is one of the most touristed cities in the world and has the highest hotel prices in Europe and prices go up every year. The city is deliberately trying to reduce tourism by raising the prices. There really isn't a secret "cheap" solution. Most "Airport" hotels are not connected to the Airport and will be more trouble getting to than it's worth.

how readily available and safe is public transportation

Very. Look up all your itineraries at https://9292.nl/en/

I love walking in the city and museums and such, and love trying local restaurants and cuisines.

The Wiki, linked to in the OP, has all our advice. Take into account that for several museums- definitely Van Gogh and Anne Frank huis- you need to buy tickets online and they're likely to sell out.

My niece is moving from Alabama to Amsterdam because of politics here in the USA and because Amsterdam is more tolerant. I am not sure it’s the best choice because of Geert Wilders. How decisively are things shifting right there? Is he really the Dutch Trump?

6

u/Juliusque Knows the Wiki 20h ago

He's about as despicable as Trump, but because of our political system he will never be that powerful. His party is the largest, which means they got about 20% of the votes. He has to collaborate with other parties. Even in the extremely unlikely event of any party winning an election with more than half the votes, that party's leader would not have the power of a president. And even though we currently have the most right wing government in decades, we're still kept afloat by the more left wing practices we inherited.

And Amsterdam is one of the most left leaning cities in the world. It's far from perfect, but I don't know if there's anywhere better.

5

u/LockStockNL Centrum 1d ago

While a lot can be said about our politics it is nowhere near the absolute and utter shit show that is American politics. If your niece can figure out how to get a residence permit it should be a far more relaxing place to live.

0

u/GuntherRowe 1d ago

Thx. And it is a shit show here. Absolutely awful. I’m just not convinced there’s anywhere to run to that’s truly safe. I would expect it to be better there and I hope it stays that way.

Is it normal for people to not tag/pay for the metro? I’ve seen loads of people (probably not tourists) just punch one card and a bunch of people enter with that.

4

u/crackanape Snorfietsers naar de grachten 3d ago

It is kind of normal in every city that some people don't pay for public transit. Everyone gets to decide what kind of person they want to be.

0

u/spaceguydudeman Knows the Wiki 4d ago

what do you think?

you're obviously not supposed to do that, and they would 100% get a fine if they get checked.

i've only been checked twice in the metro my entire life though, so plenty of people do 'zwartrijden', either to save money (go ride a bike instead you lazy ass) or because they think they're cooler if they don't (hint: its not cool), and want to impress their shithead friends.

these kinds of people typically think following societal rules makes you a pussy, and going against the grain 'makes you a man'. they see being obnoxious as a win, because that gets them 'street credit' with their scummy friends. Same reason you see little groups of these 'bontkraagjes' on the street spewing homophobic shit at passer-by's, swearing at people, or spitting on people from their fatbikes.

some metro stations leave the gates open intentionally because these 'people' (dickheads is more apt) just punch through the gates otherwise.

Looking for housing 3-6 october and the prices are so insane man, rooms on a boat for 100$? Or hotels only next to airport, how good is the public transport late at evening/night? Is it dangerous to only live so far from the city centre?
