Hallo allemaal,

What can be done about this guy that bothers people on the metro

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

This man and his accomplice are often riding the metro in Amsterdam on different lines. They wait until the doors close before preaching loudly and aggressively to everyone on the train. They accuse people of various things and tell passengers they must choose between hell and their version of heaven, based on their lifestyles.

He then goes into ramblings about women, their role in the household, misogyny, homophobia, and similar topics. He is immediately defensive. If anyone gets close, suggests that he leaves, or gently puts a hand on his shoulder to ask him to stop, he reacts aggressively with “don’t touch me” and escalates. There is no reasoning with him; he only gets louder and more aggressive.

What can we do about this man? His behavior feels borderline abusive to people ride the metro.

Am I a hater?

Hi everyone,

I live in Amsterdam and have a well-paid job, but lately I’ve been feeling a lack of accomplishment. I work in ecommerce, and honestly, it often feels like there’s nothing deeper behind it—even though the company loudly claims that X is our mission.

My colleagues often feel robotic: hardly anyone seems interested in anything beyond work, and the only things that seem to “excite” them are work-related (I’m quoting them from meetings here).

I just want to know if anyone else feels like this, or if I’m just an outsider. Sure, I pay my bills and have a comfortable life, but it’s so hard to genuinely get excited about selling stuff on the internet.

How to talk to a homeless person (serious)

Hey all,

Pardon the generic title. Didn't know how else to capture the context.

I've been encountering (who I think is) a homeless person sitting by the side of the pavement next to my office for the past few months.

He asked me for change only once when he initially started sitting in his now usual spot, and after I said I don't carry cash on me (which is true), didn't ask me again since.

As he's sitting at the same spot pretty much every day, we've gotten used to seeing each other in the mornings and recently have been exchanging smiles and "good mornings", in English. I don't think he's Dutch.

Other than sitting on the side of the pavement, I have never seen him bother people. I've encountered a few other homeless people in the area and he is very different from them. His clothes don't seem (very) worn down, and I notice his beard is generally trimmed. He doesn't have bad body-odor (or at least not nearly to the extent of other homeless people), and he doesn't collect trash/bottles/cans either. He just sits in his spot.

He seems fairly young; I'd guess mid to late 20s.

The more I pass by the more I feel for the guy, and the more I'm inclined to talk to him.

I don't think my safety would be an issue if I talk to him, but if I do, I'd like to know what options he may have to improve his situation. Maybe he doesn't have a phone or internet access, and/or doesn't know what services are available to improve his situation.

Calling the police seems a bit overly excessive, as like I said, he doesn't really bother people at all. And I fear it might put him in a worse position.

Does anyone know what I can do here?

This isn’t about getting rid of him. He strikes me as someone that would be able to hold a job and improve his life. So I’d like to know if there’s anything I can provide him with, like information or contact with the right people, so that he would have the opportunity to do that.

I'd like serious, empathic responses please. This is a human being that I've seen to be respectful to others and his surroundings.

Received unexpected new bill months after medical visit

Tl;dr: Received an additional medical bill long after consultation/testing was complete and insurance plan expired, after being reassured that I wouldn't. Is this common? What are my options (legal, regulatory, etc.?)

I am a non-Dutch person who graduated from a Dutch university recently. While I was a student there, I was covered by health insurance from my home country. This expired once I graduated. I am back in my home country now.

While living in Amsterdam, in January 2025, I went to a GP for some recurring pains, who then referred me to a specialist. The specialist clinic required I pay an advance invoice (close to €1000) to secure my appointment, which I did. At the clinic, the specialist doctor suggested I do a blood test and some medical scans. I was hesitant at first, since I was unsure if these would be additional costs, but the specialist reassured me that the costs would be covered in the advance payment I made, and I double-checked this with the receptionist as well. (Sidenote: These additional tests yielded no new information, and the specialist essentially said "we don't know what's wrong ¯_(ツ)_/¯" so I still have these pains. I was not prescribed any medicines or treatment/pain management.)

After that, I had claimed and received the reimbursements for the GP and specialist appointments from my now ex-insurer, including that hefty ~€1000 payment. (Another relevant piece of context: the insurance company required that I submit claims within 15 days of payment i.e. even if I still had that insurance, the claim period has also long expired.) So, that chapter closed in January - or so I thought.

Fast forward to now (September 2025), and I receive an email from the specialist saying that the advance payment did not encompass everything, and that I owe them another ~€400. This is unusual for me because for the reasons that I stated: (a) I've never heard of new (non-itemized) medical bills taking EIGHT MONTHS to be discovered, (b) at the time of making the advance payment, there was no mention of whether I would have to pay more (if my tests and consultation cost less than €1000, would they have reimbursed me?!) (c) the specialist and receptionist reassured me that I would not have to pay more, and frankly if they had told me otherwise, I would've just sought out a doctor in my home country, (d) both the insurance reimbursement claim period, as well as the insurance itself, has expired, after I received a reimbursement already, (e) this wasn't a case of a prolonged treatment plan with multiple follow-ups: everything from my first GP approach to my post-scans follow-up call wrapped up by January, and neither me nor my insurance company had any reason to believe we would receive new bills months later. The insurance company is super anal tbh and they're unlikely to accept the new claim without a huge fight, if at all.

I guess my questions are, 1. Do I have any form of recourse so that I don't have to pay out-of-pocket, after being misled into believing I wouldn't receive further bills? 2. Is it a common experience in the Netherlands to receive further medical bills so many months after consultations and tests are complete? Surely this creates unnecessary legal and financial challenges, not just for non-Dutch students with insurance plans that have stricter timelines, but also for Dutch people covered by national healthcare?

[FOR THE MODS: The weekly Q&A thread didn't seem appropriate for a lengthy, context-heavy question like this, and I exercised my discretion accordingly. Apologies if that was not the right decision.]

Some kind of francophilie in Amsterdam?

Is it just me or has there been a noticeable rise in 'French' (inspired) cafés, restaurants and general style (espcially in horeca) the last 5 or so years in Amsterdam?

Also it seems like I hear more French on the streets (tourists I suppose, so a different topic really, but still)

GP recommendations in Noord?

Hello, I recently move to Amsterdam Noord and me and my gf are both looking for a GP.

I was told to NOT get Huisarten praktijk de haas zwart vm as GP, and that asking the insurance usually end up getting you a shitty GP. So far this is all the recommendation we got.

I know it's a tough market for GPs nowadays because there is a shortage, but if anyone in the Noord area has any specific feedback or tip, that would be very helpful.

English speaking is preferred since we are still learning, but we won't be picky on that. Thanks in advance, any feedback is welcome 🤗

[For the mods: I tried to put it in the Q&A section but I failed, apologies]

What's up with the explosions at Pizzabakkers on Plantage Kerklaan?

It usually seems to be some sort of drugs or other organised crime thing going on when a business gets blown up. But a Pizzabakkers? What's that all about? As usual, AT5 knows nothing... any decent theories out there? 🤔

Franse 🇫🇷taalcursus in Amsterdam

Hi all,

Dank alvast

taalcursus Frans in Amsterdam, graag tips!
