Question What's the deal with Daemons in AOS?

I'll be honest, daemons in Fantasy and 40k have always confused me. Sometimes they've got personalities and appear "all knowing," sometimes they're just horrible masses of limbs and mouths that appear to wreck havoc. I understand that they're creatures of chaos and are created by emotions (or the Chaos Gods), but I never understood how much agency and individuality they really could have. (I guess that answer is "depends on the whim of their God")

And then with AOS, the Mortal Realms are pure magic, and so daemons have a lot more freedom. They don't need the usual rituals or sacrifices to maintain their physical forms, unlike the other settings.

But how do they interact with others? Do daemons lead bans of mortal followers? Can daemons establish their own dominions? Rise up the ranks and assume power? It looks like the Maggotkin tend to have a lot of daemon units, so I assume they've interact more with humans than they would in the Old World

It’s very dependent on the type of daemon and the god they follow. Generally speaking more powerful daemons will have more of a personality. Theres no single answer, just trends.

You’re right in thinking daemons of Nurgle work alongside mortals a lot. Nurgle’s daemons are very structured, cycles and stagnation are within his purview, and so even his lowest level daemons are doing stuff like keeping tally of slain foes. Very powerful daemons of Nurgle might even have their own mortal followers independent of the broader worship. Rotigus attracts worshipers as a bringer of life.

Khorne’s daemons are generally the most straight forward. Khorne, famously, cares not from whence the blood flows and so his most powerful daemons are usually just better at slaughter, not necessarily big planners.

Slaanesh loves an experience but rarely cares about outcome. Their daemons are similarly driven, and will concoct elaborate setups to enjoy the resulting circumstance. Sometimes that involves collaborating with mortals, sometimes it doesn’t. Just depends on the party.

Tzeentch is fun because even their daemon’s intentional plans are often indistinguishable from nonsense. At the higher end that gives you master strategists like Kairos and at the lower end it gets you something like horrors, barely sentient gibbering masses of limbs. (Or the Changeling there in the middle, who loves a prank so much he’ll often disguise himself as the same person for a decade just to land the bit.)

Man I would love to see some sort of tzeentch-esque khorne demon or similar behavior out of an existing one. Just killing everything that moves is a great way to get blood flowing but a demon realizing that they can get way more blood by orchestrating conflict between the mortal races would be fun as a different angle for khorne’s minions. Maybe something like that exists already though but I’ve never seen anything like it.

There are empires created by Daemons, yeah. There was the Claim of Lord Zaronax in the Great Parch, the Claim of Syll'Esske in Hysh, a few nations in the Everspring Swathe like the Plaguespire and those on Invidia.

Mausolea ruled by Daemon Prince Graunos in "Neferata: Dominion of Bone". Be'lakor has a capital hidden in a lake in Ulgu.

I think in "Nagash the Undying King" there was an army of both Nurgle daemons and Nurgle mortals, and the mortals were getting annoyed because the daemons wanted to keep pressing forward. The mortals wanted to pause, dig in, and build fortifications, but the daemons didn't care about long-term plans. So in some ways daemons and mortals have very different outlooks even if the daemons have personalities and intelligence.

It depends on the whims of the writers, u won’t get any good chaos demon stories because its not allowed their only their to make the order cu**s look cool in 40k “supreme buttbuddy Dante fighting Clifford the stupid red dog angron and was beating his ass until someone eles comes and kills him but hell be back for another beating that’s all that matters as long as the order character looks cool we don’t have to give any thought to chaos whatsoever same thing for characters like skulltaker, kairos etc etc

Skulltakers origin story is one of the coolest most badass things i’ve ever read in fantasy, now ask me if he’s done anything else in the 50 years since then smfh.

That’s exactly why warhammer Aos and fantasy didn’t take off people come in look around see its shallow and quit no no has 8 years to wait for their faction to get. Shitty up date and no books or one book in ten years, “giving the people what they want” is exactly why warhammer fantasy died “the old world” and why aos will die, too much eggs in one basket.

What kind of question is that? Oh you disagree with how the multi million dollar company runs one of your favorite franchises, so why are you in the online community why do you voice your opinion just accept what is given and shut up, that’s your argument, the if you don’t like it don’t watch argument, keep licking the boot i guess idk what to tell you,

i’m here because i enjoy the universe of warhammer old world and aos, but I heavily disagree with the direction and decisions being made.

What kind of question is that?

One born of the fact that you're an uncommon voice in the chorus and your immediate instinct was to assume the person who asked you that was a bootlicker.

Rather than taking the time to consider that in context it looks like you came into the discussion only to be hostile.

Oh you disagree with how the multi million dollar company runs one of your favorite franchises

If you are a regular then you know folk here aren't afraid to rail against GW pretty regularly, you could make posts about it if you want.

Just talking from a mod perspective the way you came off in this comment chain was suspicious enough I checked through your comment history to make sure you have commented here before without fight energy going. You have. So no harm done.

But the way you came off in this thread was meaner and more belligerent than I think you meant it. So I want to instead encourage you to make a post talking about your frustration over how Chaos is treated.

A good chat with folk might help you hash out some of that frustration, talk with other folk about the parts you like, and who knows maybe other folks know some highlights you might have missed.

here because i enjoy the universe of warhammer old world and aos

After all if this is true. Then getting to enjoy it with more folk is better, yeah?

Fantasy did take off. It made the company.

AoS revitalized the setting and has been getting more popular every year.
