A lot of gaps for me to fill in in my soulbound campaign. Why’s Ulric dead?

End times lore: Teclis stole the silver flame from Middenhiem to revive Tyrion thus robbing of his major power source and the rest of his power he use to power a character name Martak who at the time was the head of the college of magic

Martak dies to archaon later on

Canonically? Per White Dwarf August 2024's Ask Grombrindal section its because not enough mortals in the Realms believe in him enough to revive the spark that remains.

That’s a shame. I feel like there’s lots of cool stories to be told with these characters in the mortal realms, especially since they’re supposed to be infinite.

Could be. But also not necessarily. The Gods of the Empire were largely filling niches and beliefs of that nation and its neighbors fitting the situations and beliefs of those people.

Ulric a God of War, Wolves, and Winter has a bit of a challenge to be relevant when Hammerhal, the main City of Sigmar, is half in a desert and half in a forested mountain range. Neither are known to experience winter and wolves don't abound. While for war they have Sigmar, Tyrion, Grimnir, and many more gods.

Infinite the Realms may be but there are focal points and centers of culture and religion for the factions at large. This isn't to say these gods never find a place. Prince of Cats and the Trickster-God of Cats, two minor gods venerated in Shyish, might be Ranald who is known to go by many names. Manaan may be dead but his Elven counterpart Mathlann is the central god of the Idoneth.

And mind you Ulric just needs worship to kick up somewhere to make a return. The City of Sigmar known as Izalend is a wintry land with wolves about. Perhaps one day he will be revived there?

The infinite is also a reason the old gods aren't mentioned must it must be said. The Realms are large, there's thousands of gods alive and dead. Over a hundred named or detailed thus far. Many of the lesser ones getting a decent amount of lore.

So as a result they don't always need to bring back an old god to fit a niche. Though this said in the past few years Morai-Heg has returned, Morrda gained importance (highly implied to be Morr), and Gazul and Valaya and Hashut are all thrown into the limelight. Several shards of Elf Gods were freed from Slaanesh which and where they went unknown. So the old gods of Humans, Elves, and Dwarves aren't gone. Many are out there waiting to make a move.

Does that mean that the old elven gods could now be revived if enough people believe in them to empower the freed shards?

That was Teclis’ original intentions with the Idoneth, before it was discovered their soul-sickness meant their worship provided nothing, and is basically what happened with Morai-Heg etc.

It’s kind of messy, though, given they’ve always been cyclical in a way the old elves didn’t understand, their portfolios transferring to new inheritors. Could you bring back isha with worship, even though Alarielle inherited her power and position? Could you bring back Kurnous, even though he was split apart and his best pieces used to grow Kurnoth, who himself is a flicker of divinity kept alive only by his worshippers?

In the Mortal Realms, belief and faith coalesce into energy which creates afterlifes and empowers gods. Many mortal beings become Ascended Gods because people believe they are.

Other fun lore bits with Morrda is that Nagash 'claims' in the book Soul Wars that he has devoured all of the other death gods and he alone remains as the sole diety of death. However in the same book it talks about how there are still death gods around laying low from Nagash.

the word implied is going to do some lifting cause they don't outright say it

Ulric: Dead killed by Teclis and not mention

Taal: Worshipped in Ghur but status of his existence is unknown

Rhya: Never mention

Morr: "died" in the end times but is heavily implied to return as Morrda the god of death, oblivion and patron to the city of Lethis the city of ravens that challenges Nagash for souls. He also empowers the Stormcast of the Ruination chamber as worshipped in the grave gardens along with the raven priest that seek to challenge undead

Verena: Never mention

Shallya: ok so strap in. End times she was revealed to be Poxfulcrum the enslaved taste tester of nurgle plagues (the fantasy Isha if you know 40k lore) and there was a whole bit in the end times of saving her from the cage. Well in AOS Poxfulcrum is back in the cage of nurgle and implied to still be Shallya since they call her "possbily a rival god Nurgle sought to undo" so .........again implied

Myrmidia: it implied to be the goddess Mirmidh a warrior goddess of rulership and war strategy. Wildly worship by the Stormcast legions of the Tempest lords. a goddess of teachings in war, diplomacy, and rulership she also refer to be the Spear Saint...so again implied

Ranald: Worshiped but status of his existence is unknown

Manann: well .....that kind of goes into the whole Manann = Mathlann? debate if you believe that true than Slaanesh has killed him along with all the other Asur (with the possibility of his return with the Asur foretold) if not he never mention

While it is unclear if Manann or Mathlann are the same, it was confirmed in "White Dwarf March April 2020" that Manann was consumed in the World-That-Was.

did that WD mention anything else with the TOW gods? or just Manann

Just Manann. It was Phil Kelly specifically answering a question about the fate of Manann.
