Day out with the family at Belsay Hall. The site is managed by English Heritage, and holds not only the nineteenth century hall, but the ruins of a 500 year old castle, in addition to some spectacular gardens.

Discussion The hypocrisy of MANY people

Today many people see building in old styles as kitsch and rebuilding old buildings as unnecessary because “it’s already gone” or “the new buildings are also history” but then they go to Italy, France or any other old city and view it as so romantical and beautiful then for example choose these places to have wonderful moments with friends or loved ones And the same people are unhappy or even angry when they are even rebuilding buildings in their own city which were destroyed (not to mention building from scratch) Then they have a lot of arguments about not building in the old styles but fun fact I can debunk them

Gründerzeit Discovering hidden gems in my city - and trying to collect them.

Budapest, II District (Hungary)
Disclaimer: not sure this is the best subreddit to post on.

I've recently moved from Spain to Hungary because my wife is Hungarian, and I'm fascinated by what I discover just by walking around with the baby stroller. I can see the gems you see in the images, and many others.

Here's my process: I walk through the city, and when I see something interesting, I ask ChatGPT or other AI to tell me a brief story about the building or monument. Sometimes I need to provide more information, such as the exact location or name of the place, because the things I point out aren't so well known.

What's interesting is that AI search connects me with fellow enthusiasts interested in the same things. This way I've discovered how the Communists in Hungary expropriated entire aristocratic neighborhoods, made of beautiful villas and mansions, and that's why nowadays regular citizens inhabit those incredible buildings on Nyúl utca in Budapest. I read about this in this architectural blog:
https://buildingstelltales.com/2024/03/09/nyul-utca-10-izidor-loebls-art-nouveau-summer-residence/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Another one of my passions is lettering design in signage. I've found plenty of retro iron-made signs still hanging in Budapest, and the same way I've found an article discussing those relics.

My professional inclinations as a product designer drive me to create an app to collect those little hidden gems and use them for tourist guides, so people could find them easily and have a brief explanation.

So I thought this group would appreciate the initiative as part of popularizing and spreading awareness of architectural heritage.
