Social life | 社交👥 Chilled Chinese guy back in China in Sept, if you need a local travel buddies or wanna try the 'vibe guiding' lol

Hey everyone,

I’m a 29-year-old Chinese guy, been living in UK for the past five years, mainly doing cultural/art-related things, that means I have extensive cross-cultural knowledge of history, art, religion or politic things, and I can help you quickly understand Chinese culture with a Western mindset.. My English is near-native, and I’d say I’m a pretty chilled person.

I’ll be back in China around Next week(Sept 8th-15th) for family visits + a short holiday (expected to be in China for one to two months).. My rough plan is:

  • Beijing
  • Shanxi (Buddhist heritage sites + some Black Myth: Wukong filming spots, if you’re into the game)
  • Then heading south, maybe Huizhou, to find a cheap beach and just relax.

Here’s the thing: most of my local friends are busy working now, so they can’t really travel with me. I thought I’d ask here, anyone interested in joining?

What I can offer:

  • I’m not a professional guide, but I know Chinese history/culture well enough to make it fun. Think of me more as a “vibe guide”, chill, flexible, happy to share stories.
  • If you want a structured experience, we can discuss a small fee.
  • Or if we just click, we can travel together, split our own costs, I’ll help sort out practical stuff, and maybe at the end you just tip me symbolically… or we just stay friends.

Main goal: to meet more people, share some adventures, and enjoy the journey together. Identity is verifiable, so no worries on that front.

If this sounds like your kind of thing, feel free to DM me!

Culture | 文化🏮 Do you guys like chow chow dogs? Are they revered in Chinese culture?

You see them depicted in a bunch of artwork and artifacts.

And Do you think there should be a push for the Chinese government to promote indigenous chinese dogs like the chow chow, sharpei, tibetan mastiff? Because these are the first domesticated dog breeds

Personal advice | 咨询💡 What do you think you would do with immortality?

Even in the classic Daoist book of immortality it talks about how everything we are gets recycled into the world. So.

Either we figure out all possible immortalities or we don't.

But as an armchair nano, Genetic and quantum mechanical engineering observer it seems quite complex and at the same time simple. Telemeres, hayflick limits, fabricating XNA, quad helixes etc.

But I think if we all become 仙's more or less. It could be quite a fun universe.

Like I can envision us figuring out how to set aside entire galaxies for role playing. And planets for IRL video games.

Anyways what will you do if you are able to strike your name from the book of the dead before we all trip on our way out of hell?

Personal advice | 咨询💡 Fiance's best friend.

I (m33 laowai) have a 26(f) Chinese fiance. We've been together nearly 4 years, engaged for over a year. Her best friend since 1st year of university, 7ish years, has no interest in meeting me, sussing me out etc despite multiple attempts from my side. Side note the friend considers herself a hardcore feminist despite living off daddies money. I've told the finance I don't trust this girl because if she cared she would at least want to know if I am a terrible human or not. My fiance doesn't understand why I don't trust her with my fiance. What's the perspective especially from Chinese, mainland born and raised ladies?

Society | 人文社会🏙️ "Underground" Christianity?

Some context.

I studied Chinese at a foreigner-oriented language school in Kunming for a few months. At one point near the end of my stay my usual teacher was replaced and my new teacher, an older woman, and it got a little weird. Note that these lessons were 1 on 1. She almost instantly asked if I was Christian. I told her I was atheist but that I was born Christian, and she seemed very dejected by that. I assume since I'm European she suspected I was. She then talked about how she had found God while listening to some underground religious radio station recite the bible in Chinese as a child. She also said she couldn't tell most people this, but that there were many many like her. She made it feel very secretive. She spent most of the allocated time trying to reconvert me lol

Anyway.. She kind of made me feel like I shouldn't tell anyone else about either, not even at the school. Is it true that there are these these huge "underground" churches in China? Or would you say she was exaggerating?

Seems the “Chinese” (I doubt they consider themselves as such) on these and many similar subs virulently racist against their own ethnicities. What is the explanation?

Personal advice | 咨询💡 I want to *live* in China (any opportunities for an Argentinian?)

I'm a 35 year-old male from Argentina and I've been studying Chinese culture and Mandarin for the past 7 years -on and off. I'm not fluent but I know I can achieve fluency very fast if I'm immersed in the language (I've already done it with Italian living one year in Rome). I admire the political and social culture of the Chinese people and I would love to experience living there first-hand. I'm interested in any financial aids for immigration, or an overview of job availability (both in the private and public sector). Do you know of any opportunities or have any suggestions?

Some context about me: I don't have a University degree but I'm an experienced professional in the field of visual design, branding, communication and education. I've been a graphic designer, project manager, team leader, public servant, language interpreter and English teacher. I've been responsible for a university's brand, media and external relations, and I was the Chief of Design and Communication in my province's Ministry of Health. Extras: I'm single, gay, polyglot, science nerd and a psychology masters' drop-out.

Edit: I know my experience and age don't matter nor are an advantage, I'm willing to work in whatever kind of job. What I'm interested in is knowing if there are opportunities. I've seen foreigners who are very well received in certain cities and who end up doing strange or niche jobs involving diplomacy, international relations or education.

Romance | 谈恋爱🥂 Dating a chinese person

Hello, I’m looking for some advice and insight about my situation right now. For context, I’m a filipino and I’m currently residing in the Philippines.

So there’s this guy at my university, he’s an exchange student, and from what I know, he’s Chinese. I’m genuinely attracted to him and want to get to know him better, but there are so many things holding me back. I’m scared to approach him because I’m shy, and I also feel like he’s out of my league.

The thing is, I’m really down bad for him even though dating isn’t really my thing. Do you have any suggestions on how I can shoot my shot? I’m planning to ask for his WeChat the next time I see him, but at the same time, I’m hesitant to approach since I know they can be more conservative. And I’m also worried it might not work out because of the language barrier 😓

I am in UK and have a JVC TV. Had this for a good couple years and had no issues. A couple days ago Baidu started appearing on the screen whenever I try to watch any English TV….. if I go on a foreign channel this doesn’t happen ?

The remote doesn’t have a button for Baidu. It’s literally just whenever I try to go on anything English this appears. I can hear the TV but can only see this

Technology | 科技📱 Curious about frontend & backend technologies used in Chinese companies

Hi everyone 👋, I’m from India and currently working as a MERN Stack developer (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js). I’m really curious to know about the tech landscape in China:

What frontend and backend technologies do companies in China mostly use in their projects? (For example, in India, React, Angular, and Node.js are quite popular.)

Where do students usually learn programming and gain practical experience — through universities, bootcamps, or online platforms?

How do working professionals upgrade their skills in China? (For instance, in India many developers use platforms like Coursera, Udemy, YouTube, and company-sponsored training.)

It would be great to hear some insights from developers, students, or anyone working in the Chinese IT industry.

Thanks in advance!

Work | 工作💼 Where will job adverts be visible to Chinese writers and authors?

I've tried posting on XHS but get too many inexperienced unskilled applicants.

I'd like to post a job ad that experienced Chinese writers (e.g. webnovel authors) will be sure to see.

Where might I be able to do that?

People | 人物👤 How do chinese people attend the military parade?

I came across the youtube video on the military parade in china and i am astonished by the scale. In vietnam, we have just got a parade, but the small streets were so flocked with people who even slept and ate on the pavement while raining just to wait and see the parade. I wonder if the same thing happens in china or no?

Romance | 谈恋爱🥂 AI Dating Situation

I'm seeing more people "dating" AI recently. Reminds me of the movie Her. After discovering the subreddit, r/MyBoyfriendIsAI, I realized this is not a joke. I remember in 2018 when that Japanese guy married a Hatsune Miku hologram. It makes me think... it doesn't take much for a guy to fall in love. Now, with AI, I see this is much more of a phenomenon for women. Maybe the men are satisfied with all the AI sex bots or 'build your AI girlfriend' games and don't crave companionship. Just kidding. Anyways, I'm wondering what the situation is in China and amongst Chinese people. I saw a BBC article that made it sound like it was a just a phenomenon amongst Chinese women, but this is definitely a global thing. What do you guys think? Is this a problem or an acceptable outlet? Is this a sign of mental illness or will it become normal? Or, is this not happening at all in China?
