NYE in NYC for First-Timers: Romantic Rooftop Bars (No Times Square!)

Hello guys,

My boyfriend and I are visiting NYC for NYE for the first time. We’re both introverted and not into huge crowds, so Times Square is a no-go.We’d love a romantic rooftop bar with fireworks views. Do rooftop bars usually stay open late until the countdown? We’re staying near Penn Station.

Any recommendations for rooftops with great views, or general NYE tips for a low-key but special night?

Foreign Poster Aussie exchange student here. Just a few questions.

• First of all I have two different options, one is UT-Austin, the other is UNC-Chapel Hill. What would you recommend? I mean this one broadly but I am studying journalism (with intent to do sport).

• Given my two options which uni is better to attend as an Aussie? (Take this one any way you want, like generally, culturally, yeah go for it).

• Really hate to be that guy but apparently our accent is "hot"? I personally don't get it but that's just me I guess.

• What's a few things I should know before moving to the US?

And final question:

• I mean this respectfully, apparently the US isn't friendly to foreign students at the moment? Is it safe to go? In your defence we get just the bad stuff out of the US so it could be totally fine but just wanted to get an honest opinion on this one too.

• Literally anything else you want to add to help is appreciated!

Answer all of them or even one, I don't care much but your opinion is always valued as a clueless Aussie. Thanks in advance you lot!

Questions about Amazon Return

Context: I am an international student who recently (about a week ago) bought a headphone for $40 and got free delivery for next item, so I ordered mouse worth of $12. My phone is Redmi (Xiaomi - chinese brand). The issue is in my phone specifically, the sound lags sometimes. However, it works perfectly fine in my Laptop. Like, it stops sound for 2-3 seconds sometimes while playing music from my phone, which is kind of annoying. I guess it's my phone's bluetooth incompatibility with headphone, cause I had earpod which works completely fine with my phone.

Coming to my question: Do I get full refund for the return? There are no scratches or anything on the headphone. However, the packaging box has little bit tear. Now, I don't know if I get full refund. If they even cut upto $5, it's fine, but if it's above that, I am better off accepting that annoyance. Also, do I need to return that mouse as well since I've used that free delivery?

Also, I checked "Not needed anymore" option to return. Does it matter?

Culture & History Democrats/Liberals of America, have recent events changed your views on the 2nd Amendment?

I'm ex-conservative. I grew up in a very religious and conservative community and of course it shaped my views. I started to leave my religion in my teens and joined the Army at 18 when they would have had me leave home to serve a mission for a couple years. Since joining the Army, I've met so many people, traveled to different parts of the world, and have had exposure to hundreds of different beliefs and points of view.

I now consider myself pretty liberal with the exception of my views of the Second Amendment. Recent events and the threats of an oppressive, authoritarianism regime have really solidified to me how important the Second Amendment is. Have your views changed? Would you utilize the 2nd to defend yourself and others today?

Culture & History Does it worth it to visit all of the 50 states?

Hello! I'm a European traveler, and I'm curious about some things. Most of the people visit New York City, or some beach in CA of FL. As an American what would you say, should I visit all the states?

Graduates of American public schools (90s-00s), what was your experience like?

I didn't grow up in the US, but I'm fascinated by the cultural and educational experience there. For those of you who went to a public high school in the 1990s or early 2000s, could you share what it was like?

I'm curious about:

· The overall school mentality and social hierarchy (e.g., cliques, sports culture). · The academic side: SAT/ACT prep, finals, GPA pressure. · Key nostalgic memories (specific trends, events, slang). · How you think your experience differed from schools today.

Thanks for sharing your stories! And I'm sorry if I don't see your answers right away, this is my first time on Reddit 🥺💜

Foreign Poster What's the general feeling in your country at the moment?

I don't usually pay a lot of attention to the news as I find it kinda depressing, but... even as a Brit, we're hearing a lot about what is happning in the USA politically at the moment. I'm not here to stir up anger or other negativity, I'm asking this out of genuine curiosity as someone living in another country and hearing a lot of news stories about events in yours.

I'm curious to know how the citizens of the country, and it's communities are feeling at the moment. How do you feel about current events? Has there been any change in community spirit or relations for you and youre friends/family?

Some of the reports I've read have been quite conflicting, so... I'm curious to hear how it is there for the average person. Thank you!

Foreign Poster Transit Through the USA

Hey Americans!

In December, I will be travelling from New Zealand through DFW (Dallas Fort Worth), to get to England. I'm hearing horror stories about TSA refusing entry to travellers just trying to pass through.

I'm also hearing things about mobile devices being searched at the border. It makes me quite uncomfortable that I have no right to privacy, but of course I'd be compliant if asked to hand my phone over - I'm just trying to visit my family!

My questions are - what exactly is it that TSA are looking for in devices? Will all my photos/messages/social media be looked at? And is this even a thing for those simply passing through in transit?

TIA for any insight 😄

Foreign Poster Why name your son 'Junior'?

Hello, first of all, sorry for my English, it's not my native language. I wanted to know why in North American (U.S.) culture it’s common to give your own first name to your son followed by 'Junior.' I feel like not letting him have a name of his own takes away part of his individuality. On top of that, I find it a bit egocentric to give your son your own name. Thanks in advance for your answers.

What is the cultural significance of different house exterior materials?

Hello American pals, thank you for being so helpful with my question about porch life! I'm an absolute convert, I wish I could have a porch. Please do let me know if I'm asking too many questions, I'm trying to limit it. I could honestly be here all day asking all about your architecture.

What do you think of different home exteriors, like brick, stone, siding, shingle, stucco etc? What do you think looks nice? What do you think of as aspirational? Are different things indicative of different socio-economic classes, states or types of people? What do you see the most of in your local community? Are the houses you see typically made out of multiple materials, like siding with stone accents and stucco near the roof or something? Do you like that, or would you prefer a house made out of all the same material?

Also, if you have a shingle house, is the roof made of the same shingle or is it a different colour or somthing? Do you even get houses that are entirely shingle, or is it just to add a pop of texture to a section of the house?

Thank you!

Foreign Poster What actually is the pay like for servers in America?

I often see discourse surrounding tipping culture and about the pay for waitstaff in the US. From my understanding, you’re not expected to be paid a living wage, but instead earn enough money through tips, which has led to a culture where everyone should tip so that servers earn enough to survive. But, I’m not American and have never been a waiter, so I can’t exactly weigh in with personal experience.

I was thinking about this as a friend of mine is trying to get a job as a waitress where she’ll earn £13 an hour or 17.58 USD + tips (though tipping culture is very different here).

I thought it would be best to ask people who actually live there and may have experience with this line of work whether the online representation is accurate. Also, if you would happen to have any experience working in the US and other countries, I really like to know what the comparisons are like

Food & Drink Are there any McDonald's with Coca-Cola Freestyle machines? Or both Freestyle AND regular soda fountains?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I'm from England and have never been to the US. Afaik there has never been a McDonald's with Freestyle machines in England (which is probably for the best as I heard a lot of people say they don't like the taste), but there definitely have been in the US. (Proof in photo attached; taken by one of my family member's friends, but none in my family remembers who it was)

Afaik there are/were only a few McDonald's with these machines in the US. Are they still around? And if so, where are they? Thanks.

Dear American, how much do you personally believe in this?

How much do you believe in Ronald Reagan’s quote: “You can go to live in France, but you cannot become a Frenchman. You can go to live in Germany or Turkey or Japan, but you cannot become a German, a Turk, or a Japanese. But anyone, from any corner of the Earth, can come to live in America and become an American.”? Do you think this is still true today? Why or why not? I'm curious🌹

Economy How do Americans feel about "bringing manufacturing back to the US?"

Hi,

I'm not trying to start a discussion about Trump. I'm just genuinely curious about how everyday Americans view the idea (is it a slogan? a policy? a stance?) of "reshoring manufacturing."

From my perspective, there seem to be two major challenges that make it feel almost impossible:

  1. Global industrial specialization has been evolving for 80 years since World War II. The supply chain for any given product is now incredibly fragmented, almost like molecular gastronomy. To refocus all of that back into a single country (any country, not just the US) seems like an impossible task.

  2. My second point is about the American workforce itself.

It might be a bit out of place for me to say this as a Chinese person, but I'm sure you've seen reports or documentaries about the poor working conditions in some low-cost factories in China and other parts of Asia. Would American workers be willing to work in similar factories if they were built in the US?

If not... that would mean new factories would have to meet current US labor and welfare standards. This would inevitably translate into higher costs for consumers.

When those same American workers leave the factory and become consumers at a store, would they be able to afford the very products they make? (For example, a simple synthetic t-shirt costing $199.)

I'm really interested in hearing the thoughts of ordinary Americans on this. I apologize in advance if anything I've said comes across as offensive.

Are Lee Radziwill and Fleming baga now available at Tory Burch outlets in the U.S.?

Hi everyone! I'm based in Asia and I’ve been seeing a lot of local sellers offering Tory Burch bags at significantly reduced prices. For example, I recently saw a Lee Radziwill Double Bag priced at around USD 265, which surprised me because I always thought this line was part of their higher-end collection.

I asked one seller about the pricing and they mentioned that they source from Tory Burch outlet stores in the U.S., where they supposedly get bulk discounts and tax refund deductions that help bring the price down. What’s confusing is that they’re also offering the Soft Convertible Fleming for around USD 315, which I thought was generally more affordable than the Radziwill. That got me wondering:

Do Tory Burch outlet stores in the U.S. actually carry the Lee Radziwill line? Has the Fleming line been moved to outlets recently?

How common is it for U.S. shoppers to get significant discounts via bulk buying and tax refunds from outlets?

Since Tory Burch doesn’t have an official outlet website, it's been hard to verify which lines are actually sold there. I’d really appreciate hearing from U.S.-based shoppers or anyone familiar with Tory Burch outlet inventory.

Just trying to understand how the pricing works and what’s typically available at outlets. Thanks in advance!
