Hello. Im an international student coming to do my PhD in Melbourne at Deakin University. Im going to want to move into my own place in January.
Given that I am going in as a PhD student, I really would like to live alone. I dont mind travelling for up to 1.5 hours and also cutting down on other entertainment costs to afford the studio. Additionally, I don't need it to be massive- as long as I can fit a single bed and desk in and it's close-ish to public transport, i honestly dont mind.
I was wondering if you could please help me understand which suburbs I should look for and what the tentative average rent pw would be? Additionally, is Jan a good time move in to flats- is there usually an availability during that time as the new semester begins from Feb.
From what I can see- 350 pw is quite common ( using rent.au) which is good with me. I can spend a 80-100 pw for utilities as well beyond that.
Thank you for your help
From a very lost and nervous international student

How do you get an Australian rental that "needs references", when you've been a home owner for many years?
