I trust the opinion of no one who thinks Aang staying would have done anything except get the Avatar killed.

I think, at minimum, it's fair to say Aang (i.e., via the Avatar state) could've protected ENOUGH monks until the end of the comet that (over decades in hiding) the nomads could've rebuilt. Not that it was Aangs fault, but automatically saying he would've died and the airbenders virtual extinction was an inevitability is a bit of a copout
