Leprechauns aren't really a thing in Irish culture so much. It's mostly a creation of Irish-America who are guilty of perpetuating lazy Irish stereotypes at times. For instance, 'Top of the Mornin' to you' has never been in use in Ireland AFAIK.

They're meant to be diminutive forms of the old Celtic Tuatha De Danann, which were essentially Celtic deities, despite being considered closer to Fae folk.
