The last fight
Why did Aang rely mostly on earth bending in the final fight with the fire lord?
Air is where he is most talented and Throughout the whole show, he plays with zuko or don’t seems.

Earth actually becomes Aang's second best element, right behind wind since its so accessible. The reality of the fight is that fire is actually Aang's strongest element due to Sozin's comet but rarely uses it since he doesn't want to kill Ozai.

Zuko is not a full trained firebender, his bending is kinda weak if we put against Azula or Ozai. so, when they were still enemies, air was enough. Air was enough even with Azula, but in those fights, it seems that Azula always had the upper hand.
Ozai, as the firelord, is a fully expert firebender, trained in secret techniques only taught to firelords and maybe azula, and also he was overpowered by Sozin's comet, and Aang did not wanted to run. So, for a direct approach, he used earthbending

It was mainly defensive and earth is the best defense against fire. Ozai was on the offensive for most of the fight until Aang unlocked the Avatar State. Ozai didn't leave any room for anything but evasion and defense until Aang actually had the power to overwhelm a Comet strengthened Fire Lord.
