However, Cruijff also had signed a bunch of players who didn't turn out to be quite as good as he though: Kodro, Korneev, Cuellar, Prosinecki, Hagi, Lopetegui and Jose Mari. This didn't really inspire the board a whole lot of confidence in his choices.
Zidane is the name that keeps coming back, but if I'm not mistaken he had other good names on the list. In the end most of 'em didn't come because Cruijff was sacked. That's the sole reason.
Otherwise part of the core of 96-97 would've consisted in some galacticos, with zidane, ronaldo and figo.
