Look mate, EVERYTHING they've discussed, ALL the details are improvements. Just keep the fucking fantasy shit out of the core of the game.
I dont want to load up Battlefield to fight hordes of pink bowtie, black female afro samurai katana wielding deaths squads.
YES, that is an exaggeration, but it's often useful to evaluate concepts between 2 extremes.

u/huxtiblejones May 24 '18
I agree - the game's core is going in a fantastic direction with some clever new ideas that should make the matches more fun. If they can just keep the tone of the game mostly in line with the popularly understood aesthetic of the era, it'll be great. I want to see customization like this rather than dudes in motorcycle jackets with braveheart face paint attacking each other with swords. While I won't argue that military videogames are necessarily respecting the very real tragedies they portray, I think it's fair to say that misrepresenting WW2 in a really extreme way is pretty offensive to the, I don't know, 'public memory' of the event? Like it or not, a lot of people learn about history through pop culture so there's a bit of an obligation to keep it mildly accurate.
16
u/Brahmaster May 24 '18
Yeah, there's a lot you can do for character customization:
Gender, colour, face presets, scarfs, eye patches, satchels, belt kits, goggles, torn/patches/dirty clothing textures, face paint, straps, bandages, vegetation, non-standard gloves and boots, ALL the weapon modifications and skins
ETC ETC ETC
Without compromising standardized uniforms and helmets.
Without introducing unrealistic fantasy weapons and fashion statements.

I think its fairly fuckin disingenuous to acknowledge that making some of the most horrific and bloody wars into videogames for entertainment is disrespectful and then in the same sentence say they shouldn't be misrepresented because its offensive. There is NO obligation for videogame corporations to teach accurate history, nor would I want there to be. Can they? Sure, but if they want to use WWII merely as a setting and twist it however they want that is completely fine. Everyone on this board complaining DICE isn't providing a WWII experience that is respectful to the history is reactionary scum that just doesn't want to see women or black people in a setting "they don't belong in." If you want an accurate portrayal of WWII history, read a fuckin history book.

People screaming at people for disliking the girl and calling it misogyny. But really it's that her character design so easily creates an example of where it went wrong in the trailer. The cricket bat, her way of speaking in 'gritty' ww2 and the prosthetic arm. Those 3 things alone are way out there in terms of what people were expecting from this trailer. The British Commando is also a great example with the Katana on his back.
If you want to go to the history side yes it's a woman that's not Russian on the frontline but my main gripe is with what I said in the first paragraph. Let's not go "reeee misogyny" because people said something bad about a woman. It will just make us go around in circles.
77
u/Boomkin4lyfe May 24 '18
I’m fine with a strong female lead in video games. Some games have done it right. But the extent they went through with this character and trying to make us relate to her tragic family backstory along with making her stand out so much rather than before where we were just simple soldiers.

It's Battlefield. As far as most of us who've been with the series since day one are concerned the SP is just a waste of hard drive space. Literally not even worth thinking about let alone forming an opinion of the game over.
Of course it does bring up the bigger problem. The trailer was worthless for showing the aspects most of us actually do care about.
10
u/thewoogier Recon/Sniper May 24 '18
The series didn't have SP until the 5th game, the franchise is multiplayer at it's core. The prosthetic is a little ridiculous but apparently it was real and it's just customization in a multiplayer game it affects nothing but your perception.
The gameplay is what's I care about and will determine the longevity of the game. The real travesty is that the info from the jack frags video was way more interesting and should have been shown off in a better way than a bunch of frantic action cuts strung together like you said.
9
u/Tireseas May 24 '18
4th game actually. The often forgotten console exclusive BF2 Modern Combat had a campaign. 1942 also attempted to provide a "campaign" of sorts through sequential bot matches but they were just that, bot matches. Really though the only ones anyone ever really cared about were the Bad Company series and that's only because they had personality.

33
u/huxtiblejones May 24 '18
I do hate that, and I'm one of the folks who's not at all offended by women being a part of this game. It's kind of insulting to turn every female character into a 2 dimensional, overly-confident hero archetype. There's room for complexity, or portraying them as average soldiers and such, like a female sniper who's as tired and flawed as everyone else. It's a much less pandering way of adding that perspective of the war.
48
u/Jakeola1 May 24 '18
Because if female characters are portrayed as anything other than perfect badass mary sues, the devs/writers/whoever will be called sexist.
10
u/RockFrost May 24 '18
By who, Kotaku and Polygon? Who cares honestly.
8
u/Jakeola1 May 24 '18
Well unfortunately, game developers listen to them and take their criticisms to heart. As apparent from this trailer.
10
u/RockFrost May 24 '18
Being that it's a Swedish studio I wouldn't be surprised if they actually have similar belief systems to the writers of those publications.
Either way, I think its a shame to choose political correctness over historical accuracy when it comes to design decisions that do not have any impact on game play

May 24 '18
Pretty widely accepted definition is "Gaslighting is a form of manipulation that seeks to sow seeds of doubt in a targeted individual or in members of a targeted group, hoping to make them question their own memory, perception, and sanity" but in more practical ways it's this:
Person 1: "I wish DICE remained faithful to historical accuracy in BF 5's setting. This seems really strange."
Person 2 responding to person 1: "Wahaaaa ermegehrd muh vidya games! No girls allowed!!!".
So, what person 2 is clearly doing is painting person 1 as irrational by rewording their statements in the most extreme and hyperbolic ways possible to make their opinion seem insane. It's a more insidious way of building a straw man argument except you're not even acknowledging the other person even has an argument you're just painting them as fringe or lunatic.
What I'm saying you'll see happen across this sub is exactly that. Everyone who isn't comfortable with liberties being taken in BFV's historical setting will be pushed to the outside of every discussion over time as some sort of Incel or misogynist or even an alt right regressive until people just say fuck it and stop complaining because they don't want to be labeled or associated with these groups.
I'm already done raising my concerns about it and it's only reveal day. I'm just leaving the discussion all together and keeping an eye on the game to find out what the finished product looks like.

Look, okay, I concede that this character design is supremely hamfisted and overwrought. It's nothing about the gender but more about the look. I would never guess that this character featured in a WW2 game if I saw it alone, it looks more like Fallout.
My bet is that this is some named protagonist pal in the single player campaign and it doesn't really represent the aesthetic or the actual vibe of the multiplayer game. There's a pretty substantial difference between what you see in the BF1 campaign vs. playing it daily.
My advice for DICE (like they need it) is to reign in the aesthetic in multiplayer so it feels more like uniformed armies fighting in WW2 and not like a ragtag bunch of action fantasy mercenaries. I don't believe these games need to be completely true to history since they are an arcade experience, but there's a pretty established vibe in WW2 that we experience through video and photos. I think you could see some really crazy, fun, and valid outfits based off partisans but I'd expect most conventional battles should portray soldiers wearing uniforms with some room for variety in the styles. It's pretty out there to see a bald bearded dude with face paint and no shirt or coat running and gunning in Normandy, I don't really get that.
But my advice for the community is to remember that this is just some shitty trailer. Most trailers are not really representative of what you get in the end, they often over dramatize the game, they exaggerate the action and the pace. Go back and watch the BF1 trailer and you'll see some moments that represent the real experience in the game while other strings of events are much more orchestrated than they are in play. I will honestly be pissed if the game is crawling with out of place cosmetics but I'm still willing to offer them the benefit of the doubt.
