Art Ozzy Osbourne's last performance of 'Mama, I'm Coming Home' before his passing today

u/thecoffeecrazy Jul 22 '25
Rest in peace legend. I can only imagine the emotions going through him as he sang that. Facing his own mortality and singing words written by Lemmy one of his closest friends.

The outpouring of love from the audience must have meant so much to him. I'm glad he got to experience that one last time before he went.

Lars Ulrich puts it perfectly in his Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame induction speech:
"As one who's fought labeling at any opportunity given, I hereby not only acknowledge, but scream from every fucking rooftop that Black Sabbath is and always will be synonymous with the term 'heavy metal.' Damn right. Sabbath join what I consider a very short list of artists who can claim to be synonymous with their specific genre of music. One being Bob Marley with reggae, Bob Dylan with folk, Johnny Cash with country, perhaps Bill Haley with rockabilly - but no matter how you fuckin' slice and dice it, when you say 'heavy metal,' the words 'Black Sabbath' hover in the shadows, fighting for pole position. On any given day, the heavy metal genre might as well be subtitled 'Music Derivative of Black Sabbath.'"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAlUd3MTNWA&t=4s
God Bless You, Ozzy Osbourne.

Such a sweet message by Lars. And absolutely correct too. Black Sabbath IS Metal

Imagine hearing a crowd of people singing this in unison as they're walking back to their cars after Ozzfest. People walking that long walk back to the parking area at the PNC Bank art Center in New jersey. One person starts. And then everybody is singing this. You hear the voices floating from far back as everybody is walking in a line. I've seen Ozzy perform eight times in my life. He's never disappointed. He was absolute gentleman of a man too. One of the nicest celebrities I've ever met. I was the biggest fan from the time I was just a little, little girl up until my adult years. Feels like part of me died today.

u/Placid_Observer Jul 22 '25
Imagine being one of those lucky few who got to see his last show live? What a bittersweet memory that'd be.
62
u/Starwarsnerd91 Jul 22 '25
I'm one of those lucky ones. I got a last-minute ticket for £500 and I'm so glad I did. RIP OZZY 🤴

u/bobmillahhh Jul 22 '25
Charles Bradley did a sick cover of Sabbath's "Changes" with Budos Band, and I've been listening to that a lot the last two weeks as Budos Band played a show last Tuesday and with the final Sabbath gig being 17 days ago.
But ironically, I was at what was one of Charles Bradley's last shows before an aggressive cancer relapse took him in 2017. He went through the crowd giving hugs, like he always did, and I stepped back like "I dunno, he's drenched in sweat." Really regret that now.

u/Thwonp Jul 23 '25
Bradley absolutely owned that song. I saw him perform it in 2016. Such a great performer.

I went to re-watch this video after reading your comment. Had me crying like a baby. Damn this is powerful

Man, never heard this version. Thanks for sharing; I'd have hated to go through life and missed it!
Reminds me a little of this girl on YT, Carli Ihde, that did a stripped-down, acoustic version of NMH's "Holland 1945".

u/Ritaredditonce Jul 22 '25
I feel the same. Hearing the crowd along with Ozzy gave me goosebumps.

My dad died of cancer two months ago. His only request was that they play this when he was taken off life support. He died listening to his favorite musician. Knowing ozzy has passed now too has me crying like a baby.

May your father rest in peace!

Edit: yeah. Apparently, it's a thing.

I'm surprised how good his voice still sounds given how bad his health was. What an honorable thing to do for his fans, finishing up the last show. Maybe he needed it for himself as well.

Ozzy was my first concert. Funny enough, it was the No More Tours tour in 1992. I'm very glad, as are millions, that he couldn't quit singing. 30+ years later and only weeks away from death, he still sounded the same. He gave it everything he had for his fans. What an amazing man.

My mom and I were in that crowd, holding each, crying and singing along. Ozzy’s voice was a soundtrack to my mom’s life and my own. I know she wants this song played at her funeral which makes it even harder to listen to. I’m so thankful we got to be there for his send off and I can’t believe he’s gone today. He put on an amazing last performance.

July 5, 2025, at Villa Park in Birmingham, England
The event, titled "Back to the Beginning," was a farewell show that saw him perform a solo set and then reunite with the original lineup of Black Sabbath. Osbourne, who had been dealing with various health issues, including Parkinson's disease, performed from a throne on stage.

This one feels different. I guess because he had the chance to say good bye to his fans and the world got to see him shortly before. I would say the man lived a very full life RIP Ozzy.
1
u/Economy-Pudding-6371 Jul 23 '25
Oh man. Well THAT gets a guy right in the gut.
A high-school friend introduced me to Sabbath with a copy of Sabbath Bloody Sabbath that his sister had given to him. I was grabbed instantly and got every album they ever made. About one-third of my first band's set was Black Sabbath songs (Dirty Women was epic).
I saw Ozzy play more than once in the 80s. The first time, Motörhead was opening for him, with Fast Eddie and Philthy Phil. It was great to see him in a smaller hall, before he and Randy Rhoads came back the next year for a tour where he played bigger places. They blew the doors off the place. Incredible experience.
I met Ozzy at an autograph session once. He was a bit deaf, but that's to be expected; he was a heck of a nice, humble guy, I thought.
Love to all who loved him, especially those in Birmingham.

Ozzy singing "Mama, I'm Coming Home" is reminding of Johnny Cash's "Hurt". Both songs were a fantastic way of portraying that both singers were not long for this world. RIP to the Prince of Darkness.
