Butthurt OP Why Gen Z Nowadays Hard To Get Jobs
Hi, good Morning everybody, when people say that gen z nowadays seems rude. I just keep quite. I know some old gen z but not the youngsters.
But, recently Im helping my boss searching for part time worker for his business and now I had so much experience dealing with a lot of them.
Mostly that I found, not all gen z are rude. But those that are born 2004 above seems to be very2 rude. Like they dont know manner.
When they apply for jobs, they dont really introduce themself or even say hi. They directly say "what job?", "where?" Like they were talking with their friends.
And more worst, DONT HAVE SPM. Hmm.. Im okay you dont have degree whatsoever. But SPM is like a basic to show you do show up to school all those years.
When I ask, when they dont take SPM. Their answer is they are busy dating and getting married. And now after getting pregnant, they desperately searching for jobs.
However my boss give chances to all this people before, and then I need to work with a bitch. Talking rude and slander me at workplace when the boss is not there.
Luckily boss watch the cctv, and that girl got a warning for being rude and shouting to me. I know why she purposely do that. Because she is afraid she lost her only job and couldnt find anywhere else because she got no SPM. But that doesnt mean you have to eliminate everybody else.
If that is my company, I would prefer candidates that have basic knowledge, basic manner and SPM. Now I know doesnt have SPM is a redflag.

Weh.....adik aku ada yang GenZ. Tapi the GenZ that I met in the workforce is...to be very polite, spineless. Adik2 aku perempuan. I asked if they have boyfriends, their answer, "have you seen the boys these days? Lembik dan semua minta suap." Lol

semua minta suap??..that made me laugh, unexpectedly

it means spoon feeding… they cannot do things or figure out themselves, every single thing the boss/manager need to provide/tell

asking for bribes

u/yummayum 23h ago
Not necessarily for this context. During my time at college, there is another meaning of 'minta suap' which is literally like a baby, asking to be fed by a spoon. In another words, cannot be independent, everything have to help/show them, for examples, need to teach student how to google for articles for assignment, how to use Microsoft word, or how to put transition in presentation slides (FYI, those are NOT lecturer's responsibility!)
Sorry for long explanation, i hope its interesting enough to not skip reading.
TLDR: Literal babies that cannot be independent at all and have to be spoonfed, bathe, put to bed and sing lullaby for them.

I have this same problem at my workplace. The new male hires are less competent than even the female ones. Has a weaker mentality too and crumbled FAST under a slight hint of pressure. Idk man, how do i help these kids.
12
10
u/budaknakal1907 1d ago
You cant. I've tried playing the "male has to lead" card and "how would you provide for your family" card. I've tried giving them more time to assimilate. But nothing would change unless they wanted to change.

What's happened in the US 20 years ago is I reckon what is happening in Malaysia.
More women are entering and graduating tiertary education than men.
So with that said, you can put the pieces together and sort of predict what will happen
3
u/hazy-minded 21h ago
The new male hires are less competent than even the female ones.
Honestly my reaction would be the same regardless of which gender is more competent (in the context of office work, of course).
Because it's just sexist to be okay with the assumption that women are less competent than men

I have worked with female GenZs and they are polite, resourceful and work hard. When they quit, they always tell me first and its always because they get better job opportunities. Male GenZs however sent resumes in mixed language, come to interviews late, and quit because they dont think they can handle the stress and expectation.
My sisters are still in Uni. They hold significant post in NGOs and student bodies. They complained about the lack of resourcefulness of their male companions.
11
u/RealElith 1d ago
hey man...i worked with Gen Z too. from my experience, they are alright, if anything the female one is the one acting abit pampered in my department, but I wont say it because they are gen Z but their personality itself.

Spineless is so real. We have many public speaking sessions in my office, countless times I told my interns to be brave and ask questions. They all takut, sampai sudah tak bangun tanya soalan.
Among themselves bising giler, siap main kejar2 menjerit2 lagi, but when it is time to speak up, semua menyorok pura2 scroll phone. And we are talking about interns doing undergrad degree in uni. Not people without education.
And I think the femboy fascination is also real. When playing online quiz, a boy just straight up put his name as "suri rumah". Wow.
Probably this generation memang tanpa segan silu cari perempuan provider untuk bela dia.

u/RedRunner04 22h ago
Jangan judging, ak yg dah mid-30s, rumah 2, pun still mencari2 my sugar mama 😆
3
u/Sl0wp3wPew 19h ago
Why they not malu do tiktok dance in the middle of public but so shy and timid to stand up and ask things they dont know? I gave my 2 interns jobs related to their field of study, somehow they dont know some of the work. Instead of asked at least for confirmation, they rather search on youtube and in the end they need to repeat the procedure again. Not only waste the materials of the company, but also waste of time. Can someone from this gen let me know why so that I can understand my next intern?

UPSR PMR all abolished growing kids have no incentive to push themselves to work hard. SPM is their first taste of life challenge.

Literally the stupidest change to education ever since merdeka. I still can’t brain
65
u/Distinct-Dot-1333 1d ago edited 1d ago
They copied those 'modern' systems not realising that only works if you've already modernised the ppl too. The test heavy system was made for standardisation. Specifically, it mass produces the 'just smart and disciplined enough to regularly follow complex instructions' with a relatively high degree of success. Which is a huge boon for developing countries. The minimal tests system is meant to focus on creative and emotional growth, which is only useful if the system as well as the average home is good enough that most kids are already assured to get a decent education regardless and more importantly, see learning as something they want to do, instead of just to get a job. Malaysia simply is not culturally ready for that.
I dare say even Singapore isn't. Very few countries can actually benefit from upgrading to that kind of system, but those that can, the returns are massive, which is why some other countries clumsily try to implement it.
22
u/No_Wait_3628 1d ago
The only this system can be implemented is if the parents themselves actually have time for the children.
Children are given more freedom, but parents still work that 9 to 6 job that lives them with minimal energy.
Now with kids not having a tunnel to focus on, the void inside them is even worse.
13
u/Distinct-Dot-1333 1d ago
That's one of the main reasons why I said Singapore can't pull it off either. But even more than that, their attitude to education is incompatible. They are highly advanced and civic, but academic achievement consumes them. Iirc one of my secondary school's teachers made a Singaporean student cry just by being nice and telling them they needed to rest as well as work.
13
u/No_Wait_3628 1d ago
You don't get awarded with the second highest child suicide rate for no reason.

u/EndChemical 1d ago
No incentive and unprepared for actual challenges, and after graduation they feel entitled for a job.

That argument sound so strange to me. Malaysia having centralized exams for year six and form 3 is actually not common at all globally. Why do u want malaysian students to be bound by this centralized exam since a very young age? Kids shouldnt need this exam to be motivated. The problem is not this. Its something else. Its the mindset of our people. See? When the fovernment abolish the exam, people start to blame that for no motivation. WTF. U motivate urself to study la. Nak seribu daya
34
u/00raiser01 1d ago
Considering the west education system is failing them now. So much so they only have primary level of reading skills and comprehension. Our old system is much better.
While places with exams (China, Korean, Japan) is keeping higher education attunement. The west isn't a good example to follow currently.
15
u/DDemoNNexuS 1d ago
so while the government abolished upsr and pmr/pt3. Did they do any interventions or programmes to "motivate the students to study"? did the gov tried to push for a healthier mindset/culture of reading /studying?
-5
u/veryverynicela 1d ago
Thats not the argument i am making. U are straying off topic. Maybe the government should do other initiatives like u said (i dont know, im not a school kid anymore). But a quick google search tells me that the gov did do plenty of other initiatives. Sounds good to me. Nak seribu daya
4
u/Electronic-Contact15 1d ago
The exams are meant to measure how the kids are doing regarding their mastery of the skills taught in school.
This is a completely standard way of identifying weaknesses.
If there is no standard exam, how is the government supposed to know who to allocate the resources to?
How are they supposed to plan for the programs for the smart kids and what are they going to help the weaker kids so they don’t fall behind?
By the time they sit for SPM, its already too late.
-3
u/veryverynicela 1d ago
If kids only study because of exams, that means our old system already failed. Other top countries like Finland, Japan, and even the US don’t have UPSR/PMR-style national exams, yet their students are still motivated. Real motivation should come from curiosity, goals, and support from teachers and parents — not fear of a test. The fact that we Malaysians feel lost without exams is proof that the past system made us too dependent, not that abolishing them was wrong.
2
u/DDemoNNexuS 21h ago
Again, my point is, if you take away the extrinsic motivation for kids to study, while NOT giving any form of motivation for kids to study. what's the point?
You're taking away smtg that is kinda working but not adding ANYTHING to keep things going, there's no change in our edu system or syllabus. Nothing was added but more was cut.
Our system is not doing anything remotely close to Japan or Finland.
2
u/Electronic-Contact15 1d ago
The exam is only every few years. UPSR after 6 years and PMR after 3.
If your kid cannot handle that, he needs to be put in a special needs school.
-1
u/veryverynicela 1d ago
I understand why people miss UPSR or PMR, but it’s a little worrying that we think kids can’t be motivated without tests. Isn’t it our job to teach them to be self-driven, instead of just expecting exams to do it for us? At least for my kids, i will try my best to make them feel curious to learn. Not just because there is an exam coming. I rest my case
3
u/Electronic-Contact15 1d ago
Good luck to your kids.
For the rest of the children, i am sure they are tougher than them.

u/veryverynicela 1d ago
Jauh betul menyimpang kau ni. Kalau ye pun beragak la nak menghina anak orang. Orang ckp pasal exam PMR dan UPSR. Ko plak cakap mcm exam kat sekolah tu dah takde terus. SPM pun ada lagi wei. Adui la. Bruh I am working at your everyday grocery store and let me tell you, there are countless primary 6 students don't even know how to properly read or count. There are rare occasions, but I've met few secondary students also with the same problem. Our education system is failing our children and I genuinely fear for our nation's future..
0
u/retrofrenzy 1d ago
Still, to motivate the students. People who did not know any form of hardship have no resilience. And since there are no centralized exams anymore, I expect every school has to host their own entrance exams now? You got to study anyway.
34
u/nova9001 1d ago
Get used to it. Certain jobs especially part time jobs attract these kind of crowd. No certification, no desire to improve, what other jobs you expect them to do?

u/TutorFlat2345 1d ago
Haiyo, adik, school dropouts aren't a fair representation of the entire generation.
Those candidates are lacking in manners simply because they don't understand the value of good impression. (Just like how crucial proper grammar is in corporate/finance sector).

u/ColdAttempt954 23h ago
dont need to put down school dropouts... i dropped out at 12 and ive done quite well for my self so far.

Times are different. Maybe during your school days, dropping out is common.
Nowadays you drop out, and you might not even be qualified for the most entry level jobs.

u/Weekly-Meeting8751 1d ago
think it’s because most of the talented or well-mannered Gen Z went to Singapore or MNCs to seek better job opportunities. 😂 Malaysia’s SMEs pay too little, so the people they attract are of lower quality.
6
u/Nightingdale099 1d ago
Unfair to say all people with SPM go Singapore
11
u/Weekly-Meeting8751 1d ago
Ah, sorry, I didn’t mean that. I just want to point out that it’s not related to Gen Z. But I could say that Gen Z nowadays are generally either lazy to work because they feel hopeless about their future, or very hardworking but Malaysian enterprises can’t offer enough pay to attract them.

To the Gen Z fret not, this generation expectations is a constant thing. 10 years down the road another generation will take your place as the “problem to hire generation”

u/EuclideanEdge42 1d ago
Complain all of these, but is your company offering a salary/benefits commensurate with a SPM leaver?
What it sounds like to me is your company is offering salaries only desperate people will consider.
16
u/Purple-Objective-841 1d ago
Every job has different requirements. I believe OP’s company looking for a basic skills to be a part timer.
And i also believe out of humanity, OP’s boss gave a desperate person a job. Unfortunately that person does not have humanity to OP.
3
u/EuclideanEdge42 1d ago edited 23h ago
You’re just making excuses for bad hiring practices - firstly the boss hired people based on “charity” and “potential”, then offloaded the training to OP (whose JD probably didn’t include training), and then when it all goes south go on reddit to rant about gen Z for not having manners.
Edit: Downvote all you want, but when the boss & OP doesn’t change but the employees keep changing, maybe it’s time for OP’s boss to take a long hard look at his own company.

u/royal_steed 1d ago
I've seen some company struggling to hire such workers even with low requirement where there is no education requirement, just need to complete a mock task where is to write a stock take report in BM.
For example, they give a scenario, in the record there is 400 Apples, but when you do stock take, there is only 320 apples. Write a sentence (in BM) on how you are going to explain it to your boss.
It's a simple question but some of the candidate wrote it in "bahasa wicet" or "bahasa rempit" with so many short forms until no one can understand it.
I don't think you can call this racism when the basic requirement is a proper written BM.

Maybe Survivorship bias is not the right diagnosis? Maybe it’s more to do with Small Sample Size ?

Nope its definitely survivorship bias, all of these started from the Boomers and continued by the Gen X and early Millennials. Never heard of the silent generation complaining anything though probably because they were busy trying to survive. All things considered, it was never about sample size. Its always about me better than you.

Who would even consider hiring people without SPM? Unless it is in construction at general worker level. Even for the electrician or technician level, you need SPM with vocational skill. Best thing for those without SPM is to start a business which offer better chance in finding money
5
u/emptyVoid444 1d ago
nope, if you don't have SPM, it's better to register for a private exam, probably around RM250 for all basic subjects. SPM is like a job license, its useful until middle age. even ppl who never been to school can register for this exam. lebih baik mempunyai kesedaran walaupun lewat, jangan paksa diri untuk bukak bisnes semata mata takde spm
3
u/purplepants009 1d ago
Well.. the kid op is btching about didn't even took initiatives to take a private exam.
5
u/noiceonebro 1d ago
Bruh, we had a super experienced dinosaur who’s lazy af at his job. Turns out he’s just a lepasan SPM for what could be considered a very technical job. Education = more likelihood for better attitude. This is not a generational issue but education issue.
I also always hear old folks say “Biasa la tu, darah muda, garam tak ada, penuh api” when telling the story of how they fought back against bosses back in the day. Again, this shows me that it is not a generational issue but inexperience/immaturity issue.
6
u/makariosbios98 1d ago
I know OP has terrible experience with Gen Z but not all of us are like that. I am part of what they called "transition generation" born 1998. Was raised by Gen X, lived among Gen Y, and most of my friends are Gen Z. When I entered the work force, yes I was shit scared. But I made sure my manners and ethics are top notch. Because manners maketh man.
As I climbed up my career ladder, I became one of the most prominent employee in my office, yes a gen Z surprising, I know right, bringing in revenues better then years before, much higher. But I was paid just enough to survive. The pressure was immense, double digit work hours, no compensation, terrible culture, working on survival mode all the time. 3 years in I gave up. I left, with damages to my physical and mental, yeah sorry weak mental state, cuz after all the pressure from parents, peers, competition, ourself, coworkers, bosses, clients, god forbid we have anything left for ourselves right?
Adding to that the state of the economy, country and future that we would like to invest in, given that we have anything left from paying taxes, living cost and left overs for savings, which was left by our excellent for fathers, the boomers, X, and Y gens, definitely gives us immense motivation to further improve and give our 100 percent.
But all that said, not all of us gen Z are useless and freeloaders and mentally weak, but a huge percentage is, give the worlds rapid growth that no one can keep up with. And what our seniors that was supposed to guide us and help us grow always, you will never be enough. But what do I know, Im also a dumb, useless, mentally weak gen Z who only complains right?

Damn, and here I thought the job market is cooked which cause the difficulty in finding an employer. Turns out it's my generation that's ruined, like I'm a uni student so like 80% people there at least know manner, how to work with people (we don't talk about the rest of them).
Still, kinda crazy to believe people don't know how important it is to at least be respectful on the surface level.
4
u/Excellent-Yellow-883 1d ago
I’m quite confused with your title. It’s misleading. It should be Gen Z without SPM.
I guess most people without experience or SPM will be hard to find a job. There are more than 1 bad reason why they don’t have SPM, and very very few good reason(s). They are more likely to be rude too. Why are you surprised? My guess is that even those born long before 2004 without proper education or meaningful experience will likely be like that too.
I guess you don’t have sufficient working experience to meet people like this or work with people like this. Take it as a lesson learnt and be prepared.
4
u/BF4_medic 1d ago
If so hard to get work, join the military. 3 meals a day. No need SPM. Need hard work. The military offer many courses that can be useful when enter the civilian world.
Furthermore, military will teach you some manner if you have no manner at all.

Every generation will always have something bad to say about younger generation. Nonetheless, your experience dealing with a Gen Z prick is also valid. There are also some good Gen Zs that I found easy to be working with. Sometimes some of them need to be taught on certain things or manners, it doesn’t mean that they can’t grow from their mistakes. I’ve also dealt with older staffs with hot-headed attitudes and temper, it doesn't mean that all of them are like that.
3
u/CN8YLW 1d ago
That's just a small segment of the population. No SPM? Guaranteed these kids were raised like animals and allowed to run loose. That's almost always the reason why they've got a family that young. Suddenly you expect them to behave like civilized humans just because they need a paycheck from you? Please la, no such thing.
And hidden gems amongst these people are very rare, almost non existent. The good ones usually will open their own business, and wont be apply for min wage jobs.
3
u/hornyfish0705 16h ago
IMO dropouts/ those who didn’t bother with SPM are not a good representative of Gen Z as a whole. No matter what, there will be a crowd like this for each generation. I assume most younger Gen Z (2004 and above) who actually bothered with SPM, are busy with furthering their studies at the moment which is why you don’t see as many being hired at your work place.

There are some gems among them. I was speaking with a team of GenZ about the GenZ stare. Half the group were laughing about it and agreeing with it. But 2 of them stood out, they said, great that their generation did the stare. It gives them the opportunity to not do it, stand out and leapfrog them in the workplace.

The fall of Malaysia's education and job prospects comes from the inability to separate the achievers to the median settlers
Everyone likes to pretend very conservative and practice communism there, but it doesn't help us as a nation, and certainly will fail our future generations, what we are seeing, is the fallout of continous failures where intentional or not by government, societal factors, and own personal drive
I truly take pity on those that have to go "compete salary" with those that are okay-okay in person but nowhere near what is required of the position

Ive met similar people before. When i just started working there were a few of those who performed averagely while cherry picking work. I could feel those gossips they started abt me and sometimes talked shit. I screenshot details of file movements made by few of them and send it to our boss when they said my work was not up to standards during a meeting lol. Meeting was called the next day to address this issue. Boss just said to stop cherry picking work as they are being monitored without revealing any names. Their face was priceless and i smirked hopefully the hint would tell them it was me who raised the issue. They picked all the straight forward and easy cases while showing mediocre results and had the balls to call out a new joiner for “not being up to standards”. Difference is easy cases could take about 15m while harder ones could take 2-4 hrs. Performance bonus secured and thats all that matters. Those bs all stopped but i was just called ikut buku or something like that which idgaf.
I just hate those idiots who cant perform but potrays others as bad just so they could look good. Pathetic.
Anyway those ex colleagues are probably in their late 40s or 50s today so def not gen z and SPMless. My point is there are shitty people regardless of generation. Just that we all have different experiences with people. New hires nowadays tho it felt like they are so damm competitive and smart. Made me wonder if its because they grew up drinking synthetic/enhanced milk made by new technology. All those DHA+ etc etc. Or maybe our HR is doing a great job lol.

I found more ladies that were pregnant during school age being non malays, than that of malays tbh.....not to sound racist either, just from my experience meeting with people la.
But the already married by SPM thing...yea that sounds what some malay parents would allow. The kind who has the "anak kecik2 dah gatal, ah kahwinkan ajelah daripada memalukan keluarga kalau kena tangkap" thought process. I wish this was legally considered as child neglect.

Why would quality graduates apply to your company anyway? You are trying to extrapolate data based on the lowest and worst people, because those are the people you trying to attract.
Trust me, go to any MNC or large corporate and the Gen Z there are amazing.

You might just have hired trailer trash and not a rude gen z..... The former is on category of their own.

Good morning.
Good day.
Please.
Thank you.
May I.
If I may.
Gen Z needs to include above in their vocabulary. Not everything has to be in a rush. It goes a long way.

Coming from someone who is 2004, I’d like to say that every friends that I know who are 2004 and younger are either trying hard to improve through education or working hard to gain experience. However I must also say, the statement about SPM is very misleading because I myself grew up without an SPM due to family matters. Yet I tried my best to obtain an A-level certification that’s hardly recognised and found a job that’s willing to accept me despite my lack of education and I eventually started my diploma studies.
Now, 1. Judging someone as a red flag simply because of SPM simply isn’t going to work out. Education ≠ Usefulness. But willingness to learn and develop skills right now despite past failures is one of the best traits to have despite having no education. No matter what education one had, as long as you don’t learn and develop. You’re eventually gonna become useless in the workforce. To add on! Not every single job requires SPM or traditional education to be successful in it. Plenty of blue collar jobs (construction, handy man, etc) are either self learnt or learnt from working experience. I’m also willing to bet a lot of them end up earning more than you and me. Albeit, a tougher work life balance.
If You’re complaining that a non-SPM holder got hired. My question to you is where are all the SPM holders then? Not applying to your job at all? Clearly shows your pay grade is not attractive enough. You get what you are paying for
Let’s say you’re right, education is everything. You think people who are young and smart is willing to work in Malaysia for long? Rising cost of living but pay grade remains the same. They would much rather take the degree and work elsewhere or a foreign company where their value and future opportunity would be higher no?
So stop judging by Gen z or not Gen z. SPM or not SPM. Education cert is but a paper (except law, doctor and so on obviously) and maybe start judging by personal traits and skill set? Maybe then you’ll hire someone useful and young. Thanks 🙏

I’m a Gen Z. I cover work for 3 different dept.I argue if I feel some thing’s are not right or unnecessary. I don’t do my job with a smile but i make sure it’s done well. My current job isn’t even close to what I studied. Complain all you want about gen z but seems like the nature of your job itself isn’t something some first-class degree student would be inclined to do.

I’m in a corporate mnc company, and currently interviewing candidates for a social media position. Within 2 weeks, I’ve been ghosted by 3 GenZ candidates, ages around 24-27. They initially sound enthusiastic, and even requested for certain timing. They suittex their resumes, and we haven’t even had the first interview so I doubt it’s because of the pay or location or company review ( I’ve not seen any bad glassdoor reviews etc, but who knows ey)
These type of youngins give a bad name to GenZ. If you’re no longer interested, just drop a whatsapp saying so. It’s just common courtesy.
Sigh.

Assholes exist in every age wherever you go. As someone who deals with customers everyday, i met more rude and annoying people from older gen, yet people only nitpicking gen z all the time. As if people giving the pass for older gens to be a bitch just because they're not youngsters lol

Your boss is an idiot for tolerating this nonsense, show them the door and get a replacement, not like there is a shortage of them anyway

I agree not all though. But most I see and feel nowadays, gen z nowadays more demanding? Knows what they want? Not willing to do something they don’t like first to build their career? Idk how to put it . I just felt that way

GenZ knows everything, so its natural tht they feel entitled to everything. not necessarily a bad thing but humility are the lowest trait tht they have

Everyone has said a lot that I could've said the same thing. All I wanna say is just much as I understand where OP is coming from, that survivorship bias, hypocrisy and prejudice needs a lot of reflecting to do. Has nothing to do with taking SPM or not. In fact, there are just as many people who are 'educated' with a Degree and already more coddled and spoiled than the ones you say are non-SPM takers.
Your English writing for like half chunk of your rant says a lot already, you know. So I don't think you have much to say about judging someone for 'not taking SPM'.
And besides, you're taking part-timers, I'm kinda sure that the hiring requirements do not even ask for SPM or whatever academic qualification needed. You say your boss give chances to everyone - it sounds more like he's just taking whoever CAN work and willing to work but probably for as much pay as offered because 'better than nothing'.

What kinda job is it anyways? And why are you just limiting yourself to genz to hire?
