Frazier vs Quarry 1. One of the best and brutal display of inside fighting

Quarry was out with something to prove here, instead of boxing and countering Joe he decided to go against his critics and take the fight to Frazier. They thought he was a counter puncher above all else so he proved people wrong, but it led to his demise either way.

Pride is the costliest sin in the ring
it'd take a a forest's worth of paper to list all the fights where brave fighters lost because their balls outweighed their brains. This is a notable entry, but one of thousands, nonetheless

This fight really shows how effective Frazier was. Quarry won the first round but after that Joe just dragged him into deeper and deeper waters.

What the heck are these guys made of? Incredible resilience, conditioning, and resolve. Those body shots that Quarry was landing were vicious and they barely even fazed Frazier.

Crazy to watch the these guys just stand head to head take/ give a beating. That commitment to an inside fight is so interesting to watch and brutal to watch. As an aside, it shows what a monster George Foreman was to knock down Frazier so many times when you see Frazier could take so many punches and keep coming with a regular heavyweight.

Why would you go to the inside and trade with a shorter and bulkier guy? From a coaching perspective, you would have to be furious with Quarry. Dude deliberately put himself at a disadvantage. That's just as dumb as watching Fundora bang on the inside instead of doing what he's doing now: using his height and box from range. It's good to be able to do both and fight at both ranges at times (times meaning switching it up or be able to handle yourself for let's say 20 seconds on the inside until you create space and box from the outside again), as the taller man, you would want to fight at range for most of the fight tho.

Mentioning Fundora in the same breath as these fighters is hilarious ffs you could have mentioned somebody else lmao.

I think it's a fair reference as it's a current boxing example of a guy being known for doing the same mistake without the opponent forcing him to fight like that

He’s one of the worst belt holders in boxing he got lucky in the first Tszyu fight and he beat Lubin any good counter puncher with power will spark him honestly i just don’t rate him.

Cant be any tougher than when Quarry was taking it from Frazier in either fight

That was one of the craziest first rounds I’ve seen. Some nowadays for sure. But wow

This was very brutal but neither is trying to control the other much. If you want a master class at infighting watch Duran.

When I watch Frazier I feel like I'm getting tired on his behalf. It's not just the bob & weave, his active frames, parries and guards all have very explosive movements to them.

Frazier has such efficiency of movement when it comes to his slips and counters that are just beautiful to watch

It was very difficult to make highlights of this fight as Smokin' Joe was throwing punches non-stop. Even Quarry fired back in earlier rounds. And these are heavyweights. Opposite of tracksters like Bivol, Shakur, Haney, Scull etc. Alas, What a time boxing has come to. Only Usyk is the saving grace but he also has 1-2 fights in him.

I'd like to see more fighters who're able to fight intuitively inside like Jerry Quarry, but I don't want to see more fighters end up like Jerry either.

You don't pay them enough money to get brain damage. It's good for them to fight smartly. The fact that you put Bivol in the same list as Scull says more about yourself.

The boxers I named are paid more than 5 million per fight. That's more than enough for the running they do. Even bivol isn't that exciting of a boxer. It is better to watch a pendulum of a watch than to see him fight. Just uses the jabs and keeps on bouncing. Nothing exciting.

I miss seeing fights like this. You’ll never see anybody now days dare to fight on the inside like these two.

Quarry was a tough son-of-a-bitch and helps to prove that the 1970s was the greatest era in heavyweight boxing history. The mid-tier guys were as dangerous as the first tier guys of any other era.
