Highlights Throwback Thursday: The Eric Metcalf game 1993
10/24/1993: The Bill Belichick led Browns defeated the Steelers 28-23 behind Eric Metcalf’s incredible performance of 245 all purpose yards including 2 punt returns for touchdowns of 75 and 91 yards

I miss punt returners that had skills. Been a long time now since Cribbs

League completely took that element out of the game. Metcalf was a massive reason that became and remained a Browns fan.

Punters and special teams coaches took that element out of the game.
It seems like the only time punts even get returned nowadays is if the punter’s rhythm is off and he hits a bad ball.
Or if he hits it too well.

Punta haven't been changed at all from a rule standpoint. Kickoffs are a different story

Loved the double-juke against the Bengals on MNF that became a part of the intro for a while. The second angle here was what was in the intro, not the one above, but the quality is poor.

It blows my mind that I live in a time where we watched this on TV at the time and didn’t think it looked like absolute shit, and now I can sit on the toilet and watch this on my Star Trek PADD and comment how this looks like absolute dogshit.
Tech has changed so much in my time, crazy.

This video is highly compressed, which makes it look even worse. Sure, things weren't HD back then, but the signal was clear and the picture was much better than this video.

That’s the year he benched Bernie for “diminished skills“ at 29 years old. They were in first place at the time and Bernie’s last play was a touchdown that he drew in the dirt. Apparently that pissed Belichick off.

I’m a Niner fan who grew up in the Bay Area. I follow most nfl team subs which is why I’m here.
Metcalf was one of my absolute favorites and it was such a treat when we actually got to watch him play out here. I had his trading card and everything back then.

Eric Metcalf used to stop by the Browns Backers bar in Seattle. Terrible teams. Terrible seasons. Awesome dude! I think he coached football for one of the highschools around here.

Is that Nev Chandler’s call on the second touchdown? I miss that dude

u/foxmag86 Jul 10 '25
Yep that was him. Even though I've really only known Jim Donovan, I really love listening to Nev Chandlers calls. Brought a lot of excitement, plus the audio being a bit staticky and crackly adds to the nostalgia.

I think I was at this game.

I was there as well. I was 13. My family had season tickets for decades. One of the best memories I have as a kid. Sitting in the upper deck, 50 yard line, front row. With my old man.

I was at this game, and it was one of the best sports memories and memories I ever had with my dad - and the thousands of screaming strangers, hugging and high-fiving everyone. It was one of the most magical things I’d ever witnessed. Also, fuck the Steelers!

The way he moves the ball from his right arm to his left in the first one is so smooth.

2 things.
1 - I miss the excitement of a punt (or kick return). Today's game just doesn't have that electricity.
2 - Nev Chandler's voice on that call. We really have had some great ones in Cleveland.

Over 30 years ago I got his jersey and then he got traded. Never got to wear it to a game when he was a Brown but I still wear it to this day. My favorite jersey

Perhaps a dumb question but anyone know what the #5 at midfield signifies?

It’s an interlocking “C” and “B”. There was some weird branding in the 90s.
This video is better quality and you can see it better.

Fun story - I went to this game with 3 friends, one of whom was a Steelers fan. He also put $600 on the Steelers. I don’t think he’s bet on sports since

This dude made a little kid a lifelong Browns fan on that day. It’s been a rough go of it, but it boils down to one game.
