Basic Black: Arthur Black interviews CBC correspondent Ann Medina in 1990

The CBC archives have little in the way of Basic Black shows, a long-running Saturday morning radio program hosted by Arthur Black.

I recently came across this piece from June 1990 in which the host, Arthur Black, interviews former CBC foreign correspondent Ann Medina about reporting overseas.

For those who remember Arthur, and miss his voice, have a listen.

I have a cassette of my dad being interviewed on Basic Black in 1989, one of my cherished items. The rule in our car on road trips was CBC in the morning and music in the afternoon.

At least one a year, I send a message to CBC asking them to put the Basic Black and Morningside archives online... It hasn't worked yet./

I’ve tried this too. Got a reply citing copyright issues tied to not just the interviewer and interviewee but also the production staff. They’d all have to sign on rebroadcast rights.

I came across Arthur Black’s book, also called Basic Black, the other day. It pre-dates the Basic Black radio show and was a compilation of stories he shared on the CBC Thunder Bay as host of the noon show. I can hear him whenever I read a story from the book.

Pedant alert: "George St. John Quimby... in LONdon."

George St. John Quimby is how I learned that pronunciation of that name. Years later, I met someone whose first name was St. John. I imagine he just spends all his time correcting the pronunciation.

Miss hearing Arthur’s voice. I sent him a short letter as a young kid and he kindly responded by sending me a short note on a signed postcard. It meant so much to me.
