I didn't realize they can go for $10/can. I'm not that big on tuna so I passed on it but maybe I'll be back. How do you eat it? With mayo? I found canned tuna to be dry and chalky.

Krill?!

I had a tin of krill meat in my Tinned Fish Club box that I’m just now getting around to eating.

It was unironically delicious. And holy cow these macros are amazing.

The krill itself looks and smells exactly like shredded crab.

Cooked it up in a pan with some very stinky kimchi, some carrot ribbons, garlic, lime pepper, and chili powder. Served it over some nasi kuning rice/fava beans that I make in my rice maker. Topped the whole thing with a little rice vinegar and chili crisp.

For the rice I put 1 cup rice, half a cup bobs red mill fava beans, half a cup of coconut milk, two cups water, and this nasi kuning (Indonesian fragrant rice) mix packet I get at my local Asian market. Stick it in the cooker until it’s done.

Amazing combo.

That combo, I think, would be great with just about any tinned fish (mussels FOR SURE).

Anyway, I didn’t try the krill for a long time because to me krill=whale food but damn it was good šŸ‘šŸ¼

I included a picture of the rice flavor mix I used in case anyone wants to use it.

Any love for canned cod liver? How do you like to eat it?

I just tried it for the first time and it’s much milder than I expected! It’s very similar to salmon fat. I split the liver in two and ate it with corn chips over two days, then added the oil to soup on the third day. ChatGPT says to only do this once per month to avoid vitamin A toxicity. It’s great for Vitamin D and Omega 3 as well!

Review Alalunga mackerel in olive oil

Such high quality. The fish is fatty and delicate, just about standing up to delicate removal with chopsticks. The fish is flavoursome and perfectly seasoned, and the oil is some of the best I’ve had from a tin. Are simply with short grain rice.

An elegant and ultra tasty tin of fish (10/10).

Review Nice Cans Sardines in Tomatoes and Peppers

When I see the word "tomato" on a can, I assume I'll see a red, slightly thick tomato sauce. This one surprised me: Upon opening, I got an immediate whiff of tomato, garlic, onion and other good scents. But the sauce is not bright tomato red -- there's more olive oil than tomato, and the blend of seasonings is exactly right. Excellent, firm Portuguese pilchards. So, so good with sharp cheddar on whole wheat toast for breakfast! šŸ˜‹

I see from the label that Nice Cans are produced by Jose Gourmet, so I'm not surprised that I love this, yet it is unlike any other JG/ABC+/etc can I've had. Nice Cans sardines in tomatoes and peppers immediately went on my list of all-time favorites! I got mine from FishNook (which has great customer service and some new products recently… gearing up for my next order).

Review Quick reviews of 2 frou-frou canned trouts: Jose Gourmet and ABC+ with Onion Relish

Bought both of these cans for extravagant prices as a one-off treat, and I'm evaluating them in that context.

First up: Jose Gourmet Smoked Trout Fillet in EVOO. A high-quality smoked trout in olive oil. The smoke flavor is really pronounced here, and trout fillet is so firm it has an almost dry texture, as if it's on the first step of its journey to being trout jerky. The flavor is excellent, but as a lover of the famously tender Cole's Trout, the texture is not to my taste.
Would I eat it again?: Sure? Do I regret buying it at market price?: Yeah. How cool is the packaging?: Amazing.

Next: ABC+ Trout with Relish. The relish here is caramelized onions in vinegar with spices including curry powder, mustard, garlic, and cayenne. The fish is firm to about the same degree as Trader Joe's Trout - not as firm as the Jose Gourmet. The flesh is dyed orange, presumably by the curry powder. Unlike the Jose Gourmet, which seems to be doing a pretty basic thing with very high-quality ingredients, this can is, in my limited experience, totally unique. The relish and the spice-soaked oil impart a mildly spicy, intensely umami flavor to the fish.

Would I eat it again?: Yeah, but not routinely. Do I regret buying it at market price?: Nope. Like the Fishwife Fly by Zhing Salmon, this is one of those cans that's obviously absurdly priced, but also such a unique experience that I'd occasionally buy it anyway. How cool is the packaging?: I can see why ABC+ designs are considered iconic by some, but I honestly hate this monochrome paper cutout shit.

Finally got around to trying this tin from my RTG order a few months back. Served on crackers with some pickled carrots as a topper. Wanted to lean into the Nordic vibes so I paired it with some Icelandic aquavit. The flavor profile might not be for everyone, but I thought it was a very tasty combo!

Happy to be able make a post that is the polar opposite of my post about Fishwife Smoked Chili Crisp Atlantic Salmon.

This product solid, and the value is tremendous.

I got both cans for $3 dollars a piece at an Eastern European supermarket last weekend when visiting family in central NJ.

Both cans had modest smoke flavor, and had a nice neutral oil. The cuts of salmon were firm, skin on, and in one solid piece in each can. The skin removed easily but was fully scaled and could have easily been left on and enjoyed.

This doesn’t have the purported pizzazz of the Fishwife product, but was just as good over rice with a spoonful of chili crisp and splash of tamari.

I wish I bought a case!

Currently in Austria and find Nuri for 3€, so I grabbed 8 cans. Never had that famous brand before, because in my country they are like 5€ per can. So happy for them and can’t wait till I try them. Which ones are your favorites?

Question

Where can I get some good, high quality sardines? I’ve been eating wild planet sardines in water and they taste terrible. Normally I will mix sardines with 2 eggs and tons of hot sauce but there is an aftertaste from the sardines I don’t like. I’m in New York if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance

Tins, General Pics & Memes Learning to enjoy canned fish at 31 years old

Post image

It took me until I was in my 20s to tolerate canned tuna. I've been following this sub for years waiting for my moment to join the club, but have been held back by my fear of skin, bones, and all of the other "creepy" bits sitting in a room temperature can of seafood. I tend to be very picky and I'm learning how to tolerate and even enjoy new foods like this.

And now, at 2:30 am, I finally gathered the courage to crack open a can of Season boneless skinless mackerel in olive oil. As long as I don't look down at what I'm eating, it's heavenly and surprisingly rich + tender.

I think it will be a very long time before I'm comfortable enough to eat fish with skin and/or bones, but I'm very excited to try new brands and flavors. I'm awful at eating enough protein and supplementing enough iron, so this is going to become a regular part of my meal rotation- especially with its affordable price.

Just stumbled upon this sub. Has to be one of the weirdest I found yetšŸ˜‚ sharing my dinner from tonight - my newly discovered love of sardines

I ran to the shop earlier to rebuy ingredients to eat this again today. I had made it for the first time last night (2 pics on the right) and fell in love. Took 5 minutes to make. Toasted bread, butter, sardines, parsley, lemon zest + juice, olive oil, and 1 anchovy each.

Out of curiosity where do people on this sub come from? Majority from US? I see a lot of sardine brands I've never seen before. How much does an average tin cost where you're from? UK here, a tin from sainsburys is 60pšŸ˜ŽšŸ˜ø

Dreadful news. I’ve had three in-process orders cancelled this weekend by three different sellers in Spain, France, and the UK. Tariff troubles are gonna get worse for all things fish-related, I’m afraid.

Review Siesta Mackerel with Yuzo Kosho

Post image
21 Upvotes

Picked up a tin of mackerel in yuzu kosho sauce (can’t remember where, sometime in the last 6 months) and finally got around to trying it today.

Surprisingly great—bright, spicy, citrusy sauce that really elevated the fish. I usually don’t go for mackerel, but this tin won me over. Served it on matzoh with pickles, and it’s hands down the best mackerel tin I’ve had.

Wish I remembered where I bought it, because I’d definitely stock up.

Wife and kids love sardines. Have wanted to try them for a while but hesitant due to fishy smell. Any good ways to try them for a newbie? Have fishwife preserved in lemon or Bar harbor petite.
