Cardiff Uni accommodation – What’s Senghennydd Court really like?

I’m an incoming international postgrad (Journalism, Media & Culture) and I just found out I’ll be living in Senghennydd Court, Ensuite Plus. Couple of things I’m not 100% sure about:

Are the bedding/kitchen packs provided by the uni actually clean and worth using, or should I just plan to buy my own? Does “Ensuite Plus” mean private bathroom and private kitchen, or just the bathroom and then a shared kitchen? What’s the general vibe of Senghennydd Court? (noise, location, people, etc.)

If anyone has lived there before, would love to hear your honest thoughts. Thanks in advance! 🙌

I lived in Senghennydd Court for my first year of uni. It’s really not as bad as people say it is. It’s called ‘Senghetto’ colloquially but it’s actually fine. Is it the height of luxury? No. But it’s no worse than Talybont really, and is cheaper.

It’s also in a really good location. It’s incredibly close to the City Centre (and thus the Journalism building), the Students’ Union, and all of the Cathays nightlife. My entire time there, I was never really disturbed too badly by people coming back from nights out. Potentially the loudest thing you’ll have to deal with is the trains passing by as Senghennydd is very close to the railway, but TFW are in the process of replacing their old, noisy trains with new quieter ones, so hopefully that won’t be too much of a problem.

En-suite just means you’ve got a private bathroom. Any bedding and other stuff supplied by the uni will be clean and new, but I can’t speak for whether or not they’re any good as I didn’t receive any.

If you have any other questions, I’ll be more than happy to help!

Thank you for your detailed answer. Reading a lot of people’s comments online really makes me worried. I’m even thinking about moving to an off-campus apartment.

Which comments in particular? I’d be happy to let you know if you should worry or not.

They are diesel trains but they are far, far quieter than the old ones!

You raise a good point that it’s not especially close to any supermarkets, but the walk to Lidl is perfectly manageable if you want to save a bit of money. It’s only about ten minutes away.

The ensuite rooms are in the middle of senghennydd court - it's the blocks on the edges that have most of the noise from the trains - and after the first week or so I slept through it all anyway.

You can club together with a few others and have a big supermarket shop delivered - though you do have to then schlep everything over to your flat from the entrance.

Oh my God, my sleep is very bad. I am still taking medicine to improve my sleep, so I am very sensitive to noise. Can I ask when the train noise usually occurs? Is there a louder noise at night?

If it's still the same as when I went there, the train noise will stop nearly completely about 11pm. There are also bells from the clock at City Hall but again they stop after midnight I think? You will adjust and sleep through them in no time. If you're worried about your medication not being effective enough make sure you have some ear plugs. But don't worry, people have a lot to say but I found Senghennydd to be great, the shortest possible walk into town and really sociable. All your flatmates will be post-grads too and you'll make lots of friends and have lots of fun.

Ah, then I feel more at ease. I am really a little anxious now, facing an unknown environment and roommates, especially since my English is not that good. I hope they will not dislike my English, and I also hope that the roommates will not have friction over the use of the kitchen🥹

Thank you~ Is the quality of the bedding good? Do I need to buy it again?

Its okay for its quality. Honestly even if it wasnt i woulf still suggst you get the bedding pack because its very difficult to go out and buy all the bedding essentials on the first day

Haha, it’s like this. I feel more reassured if the quality is good. I just want to have a good sleep on the first day💤

Hi, I’m not sure about the building itself but the area is good! There is a bridge nearby that goes over the railway and takes you through the engineering building and to newport/city roads and toward the city centre. Feel free to ask any questions that you may have! I studied in Cardiff Uni for my undergraduate

Great, I do have a lot of questions to ask. Is this apartment far from the School of Communication on foot?

I stayed in Senghennydd Court in my first year of PhD. The bedding packs provided were new and sealed and good to use. I still use the duvet. They also provided some pots and pans. En-suite means private bathroom and shared kitchen. My rooms window was towards the road but still the only time it was noisy was with the windows open at 3am on a weekend or party night. It’s a small space so be mindful of that. If you want to chat more or want pictures I can send you of what my room looked like so you have an idea

The packs provided by the uni took a while to get last year but they should be improved for this year. I still use the things i got from them currently

In general, seng court will have some people that are richer and posher, but overall it really isn't completely awful, the bins get rats and sometimes the train is really loud but it's super close to the city, meaning it's incredibly easy to go shopping for anything. It's also a short walk to the student union and from there you can go to the CSL, so honestly it's rather convenient for a first year accomm i'd say

No idea about the ensuite plus thing but the ensuites at seng hall and court are pretty good, better than some of the others i've seen

Oh my God, are there really going to be rats? I also want to ask if there will be someone in charge to manage some issues in the apartment, such as aging electrical appliances, heating issues, etc. Are the cooking utensils provided clean? Is the kitchen big? Usually it is shared by several people.

Yes, there's rats, but they'll usually be by the bins at night and aren't the kind to attack unprovoked - I had a few run right near me when I would go put the bins out, but I never got attacked by one ever, they are massive though and usually are in the Cathays area at night

If you have any heating issues or issues with appliances, you have to call the reception during business hours or file a report and they come and fix it (though from my experience it's better to pester them than file the report)

Cooking utensils aren't provided unless you get a kitchen pack from the uni - they'll be brand new, so you'll have to disinfect them yourself but they will be clean. The kitchen is usually pretty big, but it honestly depends on which flat you end up in - and yes, it's a shared kitchen

what's the general vibe of Senghennydd court?

There's a reason why it's nicknamed "Senghetto"/"the Ghetto"

Dear friends, I am from China, so my English is not very good. If there are any grammar problems in my reply, I hope you can correct me and forgive me. I really hope to make friends with you, thank you!
