Project Advice Help figuring out if I can install speakers here

Post image

First time poster - installing KEF Ci4100QL speakers in these cutouts. When using my stud finder it seemed like the entire wall was a stud, so I decided to just make the cutouts and figure out the rest later.

I’ve deduced these two areas are not foundational, but I’m still worried about cutting out the wood. What exactly is going on behind this fireplace?!

The first thing you should do is lower the TV to a respectable height on a different wall in the room.

People bitch so much about tv height. Mine is probably similar, but it’s just about perfect for me when I’m sitting in my recliner fully reclined with a pillow behind my neck. Very comfortable and no issues. It was mounted high on purpose so it was also out of grubby kid hand range.

Those are the king studs and trimmers for the fireplace opening. With that many it would be indicative of a load bearing wall.

Thanks for your response. Is there any way to cut into these about 2” and reinforce with something? Or am I truly SOL

The stud pack on the left is more than likely holding weight. I would not cut them out. But shit you need speakers next to your tv that already looks shitty above your fireplace Cut away.

I just measured it out and it is fairly close to the center of our bedroom upstairs. Our kitchen is behind the wall and there are another set of studs on that wall that seemingly go all the way up to the attic. I also looked below and there's nothing below either, seems like an independent stud pack with another stud directly to the right, behind, as well as to the left where that outlet is installed. Does this change your opinion at all?

If that’s where the TV will stay I’d look into a pair of slim on-wall speakers to cover the damage. I’ve been shopping for some myself - my top contenders are the ELAC OW-V41, RBH 55-iw, and DALI Oberon On-Wall.

Yeah I wanted to do Q4 Metas but they “have to be in the wall or ceiling”

Nope you can't even put a TV up there. It's the law.

Lolol well you’ll be glad to know I have patched and painted the cutouts. The tv unfortunately has to stay, wife’s orders

It is possibly sheeted with plywood under the drywall if it all seems solid. Are those exposed areas definitely studs? Drill a hole and see how thick they seem. If just plywood I would cut it.

Also, tv is too high.

The right side is pretty thin yes, like 1-1.5”. The 3 on the left are more concerning to me
