Job Search ExxonMobil Internship

I really want an ExxonMobil internship. I'm going to be a junior, and I have a 3.94 GPA, was a TA for chem 1 and 2, and had prior work experience in project management. I am doing research in fluid dynamics and electrokinetics, although I am trying to pursue other research opportunities because I don't like it, and I am going to be an officer for AIChE at my school (American Institute of Chemical Engineers). How likely am I to get an internship, and what do I need to do to get one?

Check if Exxon comes to your schools job fair (if they have one.) That's probably your best shot if so.

This is it. Unfortunately they don’t hire from as many schools as they used to. If they don’t come to your school, you can look into attending another school’s career fair. Schools I know they hire from, Texas, A&M, GT, Florida, Cornell, MIT, LSU, Auburn, some others. Believe Michigan, OH State, Texas Tech. Also conferences like SWE, NSBE, SHPE.

Okay, thank you, that's a great starting point for sure. I never thought about attending another school's career fair.

Yes, they do. The problem is that they only come in the fall. And so I feel like I don't have enough time to secure a summer internship because I always feel like I'm lacking something.

You say you're going to be a junior next year right? So are you looking for summer internships (summer 2026) or maybe a co-op? The fall is when most bigger companies hire their interns so you have lots of time, no?

Yes, I am going to be a junior next year. But I'm just not sure, since the fall is coming up, and therefore the career fair is too, if I'm a good enough applicant.

Ah gotcha, I misunderstood. I think you're in a really good spot. You have a high GPA, research experience, and leadership. That's on the higher end of what most people in my class had when I was applying.

If you practice real well for job fair and interviews I think you've got a good shot

Thank you so much! And I'm pretty new at this, how exactly do I practice for the job fairs and interviews?

Job fair is a little trickier to prep for but does kind of blend into interview prep. There may be some threads here where others give more advice.

What will generally happen is you go up to them, hand them your perfected resume. They'll likely be looking at it while you talk. You want to have a minute or so "elevator pitch" prepared and practiced, detailing what year you are, what you've done (experience), and what you want (internships/full time). Try to be cool, confident, natural and memorable.

Make sure you have several questions on the role and perhaps the company. Know what they're hiring for or what role, if they post that info.

See if your school does mock interviews/interview help, practice STAR question format (a time when you...), and have several "stories" from your experience that you can spin into answering several different questions, which can be useful for job fair too. May be some technical questions but probably not that many, or any at all, for internship interviews. Lots of info on this stuff in this sub too.

It helped me to ask the seniors what they did for job fair or if they have any advice

They only come in the Fall for everybody. They will have interns picked out before the end of the year.
