Research Can someone explain how viscosity is considered a fluid property?

I understand that viscosity has to do with how thick or resistant a fluid is to flow, but I’m a little confused on why it’s called a fluid property. What exactly makes it a property of the fluid and not flow? Would love a simple breakdown or analogy if anyone has one. Thanks!

Research Where to buy research chemicals? Seeking cost-effective alternatives

Hey Everyone,

I’ve been ordering research chemicals for a while now, and I’m getting fed up with how expensive suppliers like Sigma can be. Their stuff is great, but the prices are really eating into our budget.

Does anyone know of good alternatives where I can get quality chemicals without breaking the bank? I’m open to trying new suppliers or any platforms that might make the whole process easier and more affordable.

Any tips would be awesome. Thanks!

Research Practicality and economic viability of replacing bisphenols with lignin?

Recent closures in pulp and paper industry have made me think about whether these pulp and paper plants could pivot to making lignin as a bisphenols replacement in plastic especially with the growing awareness of bisphenols harmful effects. Do you guys have any insights on how practical this would be and if it could become a cost effective alternative in the future? What would it take?

Research Most historic or favorite Chemical Engineering equations?

I graduated with my ChemE degree 8+ years ago and would like to get a tattoo to memorialize my time in college. I have a few equations in mind, but would love to hear what others think are good ideas. Looking for something with a lot of meaning in the chemical engineering world.

Other tattoo ideas outside of equations are also welcome. Maybe a cool P&ID, etc.

Research Sodium Hypochlorite Generator for My Pool - Need Advice!

Hello!

First of all, don't know if this is the right place to ask this, so if its not just let me know.

I want to make a Sodium Hypochlorite maker for an ocean water pool. My aim is to make 250 liters of 12% sodium hypochlorite daily (we can adjust the hours a day the machine is on). I am planning on making the sodium hypochlorite with a tub of fresh water and industrial salt. I was looking into how much power I would need and the size of anodes and cathodes. I understand Mixed Metal Oxide (MMO) coated Titanium Anodes and Plain Titanium Cathodes are the standard for durability and efficiency.

From what I have researched, Here are some options I can do:

  1. If I run the system for about 22.5 hours per day, I'd need a power supply capable of around 1125 Amperes. This would require approximately 0.6 square meters of active electrode surface area.
  2. If I aim for about 10.8 hours per day, I'd need a power supply around 2500 Amperes. This would need an electrode area to roughly 1.44 square meters.
  3. If I run it for 6.0 hours per day, I'd need a power supply capable of around 4500 Amperes. This would need an electrode area of roughly 2.4 square meters.

Obviously, 4500A at 6V or whatever is almost impossible to get. Option 2 is possible for me though. I just want to know if the numbers are right and if there is anything else I should know. I already know about the adequate ventilation and normal safety procedures.

Thank you all for your help!

Research How do you make sure your construction leads aren’t dead ends?

I'm in sales for a construction company and lately we’ve wasted so much time chasing projects that ended up being not available anymore. I’ve been told there are platforms that use project tracking or AI to filter active opportunities. Has anyone here found a tool or process that actually improves lead quality I think I've heard of building radar? Or is it just part of the game in this industry?

Research Is this an appropriate forum to ask a concise set of questions about microplastics?

Hi engineers,

Basic information about what we do and don't know re microplastics and safety is hard to come by right now, even for a relatively experienced researcher. I mean questions about, for example

- whether commonly used food-storage products (like the takeout soup containers I used to reuse) are likely to shed plastic all the time or only when they get hot or scratched.

- whether silicone products actually behave differently than other "food-safe" plastics with regard to degradation with normal use.

- whether freezing in plastic is meaningfully safer than using it in other ways.

Some simply haven't been directly investigated yet. It's also difficult to vet the array of online sources offering directly contradictory advice.

I thought this sub _might_ be the perfect place to drop a bullet list of questions, but don't want to annoy. What do you say?

Research Energy harvesting ideas

I’ve been reading about Nikola Tesla, and ever since, I can’t stop thinking about new ideas. I’m 42, just an adult with a curious mind, looking to explore some chemical research with like-minded folks. I’ve been thinking about harnessing energy through natural reactions—possibly using elements or particles that are already constantly hitting Earth from space. Are any of these ideas practical? Maybe, maybe not. But I’d love to start a conversation and see where it takes us.

Research how to do literature surveys and get into research

So im currently in my junior year and weve been given the chance to undergo a research project of sorts. it seems straightforward where each student has a guide and will work under some research field of that guide. Im gonna be doing my research on photocatalysis specifically for C-N coupling and C-C coupling. I get the topics and the theory behind these projects. where im struggling is how do i gather papers and previous research on this work. im not asking for links to similiar papers or such. Im confused as to like what is the method behind starting the literature review. do i just go and surf the net. which sites would be helpful. is there some methodology behind doing such readings. any insights would be really helpful. Thanks!

Research Help with Microfluidics Chip

Hi everyone, I need some help regarding the fabrication of microemulsions.

I'm doing oil in water emulsion (PVA in water as surfactant and polymer in chloroform as organic phase). I have a system of pumps from which I can have strict control over either the flows or pressure applied on the two phases. The biggest problem I have is that, even when flows are completely stable, I end up with bursts of particles instead of a continuous flow.

The chip I'm employing is this https://darwin-microfluidics.com/products/t-26-multi-size-droplet-generator-glass-chip/?srsltid=AfmBOoqbFebsqKLWgrgU3d7N4Vq58TQaGekYM5yfXoSpWxBDCG3pQl5e

Any kind of help is highly appreciated, thanks!

Research Is My AI-Driven Smart Carbon Capture & Utilization (CCU) Project Actually Valuable to the Chemical Industry?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm a chemical engineering student working on a project that combines AI with carbon capture and utilization (CCU). The goal is to create a smart AI-powered system that can potentially assist industries in optimizing carbon capture and utilization.

What I’ve done so far:

My AI model currently predicts carbon capture efficiency percentage and utilization efficiency percentage based on different process/catalyst parameters.

I’ve integrated catalysts like MOFs, Zeolites, and enzyme-based systems in the model framework for capturing CO₂.

The long-term vision is to create an intelligent assistant that can recommend optimal process parameters, material choices, or even suggest retrofits for existing industrial CCU systems.

My doubts:

Is this direction actually valuable to the chemical or energy industries?

Am I just reinventing the wheel, or is this something that could contribute meaningfully to decarbonization efforts?

How can I make this project more impactful or useful for industry or academia?

Would really appreciate any insights, feedback, or even critiques on the direction I’m heading in.

Thanks!

Research I need help choosing a material for high pressure and temperature applications

Hi,

I am a materials engineer working in a high pressure research laboratory. I am looking for a translucent material that can withstand 150bar at 100C without deforming or going cloudy. I have already tried polycarbonate (fail). My next go to option was standard borosilicate glass however I have no experience with the ability of BSG to withstand high pressure, and I would rather not find out the hard way lol. I know saffire glass would work however that will be incredibly expensive and therefore isn't ideal. Any suggestions would be appreciated greatly!

Research Phosphate Reactions and Local Chemical Changes

Phosphate groups, like those in ATP, are essential in energy transfer and enzyme control. During reactions like phosphorylation, the local area around the reaction changes including the charge, the way water molecules arrange, and how nearby molecules behave.

My question is Could these local changes last a bit longer than the reaction itself and slightly affect what happens next in the same spot?

Research Who to reach out to?

Hello there Reddit people. Not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I happened to stumble on some products being produced by an NGO during the conferences. We got to speaking with this young lady who works there and she shared how after doing research for these products they'd like to approach one of the beauty companies within to gain funding and recognition and for the company to market them as their own as they can't engage in selling of them. We struck an agreement that I'd be the broker, and seek out this partnership. Well, let me just say it's been quite a hurdle. I tried LinkedIn in. People don't respond. I don't want to give out all details until I'm certain they are onboard and I won't be cut off. Seeking these professionals working in marketing and RnD is quite difficult. Can I get suggestions on how to approach this unique opportunity?

Research Can I use an Electrochemical Impedance Spectrometer (EIS) to test the electrical conductivity of a solid sample (e.g., graphite powder)?

I'm working with graphite powder as a component for an aluminum air fuel cell/aluminum air battery and need to determine its electrical conductivity. Would EIS be a suitable method for this, or are there better alternatives?

Any advice on sample preparation (e.g., pelletizing vs. loose powder) or potential pitfalls would be greatly appreciated!
