i never understood nuclear/atomic tourism. it seems absurd and moronic to me and i just don't get why you'd voluntarily try your luck like that. idgaf if the disaster site is no longer considered "dangerous" bc you know what doesn't care either? cancer.
Yeah you have no idea if you’d end up with cancer years later. I’d love to visit Pripyat but there’s no way I’d go there without knowing it was safe which it most likely is not.
Apparently, it can be pretty safe if you go with an experienced guide, a good Geiger counter and don't touch anything. There are still highly irradiated places in Pripyat, but in general - if you're there for a few hours and very careful, it's OK to visit.
I wouldn't go there because I already got enough of this shit being born in a town less than 100 km from there. I was 7 when the exploaion happened.
Not a lot. I remember we learned about the explosion from my uncle who worked there and was evacualted from Pripyat. I remember the very laconic news reports that followed (one of them was shown in the second episode). I remember that no one initially told us about the dangers of radiation.
Is not that safe, especially because some tourist guides don't have the proper certification and might have the potential to be a scam.
There are certain companies that might do this kind of tours but will make you sign a lot of paper to release them from any responsibility related to health complications.
I like how so many retards are upvoting AlexDub12. Ok guys - you go ahead and visit Pripyat if you think it's safe. I'm comfortable where I am, thanks.
There was a guy who went to Pripyat and took some photographs inside an area that had plutonium samples.
As you can imagine, he went with a person who seemed to be one of the certified guides.
It turns out that this guy (the photographer/tourist) ended up being diagnosed with leukemia. I'm looking out for the article and I will update my comment if I find it.
Tourism there is heavily regulated. Other cores that didn't explode were still operated for decades after the disaster. A massive construction project was carried out to build the new sarcophagus.
It's not like you'd be staying in the exclusion zone, you'd go through a checkpoint and drive through it to have a look at the places. The checkpoint is there to make sure that people don't try to go where they shouldn't.
You're not trying your luck if you don't go in to obviously dangerous zones, which would be very hard to attempt without getting promptly arrested.
cancer
You're right, cancer doesn't care. That's why the tourism is heavily regulated to minimise the dose of radiation that you do receive. Could the small dose you receive manifest in to cancer later on? Sure, but by the time it does you may already have died from another naturally occurring cancer.
I do. But it’s a necessary source of exposure. No one’s FORCING you to travel to Chernobyl. However, to lead a somewhat normal life, I have to be exposed to the sun.
The point is you're being irrationally anti-science here. A trip to Chernobyl gives the same dose of radiation as just spending 2 days going about your normal life outside, or 2 hours in an airplane. There is no danger, and you're acting as if it were an obvious choice.
Its not anti-science. I find it to be a useless risk.if you knew an area was notorious for gang activity and murder, even if you were told there’s “hardly” any murders there anymore, why would you go to that specific area?
The difference is that murder is random. You don’t have tools to know when to expect it and where’d you get shot. If we did, yes I would visit those places. You can measure radiation and know exactly how much exposure you’ll receive. I get the fear, completely. But like the other person said it’s less harmful than a beach vacation and less risky than a hiking trip.
