Those poor firefighters/scientists and their families. That would be a horrid way to die.
I get why people here are ragging on Lyudmilla but I can see why she would stay. Ignorance about ARS is part of it but I can’t imagine just leaving your spouse alone to suffer and die with no comfort.
It bugs me how many people are just calling her stupid and missing the whole point. Not only was she ignorant to acute radiation sickness but this was a man she loved.
It was certainly a mistake on her part but one that is at least understandable under the circumstances.
Yeah, multiple times he was calling for her. How cold do you have to be to say “nah, this looks dangerous” and leave?
Be mad at the higher ups and the general inability to be honest present in the USSR at that time, not the woman who is literally watching her husband rot to death in front of her.
Yeah the people saying that are obviously not married, and probably don’t even know what it means to love somebody. Because real talk? I woulda done the same for my own husband. No question. “Don’t touch him”?? Fuck you, I’m hugging my sweetheart. idgaf
Lyudmilla was ride or die till the very end and I’ve got nothing but admiration for that lady. Wish people would show some fucking respect.
Also it’s pretty fucking presumptuous and gross to be like “omg she’s so stupid”, because what Lyudmilla - this very real person who is still very much alive - is experiencing here is literally an UNIMAGINABLE situation. I think it’s all a little bit more complex than what some judgy rando on reddit would like to believe after having watched 50 minutes of some tv show, if I’m being completely honest. And I think everyone should just shut the fuck up and count their lucky stars that they will never have to be put in Lyudmilla Ignatenko’s situation, and be presented with the choices she had to make.
Also it would be prudent for these people to listen to the accompanying podcast that Mazin has put out for this episode, because in it he talks about Lyudmilla’s motivation. Might shed some light. Although I guess that might be too much to ask; people never wanna put in any actual work, they just wanna run their mouths.
I think the real criticism is that she was pregnant. It's understandable wanting to be close to her husband as he died, but she's also responsible for their child. Which, obviously did not work out so well...
Not only was she ignorant to acute radiation sickness but this was a man she loved.
I don't think she's ignorant of ARS. IIRC she acknowledges her husband is going to die before anyone directly tells her, and I think they did that to show she's smarter than she comes off.
I think she's explicitly choosing to hurt herself/her baby because getting to say goodbye is worth it to her.
Still need to question why he went from playing cards to becoming a moisturized mummy in the span of a couple days, maybe you’re not dealing with ordinary burns and you should listen to the doctors.
You do want to shake her and throw her out of the building, but dear God, it's her job as his wife to be there for him. And look at how alone and scared the others are as they die...
You just wish they could have been given more comfort or something, but the very nature of their condition makes that impossible.
They thing is how much Radiation do the men still have on them surely not enough to be a danger anymore for short periods of time.
Also why didn't they give her Potassium Iodide or Prussian Blue surely every nurse and doctor would be, shouldn't the visitors if they are emitting radiation? We know the Scientist Lady is or was taking them.
Uhh people don't have a problem with her not leaving her spouse alone. The problem people have is the excessive touching, including kissing his fucking sores, after being told not to for her own safety, while carrying a fucking child for god's sakes.
