For anybody wanting to participate, if you are able to catch a king or coho salmon on a top water bass lure with proof wins any flair of their choosing, beyond racism or what have you. You also get to say you’ve caught a top water salmon on purpose.
These are my two choices. Let’s see yours!

Once the Largemouth (Mid May-Late June) and Smallmouth (Early-Late May) spawns are over, and the transitional period (that we are currently in) end, Lake Michigan and its many harbors develop their own very specific patterns relative to the rest of the country. The temperatures will begin to increase at night, and by mid summer, they will begin hugging the bottom, feeding on crawfish and gobies (imitate using Ned Rigs and Tubes around structure and under boats).
During the early hours of the morning, they will readily eat various types of crankbaits, jerkbaits, spinners, and spoons as well. Many lures will work, but it is unlike Texas where you can throw a giant chatterbait next to a dock and land a big. We live in a finesse system. Fortunately, our bycatch can get pretty big. In the Lake you could accidentally catch a drum (primarily bottom feeders but also opportunistic) or a pike (target spring and fall with jerkbaits near weed beds) which is a bonus, but the fishing can come off as slow. Which it often is. If you’re tired of that, visit one of our many rivers.
Our rivers such as the Des Plaines and the Fox are much more active throughout the year, and fish including the likes of walleye, crappie, bass, white bass will eat spinners and various types of moving baits like it’s nobodies business. Cast upstream and retrieve in a natural presentation where you sense a fish would be (I.e. current breaks) and have some fun.
We also have some Great Lakes (no pun intended) like the Skokie Lagoons. Jigs and spinnerbaits work great there, as do bluegill swimbaits against weed beds. The Chicago River loves a good dropshot or Ned rig/tube, and has various hotspots between Sheridan and the Navy Pier Locks.
Hope this helps some people out for the summer.
Edit: dropshot minnow imitations also work well mid summer, as well as dragging dropshot Ned rigs. Overall, you want to apply finesse applications to harbors and the Chicago River. For other rivers, you can still be aggressive during the day with inline spinners, crankbaits, spinnerbaits, glide baits/pre rigged swimbaits, etc.

Is it worth going to montrose harbor to target kings? I was going to go more at night but I could head further up north if needed. Any tips?

Haven't been fishing, other than messing around here and there, for about 20 years. Hoping to take the kids out today and actually catch something. Preferably in the west burbs (near Lagrange, Oak Brook). Any recommendations?

I had packed in all of my gear. Caught it at the last minute. Huge shoutout to the guy who was crossing my line all night (and even hooked me once). And the other guy who was yelling about the KKK and Pritzker.
Stay classy McHenry.

Hello,
I'm fairly new to lake michigan fishing and looking for someone to go out there with for some company and/or sharing tips.
I'll mostly be casting spoons and crankbaits looking for salmon or lake trout, but I'm also down for fishing smaller lakes for bass or catfish.

Trying to plan a trip out to take my 3 boys out, rent a little boat, and try to hook into some fish they haven’t caught or seen before. Every lake I’ve looked at is heavily fished so I’m just trying to figure out where might I find these fish outside the usual spots like the dam for instance. Also if it helps I looked into Maple Lake and Tampier Lake as well if those would be any better idk. Just trying to make some good memories with my boys.

Hey everyone! Going to find some pikes this weekend, can you suggest any places?
I had some luck in harbours but it looks like pikes are rare there.

I usually go to out of state creeks and rivers for salmon but with it being so early and a lot of tribs being blown out - I decided to go to Montrose a few nights ago into the morning since it was the only place I fished over night in the city before. Are there other harbors that let fisherman park and fish after 11? Or is it park at your own risk of a ticket/tow?

I know this isn’t Chicago.. but I always love the input from this group on fishing plans etc.
Spending a week at the Dunes with my family, we rent a house on the lake. I’ve only ever fished Lake Michigan from Chicago area or via charter.
Is there anything to catch at the dunes on the lake from shore? Any tips would be appreciated.

Super tough fishing right now with the quick current and VERY murky water. This guy saved the day and slammed the chatterbait closer to the wall where the water was a little calmer. Not huge but a good fight and nice healthy fish. Tight lines!

Welp, she’s a different river this week — high, fast and cranky. Terrible conditions to run a Craw, so I launched a bluegill crank, never made a clean pass due to debris, and ultimately lost it on a gnarly snag (argh). No luck on a black Mepps #3 dressed (chartreuse tail), though way fewer weeds/grass. Tough to throw anything upstream and catch up to the current. Bummer, but there weren’t many things I’d rather have been doing for that half hour.

I wanna try fishing around lunch time - work is at madison and wells - and with my scooter I can access riverwalk, lakefront marina/yacht club that is north of randolph, and the whole stretch towards planaterium.
Thanks.

Has anyone ever explored the Mazon River? Have been searching the north half of Illinois for a solid creek/small river wading experience but haven’t found one yet. Found this via google maps but it’s farther away from me so was wondering if anyone could give any intel? Thanks in advance.

Seems like fish got the memo that fall is coming. Lots of jumpers and bass activity all on dropshot plastic minnows. Finished off with a bit of carping. One bluegill and one cookie cutter carp that I had to unhook in the water so no pic.

Anyone having any luck with fishing Grass Lake or in that area? I have gone out twice now and hit the lily pads pretty hard, and any other cover that I could find with no luck at all. I tried pitching and flipping, frogs, top water, texas rigs, wacky rigs, dipped my toes in, and suggestively moved them to no avail. Any suggestions on colors or baits that seem to work?

Fish are from Friday and today. Not shown are a bunch of dead gobies and a rock bass. Mostly caught on a drop shot. First two are from calumet beach today, last four are from south of Montrose a few days ago
