Weekly Shoutout Thread - What Was Good This Week?

Welcome to r/ChicagoFood's weekly shoutout thread!

This thread is the place to shout out places that you tried from recommendations from this sub this past week that fit the bill.

They can be places that get recommended here, such as:

  • frequently recommended restaurants
  • that random, niche spot that some random comment dropped
  • a chicken sando from our very own chicken sando guru

The goal of this thread is to celebrate and encourage the recommendations and contributions of your suggestions, and, also, maybe encourage YOU to try that place that was recommended a few times here.

As always, all subreddit rules apply and any comments/posts that violate our rules or Reddit's will be removed.

This thread is sorted by "new" so that the most recent comments appear first. The new weekly thread is posted every Sunday morning at 2:00 AM Central.

This year's event was pretty alright, crowd control was amazing, barley any crowding and lines went fast. But the vendors need some serious work, there needs to be at least 5-7 more next year with more food options.

I will make a separate post about what I ate and how much I spent.

Review Had Obelix for the first time

as the title states had Obelix for the first time for brunch. Haven’t seen too many people post about this place but I had a great experience. Service was top notch and everything was really great. Started off with the creme brûlée and peaches and cream pastries. super flaky and very delicious. then had half a dozen oysters along with the shrimp cocktail. both really great, really enjoyed the apple mignonette for the oysters. and for entrees we both had the heirloom tomato sandwich and the crepe homard. super incredible, the sauce and lobster with the crepe were to die for… all that paired with a nice orange wine. super delicious and will hopefully be back to check out dinner service.

Doing some good stuff over there. The whipped ricotta is a nice touch. Would have again. The jalapeño on the “Untitled #1” pizza brings plenty of heat.

I love Victory Grill. In particular, the 2 hot dogs with fries for $9.99 deal, but the burgers are decent, nice big salads. and they’re open til 1 AM.
And tonight is their last night. Swing by if you get the chance. Thanks, Wicker Park pizza place.

Review Sweet Moon Cafe In Ravenswood

Post image

We were craving some pastries and coffee, and decided to try Sweet Moon. I'm so glad we did, because we'll be returning. Here's what we got (starting closest to the camera) - Burrata pastry: so good, I wish it was a little warmer, but the filling was flavorful from the tomato and balsamic, and delightfully creamy -Flat croissant: sort of an impulse order, but really good. Chewy and not too sweet, and held up well as a leftover later -Raspberry Berliner: good lord. The filling was a light cream that wasn't too sweet, but was tasty and completed the zingy raspberry jelly. The pastry itself was airy. 1000% will get again. -Feta and veg pastry: yummy, tart, and satisfying. Again, I wish it was a little warmer, but still so good. -Chicken Samsa: not really for me, but the shortbread dough was delicious. I was a little put off by the texture of the ground chicken, but it was well spiced. -Kosher sausage pirozhki: like a better pig in a blanket, and also not pork, so I could eat it. So tasty. -Potato pirozhki: this one had the most warmed filling of all, and reminded me of a potato knish. I could see this being a real treat on a cold day. Very bready dough and a smooth filling. We also had an Americano, which was good, and the service and friendliness of the staff sealed the deal on adding it to our favorite places. If you're in the area, I highly, highly recommend trying their pastries. I'll definitely return to try their meals as well!

Question Help! I can’t remember!

Hey everyone! I’m desperately seeking a restaurant I found while black out drunk a few years back. I was walking around in the wee hours of the morning (I think it was downtown) and saw a light on the sidewalk. It was one of those fancy logo lights that beam onto the sidewalk for drunks like me that aren’t looking at signage. I went in with my group (also drunk) and it was a late night build-your-own-burrito kind of deal, but they had pre-selected options as well. Basically, they had a burrito with tater tots, eggs, bacon, and a whole bunch of other awesome shit in it and it was transformative. I have no idea what it was. I think a wall was light blue? I’ve been craving it for literal years and searching for “burrito joints in Chicago” isn’t helping. I’ll buy you one if you can help me find it. TIA.

That jerk chicken banh mi changed my life. Very refreshing and they give you a lot of chicken. The fries were also pretty good, a bit salty but it needed way more of that cream sauce.

I went around 2 PM on a Sunday and a lot of things were sold out already. I think next year I will come a little earlier to try more things.

Prices were okay, vendors were telling me they were lowering prices from Saturday and I was like damn, I guess that's a way to get a better deal.

Next year I hope they have more local vendors. Very odd I could not find a single Chicago dog or actual local pizza (no offense Pizza Amici).

Question Old School And Genuinely Cool Restaurant Recs

Visiting Chicago next month and looking for some dinner recommendations! I’ve been to the city enough times to know which bars I like (California Clipper, Innertown, Richard’s, Delilah’s, Rainbo) but have admittedly spent more time drinking than eating in the past.

If there’s any restaurants that have a similar vibe to those bars, kind of scuzzy but cozy…youknowwhatimsayin?

I’m also into more fine dining recs. Ideally with a nice wine menu, old school chef, smaller places…where to eat dinner when you’re feeling glamorous yet misanthropic?

I’ll be staying in bucktown but willing to hit the road for the perfect evening

9/10 burger, truly delectable. $24, on the pricier end but truly was worth it. I’ve been planning to do a burger day in downtown with a group of friends and this is joining the rotation.

Question Inexpensive North Side spot for anniversary dinner?

My 28th wedding anniversary is next week and I've been out of work and am a little strapped for cash... but not totally. We can still do an inexpensive night out and are looking to do so. We're hitting Lincoln Park Zoo during the day. For dinner we are willing to travel to most of the North Side, as we know it well. Any suggestions for a decent spot where we can get dinner and drinks and keep it under $100? Bonus points for a nice outdoor patio. Thanks!

Review Coup de Thai crab curry lived up to the hype

Post image
38 Upvotes

I saw Mitch and others post about the crab curry at coup de Thai and decided to uber eats it. I was initially disappointed by the portion size and relatively plain presentation for $30 (it looks like you get more dining in, plus it comes in an awesome pot). They pack the crab separately which I agree was a healthy portion. Digging in though I instantly forgot about my prior concerns—this was one of the best things I’ve eaten in recent memory. 10/10 would spend $30 again to get it

Korean Comfort Food galore. Galbi-jjim/chive pancakes/yuzu tiramisu were crazy.

Highly recommend & worth getting a res in advance as it’s on the smaller size.

Question Does Lou Mitchell's get very busy on Sunday at opening?

Visiting Chicago soon and would like to eat at Lou Mitchell's before our 8:30 train from Millennium Station. (There are 4 of us) Do they get very busy at 7 AM Sunday morning, and would we have enough time to eat before the train. If not Lou Mitchell's, is there another place better close by to Millennium Station or River North?
