Truly the best thing I've seen today.

Have you read the piece about Rick Pitino Greek League Coach?

Which? I remember some good ones from when he was there but no way I could find them now

Fall behind 7-0. Win by 30. Typical St. John's beatdown.

The way it was going even halfway through when the score was tied around the 20s, SJU looked pretty bad, I was worried it was gonna be a close game and then they decided to make their shots

Tonight was a rerun of the Big East Final

And the Big East semi final. And like half their games this season.

I think it was around December when I stopped getting mad and saying “god this team is so fucking ass” whenever games started like this. Then I realized this is what they do.

Then they hit me with the Uno reverse in the Providence game where they blew a 16 point lead and won by 1. This team plays with such an incredibly level head when their shots aren’t falling, it’s when they miss FTs that you start to worry.

2

u/sdotmill St. John's Red Storm Mar 21 '25

Haha it was definitely a learning process as a fan this year

As a St. John’s and Rutgers fan I’m just used to the teams starting out poorly for the first 10 minutes, and then it continuing for the next 30 haha

1

u/VRomero32 St. John's Red Storm Mar 21 '25

I always equate it to fighting main henchman in the movie, “The Raid”… at first you’re like, “this guy” and you get your offense in and then 2 mins later he’s destroying you with 20 hit combos.

Like that or when Ace Ventura fought that tribesman in “Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls”

Crazy fact: This is the first Round of 32 for a New York City team since 2004. That year, Manhattan made it. St. John's themselves hasn't made it since 2000.

42

u/birdinthird Mar 21 '25

Hell yea bro city is gonna be live if they go far

16

u/TortoiseTortillas Mar 21 '25

True though sometimes it seems like UConn is a NYC team with how they make MSG their home court

Manhattan beat the Gators. That was one of the flattest ive ever seen a Billy Donovan Gator team perform.

They truly are a second half team.

Congrats St. John’s. You guys are incredible.

28

u/RCPCHK St. John's Red Storm • Big East Mar 21 '25

I don’t think I’ve seen a team be more physical boxing out all season. It was truly frustrating to watch as a StJ fan but great to see as a former undersized 3/4. I wasn’t comfortable until I realized you guys were looking for the perfect shot, instead of the open shot, and it just wasn’t falling. Good game, good luck, and get back to the tourney next year!

123

u/[deleted] Mar 21 '25

The St Johns gimmick where in the second half they decide you’re not gonna score anymore and they’re gonna make every open 3 is pretty incredible lmao

24

u/baachou Maryland Terrapins Mar 21 '25

They didn't exactly let Omaha score in the first half either, lol.

1

u/Capital_Basket_7587 BYU Cougars Mar 21 '25

Feel like they had lots of chances in the first half, just couldn’t execute. It probably could’ve been a 10 point game at halftime if they had been hot. They got absolutely shut down in the second though

1

u/baachou Maryland Terrapins Mar 21 '25

I did feel like SJ made a bunch of defensive plays in the 2nd half (I've never seen so many step back 3s get blocked lol) but I don't think you miss 15 straight 3s just by good defense - they had some open looks and just bricked.

58

u/dont_ask_my_cab Maryland Terrapins Mar 21 '25

Every now and again, seeing Rick Pitino makes me think he literally has been dead -- not that he's undead, but that he somehow got out of being dead with a trade or something. Keith Richards does the same for me, and the Stones opened the day on CBS so maybe why I'm capping with it. Or I'm just yappin' and don't mind me.

Funnily enough they both went to St John’s for grad school. Growing up it was really just the women’s team I cared about outside of the Kemba years, that was like a religion for all the women on my mom’s side. Lots of old Italian women who loved Geno.

53

u/CheeryBlond Creighton Bluejays Mar 21 '25

You didn’t forget how to play basketball. This is just what St. John’s does. Pitino has to go into the locker room each halftime and convince his players that they are, in fact, freaks of nature and not some guys he just found in Penn Station and then, boom, you’re down by 20. Don’t blame yourself.

St. Johns does that every second half to every single team. Dont feel bad. Your team genuinely put up a good fight considering it was their first ever tourney game.

Thank god the 2nd half Johnnies woke up. Those first 7 minutes in the first half were atrocious from them, laying bricks from 3 like it's a damn construction site. They've got to do much better in the first half, otherwise this team can get themselves in trouble again. Nonetheless, I'm finally happy to see my Johnnies win an NCAAT game in a long time. Omaha should still be proud of themselves for keeping it close for a while. If they weren't playing against the Red Storm, I would've happily rooted for them, cause they were a fun team to watch during their Summit League tournament run. On to Arkansas now in the 2nd round, and hopefully get off to a better start this time.

5

u/DaoDeDickinson Gonzaga Bulldogs Mar 21 '25

Rooting for St. John's... they haven't been this good since they were a 2 seed knocked out by a 10 seed Gonzaga team in Mark Few's first season as head coach. Now they have to play as a 2 seed against... a 10 seed coached by John Calipari?!

I like Calipari maybe more than Pitino - either way still rooting for St. John's but the first champion I remember was Arkansas in '94.

I feel we put their program on tilt in 2000 with this game:

[for fans of Arizona and haters of the Big Ten, viewer discretion is advised]

Somehow we won even though Calvary had 2 fouls before the game was 2 minutes in?
