If we would have made all of our three pointers, we would have scored 181 points and set an NCAA tournament record.
But we didn’t.

He’s going to play in the nba for like 10 years merely off his ability to make threes.
These guys play in the nba forever.

I have this love hate relationship with the tournament because I love upsets. I love rooting for the underdog… until my team has to play.
I knew this would be a stressful game for some reason. Hell of a fight from UNCW.

Yeah, I think one thing the tournament can show even with losses is that your programs can play with the big boys. Ditto for UC San Diego, they are LEGIT and nobody can take that away.

Tech shot poorly enough on open threes to keep UNCW in it, but not quite poorly enough for them to win it.
They basically doubled Toppin on every post entry and over-helped on every high PnR, which led to roughly 30 open threes in the HC. Tech made like eight of those, with four of the other five coming on second chance opportunities and in transition.
It looks rough, but a 10 point win shooting like that is encouraging. Granted- I doubt anyone defends the line as poorly as UNCW does going forward, but process-wise the offense was phenomenal and easily could’ve dropped 100
5
u/phamousj Texas Tech Red Raiders Mar 21 '25
This was my take away too. We've seen it all year where they double on toppin and he'll kick it out to the perimeter for the open 3. A lot of the shots weren't bad they just weren't hitting them. I still trust those guys to shoot the ball because we have seen them knock them down over and over again.
2
u/Terrible_Test8776 Mar 21 '25
Yeah totally agree also the games totally different if one of Elijah Hawkins or Christian Anderson make like two or three more 3's because then UNCW can't just clog the paint and over rotate. Game changed when Hawkins hit the pull up three where they went under the screen with about 7 minutes left, I really think we lose if he misses that.
5
u/Matadoroftheskies Texas Tech Red Raiders Mar 21 '25
It was odd. As a process that totally worked, but you can't account for an elite shooting team to go 30% on open 3s for a whole game. It was baffling.

Not gonna lie didn’t expect to win the way we started the 2nd half but I’m glad that we did. If we shoot 13-46 from three on Saturday we getting our ass kicked by Drake.
6
u/ESM_juddy96 Mar 21 '25
46 is more than the number of total shots Missouri had all game against Drake (Drake is the slowest paced team in the country)
10
u/rvadarocket Maryland Terrapins • Texas Longhorns Mar 21 '25
Great effort by UNCW, just didn’t have the bodies or energy they were completely gassed by the end of the game
Tough way for Newby to go out but I figured his lack of size would be what held back UNCW from an upset and I hate that I was right :(

I can finally breathe. Shooting almost 50 threes is kinda fucking ridiculous, especially so in a single elimination tournament game. Kerwin was awesome tonight though.
Hopefully we can emulate Kendrick Lamar on Saturday.

u/rvadarocket Maryland Terrapins • Texas Longhorns Mar 21 '25
Newby was just too small to be lead guard and scorer vs an elite P5 team
Good player but overmatched athletically and that shutdown a lot of what they wanted to do
6
u/TheRobberBar0n UNC Wilmington Seahawks • North… Mar 21 '25
He doesn’t have the ball handling to find himself space. He was just getting clamped and accepting it by turning his back. Hodge was so much more effective.
1
u/rvadarocket Maryland Terrapins • Texas Longhorns Mar 21 '25
Yeah he’s a great off ball player and secondary playmaker imo but the problem is y’all don’t have have another PG to use, Hodge is a good shot creator but he can’t playmake like Newby can
2
u/TheRobberBar0n UNC Wilmington Seahawks • North… Mar 21 '25
Totally agreed. When he started playing on ball we abandoned the paint and we had gotten them in foul trouble early in the second.

u/Texxx81 Texas Tech Red Raiders Mar 21 '25
I mean.. he's bigger than Elijah Hawkins...
1
u/rvadarocket Maryland Terrapins • Texas Longhorns Mar 21 '25
And Hawkins has better handles and a WAY better supporting cast lol
Also Hawkins went 3/14 just like Newby went 2/10 so I don’t see how this disproved my point at all? All it shows is Newby’s supporting cast wasn’t quite good enough lmao

Anyone else annoyed at how the announcers were constantly bringing how Tech was setting a school record for most threes ATTEMPTED? Not made, just attempted. I didn’t find it worthy of being brought up 5 times in the final minutes, especially when they were only making ~30% of them.
