They going for last place in OOC strength of schedule?

51

u/Siakim43 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2d ago

We haven't released our's yet because it's embarrassing.

15

u/Inside-Drink-1311 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2d ago

Honestly, I would fine with an easy OOC this year. We are going to be bad and maybe that gets us some momentum after the disaster that happened last year.

5

u/Siakim43 Rutgers Scarlet Knights 2d ago

True. But for some reason, we're never safe from games that are supposed to be cupcakes lol. Lafayette, Kennesaw St., Princeton, played Stonehill super close...

2

u/GoldenPresidio Rutgers Scarlet Knights • Big Ten 2d ago

Princeton isnt a cupcake in most years fyi

2

u/Rare-Psychology-3527 Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

No, but it's a game you're expected to win

6

u/SCsprinter13 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

We were 5th to last last year. Really gunning for the title this year.

1

u/RunnerTenor Illinois Fighting Illini 2d ago

Yeah, not exactly a murderer's row of opponents.

1

u/RedditZhangHao 2d ago

Any top conference schools have a softer OOC schedule?

Your annual reminder that Penn State has a basketball team.

Source?

22

u/Chilinuff Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago

I love their arena, cozy as heck

41

u/iHasMagyk Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2d ago

You may be the only person I’ve ever heard say they love the BJC

29

u/Chilinuff Ohio State Buckeyes 2d ago

I mean it’s called the BJ center…

But upon googling I was definitely thinking of the old 6k seat Rec Hall.

14

u/mitchdwx Penn State Nittany Lions • Bowling G… 2d ago

Rec Hall should be our home. We can’t even sell out the BJC for big games anymore. Best we can do is filling half the upper deck.

2

u/loyalsons4evertrue Iowa State Cyclones 2d ago

does Penn State volleyball and wrestling use the BJC? Seems like they have routine sellouts

3

u/mitchdwx Penn State Nittany Lions • Bowling G… 2d ago

Volleyball is always in Rec Hall. Wrestling is usually in Rec Hall but they’ll have bigger duals at the BJC.

2

u/Chasedabigbase Buffalo Bulls • Indiana Hoosiers 2d ago

How's the ice rink pegula funded?

4

u/SpecialistAirport694 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

6

they've been in the BJ Center for a long time. lol

5

u/Jewmangi Creighton Bluejays 2d ago

How do we tell him...

3

u/DandrewMcClutchen Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

Soo “budget” is a word we aren’t allowed to use anymore….

2

u/iHasMagyk Coastal Carolina Chanticleers 2d ago

Rec Hall is awesome. I’ve been there for a volleyball game and it was such a great atmosphere. BJC should just be a wrestling arena atp

13

u/Affectionate-Day2743 Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

purdue fans call it 'the mausoleum'. Lol.. though i shouldn't laugh too much because it feels like we lose there a disproportionate amount

12

u/UnusualHound 2d ago

Most Big Ten fans hate watching their team play there, not because of the potential to lose, but because the broadcast always seems to have a mic actively picking up the most annoying fan in the world who won't shut up, and they're emphasized because there aren't other fans drowning them out ever.

2

u/brett23 Wisconsin Badgers 2d ago

It’s somehow always that super annoying guy year after year lol. Honestly at this point it’s kinda nice to know that never changes

2

u/jcrespo21 Purdue Boilermakers • Michigan Wolverines 2d ago

I would argue that its relative silence but larger size, compared to other B1G arenas, makes it a harder place to play. If no one was there, it wouldn't be a problem. But those that do show up tend to stick out more since there isn't as much background noise to tune out. It's like how a fly in a quiet room is more annoying than construction going on the next block over.

How'd they end up with a game at New Haven?

145

u/GlassRelief6332 Providence Friars 2d ago

New Haven’s first year in D1 and Penn state wanted to give them a big home opener. Good gesture I guess.

56

u/chmcgrath1988 Boston College Eagles • Maine Black Bea… 2d ago

It also could be considered that maybe they wanted to try out the recently alleged best pizza in the country.

16

u/grey_pilgrim_ Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago

I worked in New Haven for a few months. The pizza lives up to the hype. It’s definitely different from anything else I’ve had. Haven’t had any classic New York style pies from New York but New Haven was on a different level from anything I’ve ever had

3

u/Ih8Hondas Missouri Tigers • New Mexico Lobos 2d ago edited 2d ago

I have a hate for NYC that burns with the intensity of a thousand suns, but even I have to recommend going there for pizza and other Italian food at some point. That shit is fucking delicious.

Was stuck there for an overnight layover last year and ordered so much Italian food (gnocchi, pasta, pizza, and more) to the hotel that I completely fucked myself up for the first few days of the trip.

3

u/SoothedSnakePlant Vanderbilt Commodores • Truman Bulld… 2d ago

The absolute best places in New York are better IMO, but the average pie in New Haven is incredibly good.

2

u/grey_pilgrim_ Tennessee Volunteers 2d ago

I’ve heard this from several people. I love New Haven style pizza but every once in a while I want pizza that doesn’t leave my hands looking like a graphite artist.

2

u/chmcgrath1988 Boston College Eagles • Maine Black Bea… 2d ago

Yeah. I need to get down there for a weekend since I'm less than a four-hour drive away.

15

I had 150 people in my entire high school and our gym was bigger than that.

At least all the freshman will feel at home, that “arena” is indistinguishable from a high school gym

Don’t a lot of state high school championships also play in Hershey?

3

They moved football. I forget where. Doesn’t matter. It was a stupid move. Not to be a homer but the only move that ever should have happened would be moving it to state college. Hershey was special.

u/Affectionate-Day2743 Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

can you elaborate on this? is there beef between Penn State and VCU?? lol

11

u/WillWork4SunDrop Alabama Crimson Tide • Kennesaw State… 2d ago

VCU puts a clause in their coaches’ contracts that if they leave for another job, that school has to schedule a home and home.

5

u/Affectionate-Day2743 Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

interesting idea. i don't see how it is enforceable though. which is probably why it hasn't happened.

12

u/2Obsequious Wisconsin Badgers 2d ago

Penn State had to buy out the series. They paid 250k to not have to play VCU.

8

u/HoyasRangers VCU Rams 2d ago

Exactly. Paying not to play an A-10 school. But I guess they didn't want to get pulverized.

3

u/National-Falcon-8353 VCU Rams 2d ago

Which is crazy because they're playing LaSalle - also an A10 school.

A10 is a knife fight every year.

7

u/WillWork4SunDrop Alabama Crimson Tide • Kennesaw State… 2d ago

Other schools have honored it. If they don’t, then I guess VCU receives liquidated damages because I doubt a judge is going to enforce specific performance.

Part of the deal may be that they don’t really care that much whether Penn State comes to Richmond because it isn’t all that interesting a matchup.

1

u/National-Falcon-8353 VCU Rams 2d ago

We did end up playing them in a preseason tournament the year after Rhoades left and handily beat them.

1

u/Formo1287 Penn State Nittany Lions • Dayton Flyers 2d ago

We stole their coach because Notre Dame stole ours. Idk whose coach they stole after that though

2

u/SCsprinter13 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

They took Utah State's who already left for UVA.

Utah State took Montana State's coach who left after 1 year to Washington.

Montana State took the Point Loma Sea Lions coach

Point Loma hired from within a man that played college basketball as recently as 2015

Hockey, wrestling and women’s volleyball too. Not enough of the alumni/fans care about basketball to make it worthwhile to invest heavily into the program. This is coming from someone who loves PSU basketball. The truth hurts sometimes lol. The funny thing is we invest much more than we used to but NIL killed any chance for the program to actually become something.

6

u/misdreavus79 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

So the team that finished 17th in the 18-team big ten a season ago, had just about every player with experience depart, and backfield with a bunch of international players, should have had tougher non-con?

8

u/CallMeVe Bradley Braves • Missouri Valley 2d ago

They should at least have something to prepare them for the B1G gauntlet, yes.

0

u/misdreavus79 Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

The quintessential chicken or egg argument. Have a tough non-con that demoralizes a new team before conference season even begins or have an easy non-con that gives a false sense of security.

Either way, if the team is good they'll be good. If they're bad, they'll be bad. I'm going to assume this non-con is a reflection of what the coach thinks of the team he has.

2

u/badger0511 Wisconsin Badgers 2d ago

Yeah, I mean, it's a pathetic schedule, but if they want any kind of a chance at a postseason tournament, they need to get close .500 in the B1G and devour cupcakes in the non-conference to get to 18-20 wins. There's something to be said for building team confidence from getting early wins. That won't happen with a gauntlet for a non-conference schedule where you're rocking a 6-7 (0-2) record on New Year's Eve.

-1

u/falconlover79 Georgia Bulldogs • Penn State Nittany Lio… 2d ago

Clearly we should be trying to go 6-5 in non con, when we basically have no chance of doing better than 10-10 in conference. Why are we even trying to have an above .500 record??

2

u/Other-Chemical-6393 North Carolina Tar Heels 2d ago

u/Single_Seesaw_9499 Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

u/mtwolf55 Oregon State Beavers 2d ago

3

u/Affectionate-Day2743 Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

purdue and penn state are just inverses of one another in basketball and football. we have garbage football and good basketball. they have good football and garbage basketball. and for this reason they're my favorite Big 10 opponent. lol

2

u/Single_Seesaw_9499 Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

Penn State basketball is not major. Again I don’t know what people want from them, I’d get the criticism if it was a program like Michigan or OSU doing this who actually have history of success but it’s fucking Penn State man. It would be like getting mad at a program like Kansas in football for not scheduling hard. Your expectations should not be applied to all teams across a conference

3

u/milesgmsu Michigan State Spartans 2d ago

Your go to successful basketball programs in conference are Michigan and osu?

3

u/Single_Seesaw_9499 Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

I’m making a comparison to other predominantly football schools in the conference. Obviously this type of scheduling is beneath you guys

2

u/Solesky1 Indiana State Sycamores 2d ago

Isn't it actually in the best interest of the B1G and SEC to give their worst teams the hardest non-con SOS?

Like you want Penn State playing like the HBCUs that have like 12 P4 buys games, @Alabama @Auburn @Duke etc so their SOS is so high they're a Q3 win instead of a Q4.

5

u/Affectionate-Day2743 Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

i see what you're saying, and in theory yes. but not in the real world. in the real world wins and losses matter and you can't build up a program (like Mike Rhoads is trying to do) if you're getting demolished in the non-conference. they have to get wins even if they're very weak wins. and Penn State is not going to voluntarily be a sacrificial lamb so that Purdue/MSU/Michigan SOS is fractionally better

2

u/Single_Seesaw_9499 Purdue Boilermakers 2d ago

I don’t care about the rest of the teams in the conference, it is what it is. You can only control your noncon, and I’m happy with what Purdue has been doing while understanding that not every program could or should schedule that way

1

u/rinetrouble Penn State Nittany Lions 2d ago

So weird seeing Xfinity Mobile Arena.

Hopefully the fans show up since it could be terrible for recruiting to have a half empty arena in what’s suppose to be a showcase recruiting game. Need to make sure the football game isn’t scheduled at the same time.

But yeah man PSU basketball sucks, so they play a shitty non-con schedule to get some wins before heading into the big ten schedule. It would be nice to have some stronger opponents, and it’s cool we’ve got the game against Pitt in Hershey, but when you’re ass you play bad teams to pick up some wins so you don’t go like 5-25

They consulted James Franklin on how to build a schedule that guarantees a lot of wins and then allows you to complain at tournament time.

Playing road games against low and mid majors is good actually, this schedule is fine

Any softer and we’d have to call it a B1G football schedule.

ESPN gonna sell us on the gauntlet of a Big 10 basketball schedule.
