It can be hard to find others in their 20s/30s in Columbia, so Columbia Social has worked to create a community where people can meet others in the same age range! In September we are doing 3 events!

Wednesday September 10 4-6PM: Columbia Social does Community

This will be a weeding and planting event where participants will help remove invasive species and replace them with beneficial native plants. This work helps attract and sustain more wildlife, promotes biodiversity, and slows the flow of rainwater runoff. CA will provide any equipment needed. If you are coming after 4, that is absolutely okay!

The event will take place along Lake Kittamaquandi. Participants should bring water as well as wear long pants, sturdy, close-toed shoes, and a hat. Parking can be found near the Whole Foods lot, and the meeting point will be at the bottom of the fountain area.

Thursday September 25 5-8PM: Mix & Mingle @ Cushwa

Come join Columbia Social for a monthly happy hour! To find us, as you enter through the doors head directly to the right. There will be an opening so a side room. The side room will be us. You can also look for the people in name tags or ask any employee for the Columbia Social meetup

Sunday September 28 Noon-4PM: Swing into Fall Mini Golf & BBQ @ Columbia Sports Park

Come join Columbia Social for a "Swing into Fall" event at the Columbia Sportspark. This is a ticketed event, and every person attending will need to purchase a ticket. A ticket will get you unlimited mini golf, mission BBQ buffet, snacks and non-alcoholic beverages. This will be a great way to hang out, play some games, and connect with other young professionals in the area! If you have any questions or food sensitivities, please reach out!

Tickets for sale here & address for the facility is 5453 Harpers Farm Road Columbia, MD

Tell Rep. Sarah Elfreth: Cosponsor the Block the Bombs Act (H.R. 3565)

Thumbnail
actionnetwork.org
0 Upvotes

The Block the Bombs Act (H.R. 3565) would halt transfers of specific “offensive” U.S. munitions to Israel.

While Howard County for a Free Palestine wants to end ALL US support to apartheid Israel, this is a narrow, common-sense step focused on weapons repeatedly linked to mass-casualty strikes on civilians.

Weapons such as BLU-109 bunker busters, MK-80 series bombs, GBU-39 SDBs, JDAM kits, SPICE kits, 120mm tank rounds, and 155mm artillery (including white phosphorus), unless Congress authorizes their use and Israel provides written assurances of compliance with U.S. and international law.

The bill has been introduced and is gaining Democratic cosponsors, including Maryland’s Rep. Jamie Raskin, but it needs more support.

Rep. Elfreth should add her name to protect civilians, uphold U.S. law, and exercise congressional oversight.

Holiday “Slide” Saturday Trash Collection

I tried searching and it wasn’t clear to me, but is there trash collection on Sundays if our normal pickup is on Saturday and there’s a holiday?

https://www.howardcountymd.gov/bureau-environmental-services/holidayinclement-weather-trash-recycling-schedule only lists Monday through Saturday collection.

Seems lame that we miss a collection day, if that’s the case. 😕

Hair Stylist for Young Man with Long Hair

My son decided to grow out (shoulder length or so) his fine straight hair 🤦🏻‍♀️. It is just stringy! I think he needs a style-maybe layers or something. He also needs someone who can show him how to maintain.

Can anyone recommend a men’s hair stylist who could do this?

Fireworks

I know we all love fireworks but it is 10:30 and it’s not really summer anymore. And for anyone who wants to argue I am fear mongering I am not, I know those are fireworks because I can hear the crackle that they make after they go off.

A special treat - 1 year married.

Hi all,

New to the area and looking for evening out for our 1st wedding anniversary.

Considering spa, meal, etc.

Does anyone have any recommendations? It would be a Friday evening. Price is less of a factor, most important is a good evening, but still exploring the area.

We're in food, films, drinks, all the usual stuff.

Thanks all on advance.

Car wash

Can anyone recommend a self wash car wash with free vacuums in and around Columbia? I used to go to Canton car wash but, their car wash would leave micro scratches all over my car so I'm trying to avoid that with my new car.

Rude parents

Had anyone else had issues at merriweather or surrounding playgrounds where kids are acting out and you correct them and their parent comes in and yells at you?

I was at amped in the park today and two kids were THROWING cornhole bags and we're almost hitting people (including my 4 and 2 year old) and came up screaming at me. A cop got involved - he was talking to her because she was blowing up (and then I did).

Anyways I just don't know what I could've done (beside walking away but I was low key scared to turn my back on her - esp with my little ones).

It makes me want to move far away from here.

Getting Covid vaccine for 2+ year old?

I just got an email from HoCo peds that I interpreted to mean that if I have a healthy kid (meaning no underlying conditions I guess?) they won't be vaccinating them and won't write a prescription for them to get a vaccine somewhere else. How are folks getting their healthy kids vaccinated?

The mental gymnastics of people who say they don't want the government to tell people what to put in their bodies, and then support a government that tells them what they are allowed to put in their bodies, is fucking astounding.

Is there a difference in how much different dentist (in HoCo) charge for procedures?

I have dental insurance but of course it doesn't cover the whole cost.

Do most areas dentists charge about the same for procedures like bridges, implants, crowns?

Any Creatives wanna collab?

Im a relatively small and pretty new artist looking for local creatives who want to build and grow together. I’ve got an album era i’d like to bring to life with visuals (music videos, photo shoots, short and long form content, etc)

Right now I don’t have a budget (yet) so I’m looking for people who want to build their portfolio, and be creative using the resources available. The goal is to create work that looks professional, attracts attention, and eventually leads to paid opportunities.

So if you wanna create some magic and start a team from the ground up leave a comment of what you do and lets get to work!

How’s the housing market? From my understanding that Columbia has large amount of government employees and service members.

Dogs at High School Games

My niece plays varsity field hockey and would love to attend with my pomperian. She's 7lbs and fits in a purse and doesn't bark at strangers.

Are dogs allowed at Howard County HS Games?

Renting in Columbia/surrounding area.

New to the area and looking for a two bedroom apartment in a safe area. An older apartment complex without all the newfangled amenities would be just fine as I wouldn’t use them and don’t want to pay extra for them. Also, I’m not adverse to a complex with older people. Any suggestions?
