Streaming DVR?

I’m seriously considering cutting the cord with Xfinity, as my monthly bill seems to average $350 for internet service plus whatever package I have. Most of the family streams instead of watching the cable tv stations, but my wife really likes having the DVR and has a bunch of shows recorded. I would like to get rid of the DVR and the three additional cable boxes, cancel the program packages, and just keep Xfinity for their high speed internet service. Maybe replace the boxes with Apple TV’s or Roku’s. Wondering if there is a DVR for streaming that would keep my wife happy after making these changes.

I had a monthly bill of over $300 for Comcast when we cut the cord and got DirecTV. DVR is unlimited in the cloud with DirecTV. I got my regional sports stations, and after some startup technical glitches, it's running fine. Our bill is $130 a month. We still pay Comcast $45 a month for internet, and we have subscriptions to Netflix and HBO. We are saving $100 a month.

But more than that, I no longer feel like a sucker. I'm doing end of life planning. I'm 71 and we're getting our affairs in order. And I thought to myself if I'm paying Comcast $3,780 a year, I'll have spent 37,800 the next 10 years on Comcast. I just could not look myself in the eye.

I sympathize with her. As a long-time TiVo user, it's hard to break out of DVR habits.

All of the "cable replacement" services such as YouTube TV and Philo offer a DVR. Go to suppose.tv and plug in your must-have channels.

If you don't actually need live TV, maybe start thinking in terms of shows rather than channels. Go to JustWatch and find where her shows are streaming. New episodes might not appear at the same time as cable, but it would probably be cheaper and possibly more convenient in the long run.

Many of the apps have their shows on demand, basically the same as dvr.
I do have a small box attached to the antenna that dvrs to a thumb drive. It's rare that I bother with it, but it's easy to use if needed. Cost about $30 on Amazon.

ffmpeg for recording and you need to find a way to extract direct url. Jellyfin is nice for recording.

When our Xfinity bill went over $300, it was time to end it. So instead of $300/mo, We'll have internet from AT&T, plus YouTube TV -- including UNILMITED DVR. We can also have our current premiums (Max & Netflix), plus Hulu, Disney+, and Apple+ TV for a total of $186/mo!!! That's a 38% reduction. Cut the cord, and don't look back.

Roku is proprietary. You just need a Firestick or ONN 4K Pro, and an IPTV account for $120yr that will have thousands of movies, shows, live sports from every team in every league, PPV fights, and live cable channels.
