When you go to live hand grenade training, the first thing they tell you is the threat range for a fragmentation grenade is larger than the distance you can throw it.

Yes. If you have a hole to lie in, that could work. But grenades are mainly used to clear out places where the enemy is hiding, be it a fox hole or a bunker or a room in a house, whatever. You nailed the main point, that you want to toss it where there is some obstacle between you and the enemy.

Yes. The m67 only has like 6 or 7 ounces of actual explosive in it.

That isn't enough bang in itself to really cause many issues. However, it is definitely enough bang to throw the other 7ish ounces of carefully engineered steel razor shards wrapped around it in every direction at "get-fucked" speeds.

Some grenades are covered in little bbs, so it's more like a 360 shotgun blast.

I actually kind of wonder why shrapnel grenades haven't been outlawed by the Geneva convention, in lieu of concussion and flashbangs. They still have the ultimate function of clearing out areas, but aren't designed to maim.

The Hague convention dictated weapon usage. Geneva was more specific to treatment of non-combatants, ie; POWs.and civilians.

They weren't really brought up at the Hague conventions (1899/1907) because they weren't really widely developed and used then.

The Convention on certain Conventional Weapons (1980) talked about them....

They decided that fragmentation left from grenades needs to be detectable by X-ray, but otherwise leaves them alone.

The general argument was they possess a variety of both offensive and defensive purposes specific to them, and that no other munition can replace those purposes/advantages while causing less suffering. It's still war.

Yeah. Not enough to be safe. At the grenade throwing range the bunker behind it had a small armored window to watch the range. About 90 feet away. The window still had some nasty scratches from shrapnel in it. Probably won't kill you, but nevertheless could get you wounded.

Most places require a license to make, set off, and/or sell fireworks. It can be dangerous, but is actually very easy and safe when done responsibly! Remember that fireworks have been around for over a thousand years, it’s pretty simple
