Itinerary/Διαδρομές Rental Car Recommendations at Heraklion Airport

I wanted to ask if there were any good recommendations for a rental car in November. ChatGPT is recommending AutoRentalsCrete which includes a free child seat. Curious what this sub thinks/recommends.

Thanks in advance!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Single Day Car Rentals

Wondering if anyone can recommend places that offer single day car rentals? Going to be in Crete (Chania/Herkalion) in a couple of weeks and would like to rent a car for 1 day (something like 10am -7pm) in each respective city to able to sight see. Online many companies appear to require 3 day rentals minimum. Is it worth emailing? Does anyone have recommendations?

Hello! Is anybody going tomorrow (sept. 9) to Elafonisi or coming home today later?

I left my bag (a nylon bag) at one of the shops, i had adidas slippers, my bikini, my mother’s bikini and a pink towel in it. If anybody can ask and maybe bring it back to Chania i would be really grateful. I don’t really know the exact location of the shop, our driver stopped there but i can attach some pictures of it. It was kind of under the parking lot on the left side of the road if you watch it like this. Also i attached a pic from tiktok i think it was that market, its kinda modern it also had a rest room and cafe everything.

If anybody can go there and ask for it and maybe bring it back i would be more Than grateful 😭 thanks a lot

Culture/Πολιτισμός Blind visitors and Greek culture

Hi,

my partner and I are both totally blind and planning a holiday in Crete. We would be staying in Heraklion and would like to explore a lot of the island. We've found many attractive destinations, tours and sights we'd like to visit. Now, however, I'm a bit insecure and intimidated by what I've read about people's attitudes toward disabled people in Greece.

We're independent people but obviously we'd still need some help in an unfamiliar area. We're used to people being willing to help (give directions, lending a quick hand) and taking us seriously. Would we experience the same in Heraklion do you think? Also, as I mentioned, we've already found some great private tours we'd like to book. Now, after reading too much on Reddit, I'm scared to mention our blindness to the tour operators, I'm afraid they won't offer us any tours out of concern or ignorance.

Can you tell me something encouraging? What are people in Heraklion/Crete like when it comes to disabilities?

Thanks for any input. :)

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Crete: daytrip from Rethymnon to Chania, looking for advice

Hello,

we are traveling to Crete next week and are staying in Rethymnon. We would like to visit Chania for a day but are not sure about the best way to get there:

- With a touroperator; pick-up from the hotel but more expensive and we would be limited to their departure schedule; usually you're already back in Rethymnon bij 17:30 so you can't stay for dinner in Chania. Is Chania a city where you can spend all day? Or is it ok to be back by 17:30?

- By public transport; we read that there are hourly busses from Rethymnon to Chania. They're a lot cheaper and also fast. But do we have to book them in advance? Are they usually crowded in September (would be a shame if the bus is full and we have to wait another hour to travel)? Are they reliable?

- By taxi. More expensive but more guaranteed maybe? Or do you also have to book them in advance? And there are 6 of us so probably more expensive.

We would not like to hire a car ourselves.

Or maybe there are even more options that we don't know about yet. Any advice is welcome :) Thanks in advance!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Driving at 3am from Agios Nikolaos to Heraklion Airport? Is it too dangerous

Hello. As the post title says, I (single female) will have to drive my rental car from my hotel to the Heraklion airport to catch my 6am flight. I am a very experienced driver (almost 30 years of driving in Istanbul). Googlemaps shows the distance is 60kms.

My question is: does that highway have very sharp curves? and are there a lot drunk driving as it is a touristic island? I am assuming that the highway will be pitch black at that time of the night?

Many thanks in advance for the answers.

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Help - best place to propose near Bali, Crete

Hi Crete!

I'm planning to propose to my girlfriend on this wonderful island at some point in the next few days.

I was hoping this group had some recommendations for a idyllic/romantic beach spot near Bali or somewhere along the northern shoreline as we will hire a car/moped?

Thank you so much in advance!

Nature/Φύση Cat / animal welfare in Crete

Hi everyone, I have gotten to know 5 very sweet kittens in Agia galini, that are, like many strays, in urgent need of care before tourism breaks in winter. Are there any animal welfare programs that could contact for help?

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Bus from Kissamos to Chania

I was researching bus times and wanting to purchase tickets in advance but I noticed on KTEL that you can find a time departing from Chania to Kissamos but no option from Kissamos back to Chania. Now I’m worried that there is no buses to get back from Balos Lagoon? I also encountered no results found for Heraklion to Chania which I need to do as well.

Is it because end of September is close to low season so not as many buses? Or the site is just not accurate or well updated?

Culture/Πολιτισμός Traditional dancing in Heraklion

Family is stopping in Heraklion for 3 days (Sep 6-9) and wondering if there is anywhere to watch traditional Cretan dancing.

Tried searching the thread and either the search is limited or I am under the influence of too much sun and saltwater.

Thank you!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές diving pier/boardwalk at a beach

Hello! In the beginning stages of planning a special trip for my daughter. This is a super weird request. While she loves swimming, she really doesn't like the whole sand part about a beach. One of her favorite beaches we ever went to had a swimming pier where she could climb in and out of the ocean on a ladder. Are there any beaches with this in Crete? We are still in beginning planning stages, so not tied to one area or anything like that. Thank you very much!

Culture/Πολιτισμός Hiking Poles rental in Chania or Samaria Gorge

As the title says. Looking to rent hiking poles for the day. Seems a waste to buy. Are there businesses that rent hiking poles? Thinking of using one of the many tour companies. Do you recommend tour companines, and if so do they provide or rent hiking poles?

Itinerary/Διαδρομές KTEL Bus from Skaleta to Rethymno

Hi everyone,

I’ll be staying in Skaleta (near Rethymno) and I’d like to take the bus to Rethymno. I checked the KTEL Rethymno website but I can’t seem to get any results when searching for this route.

Does anyone know if there is actually a Skaleta → Rethymno connection, and how to check the timetable on their site?

Thanks in advance!

Music/Μουσική Where can I listen/ dance to local music?

I (27F) am staying near Chania (Agia Marina) and would love to go to bar where plays local music, even better if people are also dancing (and even better if it’s mainly frequented by locals).

I love to get to know different cultures through music and dance.

Culture/Πολιτισμός Solo traveling in Chania without a car: what should I do? Are those self-driving boats safe?

1- I’d love to do a boat trip, and was considering to rent one of these self-driving small boats that don’t require license. I don’t have previous experience in driving boats — would you consider it safe for me to try it out? Is it easy to drive one or those? I know that the boat company would explain how it works and have an itinerary for me, but I would be by myself.

I also considered doing group boat trips, but couldn’t find any.

2- I would like to get recommendations of beaches I can go without a car (maybe bus, taxi (?)), or if there’s somewhere other solo travelers organize car rides.

3- I would also love to go to a winery.
